I wouldn't loop cotton thread back through itself as its too weak - but you can do a simple tie so it holds firm to the needle the same way. It does indeed change everything

Well, this one's probably not even used on horses, ;). But having ridden horses myself, I can say that you're not even supposed to hit the horse. You usually hit the saddle and they hear the sound and feel the vibration. It's like yanking on the reins. You just don't do it. It's unnecessary force. Either the horse is trained or it's not. If it is, just lightly nudging the rein with your pinky will get it to turn. Loosening the reins, tapping the saddle with the crop and lightly kicking your stirrups tells it to go max speed.
