Perfect timing! I just watched your Mame video. I'm pulling the trigger on BigBox, and will be building 3 separate themed (wall mount) cabinets running ryzen mini pc's. You earned a sub!

The launch box installer won't open on the hard drive. It saying "windows cannot access the specific device , path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". I opened it as an administrator, but nothing changes. Does anyone know how to resolve this ?

What size USB stick would you recommend, obviously one big enough for the entire folder, but is having one much larger worth getting, would it improve anything? Having not set up Launch Box yet, working on building a new pc specifically for it, what size is the entire folder on a drive, I'm sure it depends on how many different systems and ROM's, but do you have an estimated average size? Thanks for these videos, really helping me get ready for when I finally have everything built and ready to go for installing Launch Box.

Hi. My setup has a full, fairly recent, Mame setup without the CHD files (these are hard disk etc images used by some newer games) plus full sets of games for NES, N64, SNES plus some GameCube, PS2, etc. Once all the images for box art and all are downloaded it comes in at around 200GB. There are a whole load of games that I've not installed, plus if you want nice preview videos for the collection you'd need to factor that in. My guide would be a 256GB stick for arcade and 8bit / 16bit fans. If you want loads of PS2, GameCube and later games you'll need a GB per game so really as big as you want. I hope this helps

@@BytesNBits Thanks for info. I'm mostly looking maybe up to N64 era, I also don't need every game for every system, so i THINK A 1.5TB drive will do. I can always upgrade it later if I start running out of room.

quick question. What format does the USB stick need to be fat32 or standard
@BytesNBits

Launchbox will only work on a Windows PC so you can use either FAT32 or NTFS - basically as long as it's Windows compatible.

how does this portable launch box handle the controllers on the various computers when you attach them? for example computer 1 has a usb snes type controller and com 2 has a ps3 controller connected via bluetooth
@BytesNBits
@BytesNBits 2 года назад
Launchbox seems to scan for what's attached. The emulators do try to do the same but you might need to go into the control mappings if you use very different controllers. I've tried it with a couple of different computer / controller setups and it's been pretty good so far.
@DjSideways
@DjSideways Год назад
What controller do i use?
@BytesNBits
@BytesNBits Год назад
Most controllers should work fine. I use an XBox controller and an arcade stick. Both just plug in and play. For some arcade games you might need to remap the keys.
@lucykaede5863

Stupid question but since LaunchBox is also available on Android, wouldn't it be possible to plug and play not only on PC but tablets/smartphones with OTG compatibility too?
@BytesNBits
@BytesNBits Год назад
the windows app is not compatible with Android. You could use the USB stick to transfer the game files, but you'd need the Android version of Launchbox.

@@BytesNBits Alright so if I wanted a portable PC to play with, then I'll just get a laptop or Tablet PC then. Thank you for answering my question!
@BytesNBits
@BytesNBits Год назад
@@lucykaede5863 Yes. I portable Windows device will work well. Or any Android phone or tablet. The Android app is free to use for up to 100 games, or about $40 for a lifetime licence. I'll be making a video in the next month or so about turning an old android phone into a retro gaming device. Again the power of the device will limit the range of consoles etc. you can emulate.
@lucykaede5863
@lucykaede5863 Год назад
@@BytesNBits Yea I want a portable emulation device but the USB Batocera/Lunchbox option restricts me to PCs only whereas a phone would be too small of a screen/big ugly black side bars. Perfect would be an android tablet/PC tablet. The more recent with better specs the more expensive which is tricky because I want to emulate PS2 flawlessly and maybe even PS3 for a handful of games. Looking forward to that video!

Could i do this on a micro sd to use in a handheld?
@BytesNBits
@BytesNBits Год назад
Launchbox only works in Windows. If it's a Windows device then yes. Otherwise no. There is an Android version that lets you export your library from the desktop onto it, but it installs as a separate app.
@boogz3602
@boogz3602 Год назад
@Bytes N Bits so if I let's say pre Configured all of this on a 1tb micro sd and put this in say the rog ally it will just work? Or am I going to have to format the sd card and lose everything? Still kinda new to all of this so I appreciate the help
@bob-grant
@bob-grant Год назад
@@boogz3602 If it's a Windows machine like the Rog Ally then it should work. It really depends on how much of Windows you get access to and how the internal setup of the machine is configured for controllers, etc. I assume it's basically a windows laptop in a gaming case.
@boogz3602
@boogz3602 Год назад
@Bob Grant yea I'm not entirely sure yet. My concern is taking the time to configure everything and then losing it cause I have to format the SD card. I also assume I'd still need to run the portable version. Emudeck made everything so simple on the steam deck lol
@g.abzilla7665
@g.abzilla7665 Год назад
So the downside to this method is that you'll need to have a big internal HDD space to put all the games/emulators into the Launchbox folder before putting it on an external HDD. I have a mini gaming PC with only 500 GB of space, and initially, I wanted to use this method and slowly build my games collection to put into a 2TB external HDD. Am I missing anything here?
@BytesNBits
@BytesNBits Год назад
You can install Launchbox directly onto the external drive, skipping the need to put it on your internal drive. Just build up your collection on the external drive and move it from PC to PC.
