Maui's fish hook build, made from Styrofoam insulation.
Tools and materials list:
pencil, sharpie, craft paper, scissors, band saw (could use knife or hand saw), box cutter/knife, belt sander, 80 grit sandpaper, 400 grit sandpaper, wood burner (use a mask for protection from toxic fumes), Gorilla Glue wood glue, paintbrush, acrylic paints: white, tan, and brown, spray polyurethane, paper towels, hot glue gun and hot glue, craft twine(cheap at the dollar store)
overall it is pretty sturdy, the wood glue really helps and if there were multiple layers it would probably be even stronger, it also helps protect the Styrofoam from being eaten by the spray polyurethane, it is still handing on my daughter's wall and we will get it down and play with it every once in a while.
Other channels that I like to watch myself that I would definitely recommend watching are the following:
Bob Clagett from I like to make stuff!
/ iliketomakestuffcom
Punished Props do an amazing job! / punishedprops
Evil Ted Smith is also very awesome!
/ evilted40
Andrew DFT also really awesome with foam gun builds especially!

As in islander covered in Polynesian tattoos all my nieces and nephews call me Uncle Maui. I'm going to surprise them this Halloween and do the full costume (really just a leaf skirt, wig and necklace - the rest is real lol). Your video was super helpful and easy to follow. Can't thank you enough for posting!!

Awesome video.. I want to be Maui for holloween. I think this is a great start for what I want to do.. I'm going to sandwich three prices if the foam and have the middle one hollow so I can put light in it

What kind of housing styrofoam is are you using? I picked some up from Lowes... but it keep crumbling... not as dense as yours...

Saw the wood burner and I was like omg no the chemicals! But If you're wearing a mask, That shouldn't be an issue. Id go as far as to do it outside and with a mask.

How does it hold up when being swung around etc? I need a hook for a theatre performance and want to know it could stand being thrown around. Thanks in advance :)
@project_idea
@project_idea 2 года назад
It being for a theater performance, I would probably use a different kind of foam... Such as EVA foam... It would definitely be stronger. We still have this hook but it mostly hangs on the wall. The foam I used for this can break... It does make it a little more durable if it is coated with several layers of glue though.

I love this idea! What do you recommend if you dont have a wood burner to do the sketches
@project_idea
@project_idea 6 лет назад
Jocelyn Florendo The woodburner is the easiest way I have found. I tried to use a rotary tool but the lines were not smooth enough. An exacto might would work but would take a long time. wood burners are like $10 but do not breath in the fumes.

I bought one at Michael's for less than $10 with a 50% coupon. They have very frequent coupons (usually 40% off though). I would suggest getting the "detailer". It is lower temp and has a finer point. Good luck!

You can get it at Walmart or Lowe's... But you can also use pretty much any clear coat as well.

Where did you purchase this foam at? Love the video! I'm trying to find a foam that won't fall apart. I found a foam insulation thats 2 inches thick x 4 ft x 8 ft at HomeDepot. Would that work?
@project_idea
@project_idea 3 года назад
That should be good. You may have to glue it together to make it thicker than the 2 inches. Ive had to do that for some projects before and wood glue or school glue works great. Just give it plenty of time to dry.
@michaelandelise1223

Thank you! Do you remember where you got your foam at and what the measurements were?
@project_idea

Honestly the piece I used was a scrap piece that I had. It is the kind used for houses and such though. High density foam.
@johnyarzagaray6873
@johnyarzagaray6873 6 лет назад
Looks awesome! How big is it? Looks to be about 2 feet long. Do you think making it longer would require using thicker foam for strength? I was thinking of making one about 4 feet long.
@project_idea
@project_idea 6 лет назад
The one I made is right at 32 inches long. I would recommend putting some type of support right above the handle or thicker foam... maybe both if you go any larger. I have a more recent video where I made a Thor Ragnarok inspired sword that was 4 feet long and in the video it did break, so I had to use a dowel rod to put it back together. Thankfully it was for display purposes only.
@johnyarzagaray6873
@johnyarzagaray6873 6 лет назад
Project Idea Thanks! Can you use the gorilla wood glue to glue 2 pieces of 1 1/2" pink foam together to make a 3" piece? That would make it less likely to break above the handle. I suppose I could sandwich a piece of wood or metal rod in between the sheets for extra reinforcement. Also, how important is the spray polyurethane? Thoughts? Thanks again for your insight and expertise. Much appreciated.
@project_idea
@project_idea 6 лет назад
+John Yarzagaray You can use the wood glue to glue the styrofoam together, it can get messy though. the polyurethane allows you to do the darker wash over the whole piece at the end without messing up the acrylic paint already on the piece. I would not skip it.
@johnyarzagaray6873
@johnyarzagaray6873 6 лет назад
Project Idea I should start paying you. Thanks so much. This has been immensely helpful. But I have yet another question (sorry!). Which spray polyurethane did you use? Some are water based while others are oil based. Satin? Gloss? Also, do you have any suggestions on what glue to use to glue 2 pieces of foam board together? Liquid nails? Another RU-vidr said glidden gripper primer works great. Thoughts? Thanks again!
@project_idea
@project_idea 6 лет назад
+John Yarzagaray ive never used glidden gripper primer..so not sure about that. i have used wood glue and it worked(used it on the candlestick in lifesized clue part 2) liquide nails probably would work good too. I don't remember exactly what polyurethane spray I used but any clear coat enamel will work really well too.
@TheTravesty2012
@TheTravesty2012 Год назад
what is the polyurethane for, if it eats away at the styrofoam??
@project_idea
@project_idea Год назад
The acrylic paint I used to paint it first protects it from the spray eating the styrofoam but it was also a matte finish and I wanted it to be more of a gloss finish to it. Once it has the clear coat it helps protect the finish from being damaged as easy too.

Awesome!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽❤❤❤ Question. Can I use paper mache instead of gorilla glue?
@project_idea
@project_idea 3 года назад
You could probably use mod podge or something. It does not need to be gorilla glue. Thats just what I had. Any kind of school glue would work good too. You have to make sure it is coated good though cause if you use any spray paint on it and it comes into contact with the Styrofoam it can eat it away.
