Don’t let a guard goose scare you! They’re a definite money maker 💰

Goose is definitely not cheap to buy and if you develop your lines and start with quality stock they actually grow out quite fast, ours thrive on pasture once they’re off heat

How do you market them? Do you just list them in your local craigslist? Or are there more options?

We use kijiji here in Canada which is basically our Craigslist, Facebook is also a great resource though, find local poultry groups (we find these the best) just be sure to follow their posting rules and have a farm page, post regularly about your farm and stock and as you grow a website is a huge help if you’re willing to ship. Also attending local poultry shows and sales, any word of mouth you can get is HUGE, just work hard to make sure it stays positive. The poultry world is huge and there’s far more demand for quality stock than people realize

So, which makes the most profit, selling eggs, goslings, or butchered geese?

There are a lot of variables to what makes each more or less profitable. Butchered geese can be extremely profitable if feed is affordable in your area and there is a demand, also comes down to whether you’re in an area that you can process on farm legally for resale or have an affordable processor in your area that will take geese as many won’t, so overall costs to get a goose table ready can vary widely which can limit the profitability. Eggs sell for less than goslings however are still extremely profitable as there aren’t a whole lot of other factors to consider, we find that we sell out of hatching eggs as soon as we have them with no other added costs such as electricity, incubator space or maintenance, poor hatch rates, potential malfunctions, etc. Goslings bring more money than hatching eggs however it is rare to have a 100% hatch rate so there is some loss there, any feed until goslings are picked up, running the incubator and brooder all add to expenses that can vary greatly depending on your location or setup. We don’t have any issue selling goslings so they don’t typically sit around very long and if they do mature geese sell easily and profitably for us as we are able to keep our feed costs low however due to high predatory loads we do lose some over the summer unfortunately. All in all I personally find that in most cases hatching eggs are the easiest way to be profitable with geese but it really is something that varies depending on independent circumstances and requires you to run your own numbers to see which would be most profitable for your own circumstances. I’m sorry there isn’t a clear cut answer for you, we personally find selling both hatching eggs and goslings to be best for us

I’m looking into getting geese or ducks to sell for meat or the birds themselves. I’m hoping to get some soon. Is there any advice you have for breeding. Would it be more profitable to sell geese that I raise to adults? I’m also in a colder climate in the USA so I’m hoping to get more cold tolerant yet large geese.

We’ve had no problem with our buff, Embden or Chinese gees and we live in Alberta Canada, they’ve seen temps of -40 with no issue. Goose and duck can both be very profitable meat birds, look into the USDA poultry processing exemptions and regulations in your state to see what options you have to process and sell directly. We also make good money selling goose hatching eggs and goslings and can never seem to have enough, we sell our hatching eggs for $8 each and goslings for $20 and increase the price as they age and come off heat. We feed our geese and ducks a variety of produce (you can see it in our videos about LOOP) and have no issues, they do wonderfully. Best of luck, geese and ducks can be noisy and messy but are a wonderful addition to a homestead business

@@thefrugalfarmstead Thanks, I have a damn good deal for a embden and embden Toulouse mix goose pair with 3 of their goslings so I’ll be starting to work on the coop this weekend. What style coop do you use?
@thefrugalfarmstead

We have a little video on a cheap simple coop we made out of an old moving crate, the main thing is to keep them dry and draft free in the winter. With some o feed our extreme temps here through the winter we make sure they have constant access to fresh snow and offer water when temps allow and have had no issues. We free range outside of breeding season and have never lost a goose to coyotes, not saying it can’t happen but we’ve never had an issue and have a huge number of coyotes passing through our property nightly. If you’ve got a good deal on the Embden jump on it, they’re easy keepers and excellent meat birds. Ours do amazing free ranging and supplemented with a variety of produce which really helps cut costs and increase profits, it also helps boost profitability because of being able to free range and forage so end products do fetch a premium. Best of luck!!!
