Propagate Plants like a Pro (First video): • Propagate Plants Like ...
If you're looking for a way to make a little side income then consider making money with plants in your backyard by rooting cuttings and selling them. Start a little backyard nursery with very little investment.
We've finally come full circle with the English Laurel cuttings. It's been a year since we set up the propagation frame and taken the cuttings and they've grown into beautiful saleable plants.

That's pretty darn amazing. I am wanting to start cuttings from my huge Honeysuckle. It got so big it dragged the trellis the previous owner of the property have grown it on right off the side of the Workshop. You have inspired me. I got a huge pile of chipped branches a couple years ago from a tree service who chopped down a huge Alder Tree for me. It has shrunk by half now so thinking it is now perfect to use for a starter mix. I used the top for mulch in my back garden paths and the lower I go the finer it seems to be. I credit the use of that to you ... must have been in my future to use it as such. Thanks for sharing so much in your videos. Hope you keep them coming ... : )

You should check out Pineapple Guava. It makes a beautiful hedge with silvery fuzz on the underside of the leaves, delightful edible flowers and with more than one plant you get yummy fruit that taste like the flower and falls to the ground when ripe. I know it will grow well for you, I have had it in my yard for 8 years and if I was not pruning it, it would be 10-12 feet tall. It does fine in clay soil too even though it is not it's preference.

Mike - Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Im also in Pierce county and would love to know what landscaping companies you purchase from. I need to move a few rhoadies and learning how to cut and propagate is making my lady happy that we get to keep them :)

Very cool! If you go plant show us what they look like. Then you could show us in another year! Amazing results. Just a quick question. How do you keep them nice and viable until you can get them in the soil at home? I took some forcinthia cuttings and by the time I got home a few hours later it was a no go too droopy and dried up.

Place in a plastic bag and spray with water, then tie the bag closed until you get home. If I'm going to be a few hours or longer, I take a cooler with me and a bag with a spray bottle.

Tomato cuttings (use the suckers) will root in about 2 weeks.

When you plant them for your hedge, you'll probably have them pretty close. Will you be digging individual holes or using a deep rototiller to make one or two strips?

We live in Washington State and I would be required to have a business license, and a horticulture license. To sell to nurseries. We have an abundance of baby Douglas fir and pine trees we’d like to pot up and sell. I’d also like to propagate many of our wild trees and shrubs like roses and elderberry, lilacs. And wildflowers. I pulled a few suckers of wild lilac and planted them on our new property. That are doing well and I’m seeing new growth.

I don't have any video of it full grown but if you use google images, there are tons of photos of these plants.

Mike, I've got a pile of finely shred walnut stump. It looks like it would make a good potting medium. What do you think?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 2 года назад
I'm not as familiar with walnut but it's the bark I use, not the wood from the tree. The shredded wood from many trees will start to attract fungus and break down, creating an unfriendly environment for cuttings. The bark doesn't break down as fast and is relatively inert.

Do the English Laurel flower like the mountain laurel? Can you do a video of a lime light hydrangea tree/bush cutting, rooting and update?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 4 года назад
2 different plants that don't flower the same. The English Laurel get small white flowers but they aren't very showy.

Thanks so much for all your videos. They are fantastic. I noticed that there was no mention of any fertiliser being used until the plants were being potted up. Surely if I'm using sand as my medium (I have no fir bark here) then I'd have to mix in some fertiliser or organic matter of some sort while the cuttings root?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 3 года назад
No, you actually don't want any fertilizer until after they are fully rooted. The cuttings have all the energy they need to produce roots. Fertilizer will add nutrients to the rooting medium, which will encourage molds, mildew, bacteria, and fungi and could contribute to rot.

Hey, Mike. Thanks for all the incredible content. I’ve made my way through most of your videos and am subscribed with my alerts on. I purchased your videos on building the frame and was hoping to ask you two questions: 1. I inherited a high tunnel that I am going to put plastic on and have use of for plant propagation. Will this space constitute “indirect sunlight,” as you say is required for the propagation frame? 2. I got a quote for the glass piece to go over the top and am going to take the dive, however it is quite expensive at $240. I expect it to last forever, especially if this frame is in the high tunnel. Do you think I should try to build it out with another type of cover? 3. Thank you again.
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 4 года назад
I have white plastic on mine that provides 50% shade and sometimes even that warms up the frame too much. The most ideal location is on the north side of a building so that no direct sun hits the glass. I don't keep my frames in my hoop house just for this reason. I did that propagation project with the english laurel in my hoop house but had to quickly block the sun with a 4x4 sheet of plywood. Hope that helps and let me know if you have more questions.

I really don't do much for insects. The only thing I do is treat for ants around the outside if I see them. Some years it's not a problem.

We have an orchard of about 40 apple and 40 peach trees... just now starting to think about selling cuttings from the root balls. Do they need to stay in a greenhouse over the winter?
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 Год назад
If the parent plant is cold hardy to your area, the rooted cuttings are just as strong.

Hi Mike, I love your channel! Something is biting my coneflower stems off at the bottom and leaving them lying there. Why??? At least eat the darn thing!!! Can I propagate them from these stems? If so how? They are also doing this to my hostas and just leaving the leafs lying there as well. Thanks, Cindi
@MikeKincaid79
@MikeKincaid79 4 года назад
Hard to say what's causing that but you've obviously got a pest somewhere in there. I like to use organic means to start with but it's getting late in the season now. I would plan to release some natural predators in the garden next spring like praying mantis and ladybugs.
