I try to give a clear and true explantion of how I make money woodworking!
I'm guessing my area is not just rare, and that people are willing to buy farmhouse tables in my area. The area I live is below the state average in household income for the state of Virginia.
I dont have a long term reputation as a woodworker. Ive only been selling my work for about 8-10 months.
Just to clarify im suggesting you start out selling Farmhouse tables and benches. They seem to be easyish to make and dont cost a ton in materials. i have built other stuff and ending up almost breaking even with the cost of materials and time.
Also I said in the video to make a Farmhouse table for yourself and list it for sale. What I meant is to make a farmhouse table to have a picture of your work as a show piece. I would keep a table for yourself and use your table as an example!!!
I hope this helps!!!
Thank

After 45 years of being in the business I enjoyed your excitement for what you are doing. We all have to start somewhere!

The first half of the ru-vid.comUgkx3ICSK6nSknaL_45CU2NmFSoXjarGMDiJ book is everything about wood: types, tools, finishes, setting up shop etc. The second half is all about doing projects for inside and outside of the home. The color pictures are helpful. After reading a dozen of these types of books, this is probably the best overall (layout, color photos, plans). Only detraction is that many of the projects use a table saw/router/planer, which are usually expensive and take up space, so the plans are less friendly to newcomers and the budget conscious. But I know I can use a drill, circular saw or a jigsaw to make the projects.

It’s a good strategy and I’m glad it’s working for you. I’ve been making some things out of lumberyard 2x lumber and it is such poor quality I have been buying 2x6’s to get 3 1/4” straight edge boards; that’s after rummaging through the entire stack of wood to get a half dozen boards. untreated is a little better after you get to 2x6 or 2x8 but 2x4s are junk. I make a lot of outdoor pieces and use a LOT of TTD- it is the worst quality of anything in a lumberyard, any lumberyard. It’s a huge issue for me. 80% of a bunk of ttd 2x6’s are junk, propellers. I didn’t notice one of the 2x6’s I bought last batch had bark residue on both side of the board. Also, the ttd dulls my blades and knocks more carbide teeth out of my saws than anything else I do. If you don’t figure in those costs- you can be upside down on your production right out of the gate. Best of luck. Thanks for posting.

Do you have any plans and instructions for your tables?
@dcl1952
@dcl1952 6 лет назад
How long do you let your wood dry before building your table. From pass experience , working with wood that has a higher then 7% moisture content creates real issues later because the wood is not stable yet. I build glider loveseat out of construction grade cedar but I will leave it sit in my shop for a minimum of 6 months before I'll even touch it. After that waiting period I'll check moisture content and if it's around 7%, I'll start using it.
@woodscrew5612
@woodscrew5612 6 лет назад
Denis Lance I certainly don't let it sit for 6 months. It just varies depending on what the moisture content is for me. I don't require it to be at 7% though. The table top will move as one unit once it's made into a top by edge gluing. I don allow the table top to move on the base though. Thanks for watching!

Your tables look great. Do you have to 'season' the lumber from the big box stores so it doesn't warp or twist and ruin a table? If so, for how long?
@woodscrew5612

John McGuire yes indeed I just sprinkle a little Montreal steak seasoning on them and they come out great!! Jk yeah it's good for them to sit and acclimate for awhile. I don't want to come off as a jerk but I probably will. When people in my area put out "Hardware store junk wood" tables using pocket hole screws on facebook they are not selling quality. This wood will twist and crack eventually. This is a not about craftsmanship its about just selling something for quick turn around. This will eventually get around town that you built junk. So if are trying to build for a career do not go this route. Use quality wood with less than 8% moisture content. Sell quality at a fair price. You can built farmhouse tables just research how wood moves and build with quality wood. And do not use pocket hole screws for joinery. It will come loose and people will tell other people about how you sell crap. The best means of advertising is word of mouth with quality work. Stick to using mortise and tenon joinery and attaching top with wood movement in mind and you will eventually be busier than can handle. This equals more money for less work and people will talk about you and your products.
@woodscrew5612
@woodscrew5612 6 лет назад
Daniel Ball it sounds like you have had success building that way. Personally the method I use works great! If you watched the whole video, I did mention that I use hardwoods as well I showed a pile of oak I had. Many people use pine or fur for the base. Check out the homestead craftsman among many others. Also I only ever built one table top and base using pocket hole joinery. I use dowels now. Also I don't do the breadboard ends that way anymore. As far as hardware store wood is concerned, once the table top is edge joined together with glue and dowels it moves as one unit. Whether you use pine or any hardwood, the wood will always move. I do the tops the correct way and attach the table top to the base the correct way now to allow for the top to move. If your wood is twisting or cracking after you made a table top then you may have done something wrong. Mortise and tenon is great, but it is not the only form of joinery that makes successful furniture. I'm not sure what area you are in, but my tables are extremely successful here and do not crack. I think you may be referring to putting breadboards on the top that may make your pieces crack if done with pocket holes and glue since it would not allow expansion and contraction of the wood to take place. Thanks for watching.

Wood & Screw Thrones Too Never said pine was not a good choice. big box store construction lumber was not intended tables. I have used beatle kill pine from coloraldo but it came kiln dried to 8% or less. The box stores can vary from 11% or higher. When they finally dry out it warps and if not joined properly it can twist. I believe its ok to show how to diy a table but to sell them would eventually end badly. My comments are only aimed at using constuction pine. At least get it from a mill and check moisture. If its cheap wood from the store there is a reason for that. Cheap wood equals cheap results. im only trying to educate as you are. I hope all is well.

Daniel Ball I get where your coming from. Some people that watch my videos or that purchase tables can or want to only pay a certain price for a table. I am able to accommodate them within reason by using store bought kiln dried southern yellow pine. If you are worried about that type of lumber, just don't use it. I however do use it after allowing it to acclimate inside my basement and using my moisture meter to check moisture content. The pine trees used by stores are no different than the trees used by lumber suppliers. They are cut differently and may not be the best quality pieces. I would suggest if you ever choose to use it, you take your time to look through the stock, allow it to acclimate to where you are, joint it properly, and you should have no issues. Check out jay bates channel he made some nice stuff with store bought southern yellow pine as well as many many other people. Thanks again.

Is it cheaper to buy rough lumber? I'd think that the labor and equipment involved in cleaning up rough lumber wouldn't offset the cost. I honestly don't know. But I'm genuinely interested knowing how to do things properly. Thanks.

@@robbrown39 its much cheaper because you need that equipment to do woodwork anyways. buying s2s lumber doesnt mean you dont need to buy a jointer and planer

When you say "ad", are you doing paid ads on Facebook, or are you just posting in the groups? Also, do you have luck posting on Craigslist?
@woodscrew5612
@woodscrew5612 6 лет назад
Troy Yarbrough hey Troy. No I've never paid for an ad anywhere. I just post on groups, but it seems that most people just look at fb marketplace now which is great! I can see how many views my table is getting and it broadens my ad. I have had some luck on craigslist but FB allows people to see who you are so they might feel more confident that's it's not some sort of scam!! I hope this helps!

Your video was well prepared and presented with one exception, you repeated your facts too many times. This was just in the first 15:45. other than that the video was great. By the way I did subscribe. God Bless my friend.
