Do you have pastel shards, dust, and crumbs littering your pastel trays? Today I will show you how to turn them into brand new beautiful fancy hand-rolled pastels! It's a great way to unusable scraps into awesome supplies. You can also take colors you don't like (or have too much of) and mix them with other colors to make more shades that are more useful to you. Let's get started!
You will need (Affiliate links used)
A craft dedicated Mortar and pestle: amzn.to/3UqTFhf or something to crush the pastels with, honestly, a rock and bowl will probably work.
Pastel scraps/dust or colors you don't like and want to mix into colors you want
A palette knife: amzn.to/3hyTNg5
Gum Arabic (optional) amzn.to/3A3E3Ih or shrsl.com/3sebm *Gum arabic is a binder. If you are recycling pastel scraps there will be a binder in there already which will reactivate when you add water. If you like the consistency of the pastels you are using you don't need to add gum arabic but if the pastels you are recycling are too soft and crumbly adding a couple of drops of gum arabic will make them hold together better and be less dusty. The more GA you add the harder your pastel will be.
Waxed paper
Glass or silicone mat: amzn.to/3DRCIW2

For those of us with arthritis, a small coffee grinder works great! By the way “color friend to color friend on the color wheel!” You aren’t just a great artist and teacher, you are also entertaining. An actual “renaissance woman!”

Buy some white pastel,powder, and black to make different tints tones and shades too. Use enough of the powder to go up or down in value as needed.

my set of fabercastell pastels broke in so many bits I stuffed them in one of those oversized old plastic cigarette holders in order not to lose them never thought of mixing them hahaha. Still have the binder, should test that out.

Oh, wow, that's good to know. When we pay good money for our art supplies, (and some are so painfully expensive,) it's satisfying to remake the "waste" into something reusable 👍

Great tutorial! Looks like you got some nice results! If you find that handmade pastels warp or crack while drying, try gradually drying them in damp sawdust. Use damp, medium, and dry sawdust in 3 containers, and transfer the sticks gradually as they dry. One other tip: to help pastel dust wet more quickly and to reduce airborne dust, use denatured alcohol as a wetting agent. That works well with dry pigments in general, especially ones that repel water.

Neat. But could you use a plastic bag to crush the bits up using a rolling pin? It might save loss of pigment from it being stuck inside the mortar. Then you could keep the powder in the bag.

Fabulous tip! Reminds me of Schmincke's yearly "random grey" colour, both as watercolour and oil tube, collecting their excess pastel left overs. Every year is different, as they have different amount of colours left over. Will definitely give this a try!

Hullo Lindsay, I did something very similar to this without the gum Arabic when I was breaking my Schmincke pastels and have one of them turned to dust in my hands, I was very discouraged and then I watched someone make their own from scratch like this and I simply got a piece of glass crushed the remaining dust and “larger” pieces and made the stick pieces back into two smaller ones! I am glad that you are just amazingly frugal and willing to share your thoughts and ideas with us! Oh! I almost threw those pieces in the trash, but I did just pay so much for those sticks that I had a couple that did not break well and ended up in baby food jars! Thank you!

@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter Год назад
I don't have the dry pigments for that on hand, or the dry clay. There are tutorials online tho but it will be more expensive than buying pastels from a reputable manufacturer. This is easy and saves me money whereas the other is harder to get right and more expensive. This is foolproof 😆

Would using the silicone ice cube trays that make long ice cubes for water bottles be a good way to shape these?
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter Год назад
I think if you have horizontal ones that have an opening along the long edge it will work but if they are tall ones with the opening at the top they would break and also hard to fill. Rolling them is so satisfying tho!

Gum arabic
@unboundbytiffany

Question if you happen to see this and have a second, if gum arabic makes this harder/less soft, is there a way to soften it instead but keep it binded? Been struggling to figure out how to do so, especially to use other mediums with the pastel dust etc. Hmmm thank you in advance
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter Год назад
Try not adding any. You could add China clay to help bind it and keep it soft.

Could you put this in a container (like a Pringle’s lid) and use as a “pan” pastel?
@thefrugalcrafter

You could but it won't be as soft as pan pastel because pastel sticks contain more binder so they don't crumble.

Please wear a mask and gloves when you do this. Do not reuse the mask. Wipe down all surfaces with wet paper towels to remove pigment dust. (There will be dust even if you can’t see it.) Pigments vary in toxicity and may be more toxic when combined. They are absorbed through the skin and invisible particles are breathed into the lungs to end up in the bloodstream. Please be safe. ( I’m a retired analytical chemist who specialized in nano gram (ridiculously small) levels of contamination in computer parts.) Oh and don’t let pastels or any powdered art supply anywhere near the kitchen or anything used around food. 😊
