Built from necessity from years of experience. Literally, the BEST way to carry your lighter and prep it for an extreme event. Chapstick, duct tape, a lighter, cotton ball, and vaseline to create the BEST go to fire lighting tool. Never lose either chapstick or your lighter again. Use emergency tinder, waterproofed, in conjunction with flammable duct tape to get a fire going in every environment and in any condition. It was 30 degrees when I taped this video and you can see even in a cold environment it works!! Enjoy!!

Clip the ends from a Q-Tip and put them in the cap of the Chapstick. Roll them over the lip balm, and they will burn like a candle. Not nearly as messy, and easier to access. Three or four tips will fit in the cap.

Make these with melted Wax. dip those cotton balls in molten wax. That lights up awesome too. And its not as messy. I use to love Vaseline cotton balls, but Wax is so much better. Burns almost the same 5-12 minutes (depending on the size of the cotton ball, weather etc)

I use empty chapstick tubes as matchcases. Cut out the stem super glue the base back on. Holds 7 waterproof large strike anywhere matches a birthday candle and some have room for a dry cottonball under the lid which I tape shut. Nice to have,never got wet and has saved my ass twice. Plus it blends in with pocket junk

Good stuff... I have been using the cotton ball and vaseline for years. A couple of pointers on preparing and using the balls. It is best to use warmed, liquid, vaseline to fuse with the cotton balls. If that is not available simply rub the ball with vaseline in your hands until warm. When using the balls, take a small piece , each ball will make 6 to 8 fires, pull it apart till it is a fiber ball. This will burn for about 2 minutes and can be lite very easily with a flint and striker.

Being OCD I am surprised you didn't take the narrower strip of tape and rig a lanyard to your chap stick cap so you wouldn't lose it. I think I saw where someone mentioned using old 35 mm film containers for holding cotton ball tinder. I would be curious to know if over time the Vaseline didn't break down the plastic. If I find any of those containers I had years ago I will have to check it out. I have used old prescription pill bottles for that. I say again, you have some of the coolest videos on YT.

Not only would this kit be easy to assemble with times we ALL have on hand, but it seems to lend itself to a great deal of variation! For example, if you scale the lighter down to a Bic Mini, you probably *can* use the 1" Gorilla Tape. Clever paracord users can easily create a more complex and useful lanyard in between. The cord can easily be strung through the ring of a Swiss Army knife, the chain of a magnesium striker, or the lid of a match safe carrying the storm matches you've already shown us how to chop up (like an Exotac Matchcap XL). And of course, the advantages of dryer-lint cubes and other tinder have already been stated below.

I went through all 4 of my inner tube bands on my lighter. Finally got the dead pine needles to light. The woods were wet and snow covered. I learned NOT to blow on burning inner tube, like you would other material, to get the fire going. The tube just extinguishes! Just gently place it under the tinder and wait for it to go. I was just on a short hike in my own woods, so I was testing my only lighting method in my pocket. I stayed warm, and nearly fell asleep with a soft pine log as a pillow!

Pro gamer move: Make the paracord long enough to wear as a necklace, in sub freezing temperatures this will allow your body heat to keep the butane in your lighter from freezing.
@Crogon
@Crogon 3 года назад
Better off kepping it in your front pant pocket. WHile your head and feet are the warmest part of your body, your crotch is also designed to radiate heat. I'd be more concerned with the chapstick melting than the butane freezing. I think I would have left that tape a bit longer, to hold the cap on.

@@Crogon so right. As for me, my pocket is where I keep my windproof lighter, but I start most of my fires (non-emergency, but best way to maintain skills) the old-school way: one wooden match. I prefer the small ones; lots of fires; lightweight; cold temp doesn't matter and an extra box or two in separate ziplock bags is great for just in case a box gets wet. Oh and my daily go-to is to simply wrap my little match in a tootsie roll* wrapper (wax paper) which makes it better than a larger kitchen match. *Tootsie rolls are hard to beat.

I wouldn't keep an unprotected Bic lighter in my pocket. If the gas valve gets depressed....which they can in your pocket....then you can lose all of your fuel and never know it. I always keep it in some kind of tin. I know it's cliche....but a Bic fits inside of an Altoids tin like it's made to go in there....plus room to for chapstick and cotton balls or lint....and I duct tape it shut to keep it kind of weather proof. A little late to the show so this may have already been mentioned but, if you have used up your last bit of cotton ball, you can also use the "guts" of your length of 550 paracord as a tinder source. Additionally, you could also substitute the 550 for a similar length of jute or hemp twine for the same reason. When "fluffed up", they make fantastic tinder or bird's nest material. Your Ranger Lighter is a great project. Cheap, most items can be found around the house, no special tools required, about 5 minutes "work" and you've effectively doubled your chance of lighting a fire in less-than-ideal conditions than just using the lighter alone. 👍 Cheers and all the best from Nova Scotia 🇨🇦

Thanks for this way smart upgrade! I make small fringe like slits on the end of the tape so I can easily pull off narrow strips of tape tinder. I fill the chapstick container with Vaseline saturated cotton balls balls. I tie dental floss around the bottom cotton ball so it's easy to pull the cotton balls out.
