Finish carpenter here. Last one in to the build so cleanliness is very important. I have modified allot of my tools to improve dust collection. It seems allot of the time that all the mess don’t matter trades and tool makers just don’t put very much effort into this feature of their product. I’ve accepted this fact and do it myself. Now if I could just convince my customers that it’s okay to set up inside closer to my work and get the job done faster. I have on occasion been forced by customers to walk as far away as 100 feet to my saw for each cut. All that while being accosted for taking too long to finish the job. I am hoping for your sake that makita does not order a cease and desist on you.

Guys, if you dont have the 3D-Printer to reprint the part and would have to reorder it: Switch the Screws to proper M4x12mm 10.9/12.9 and take the whole plate off every time you change the blade. Granted, that takes time but you will save yourself wear on that Plate and you can clean the housing while at it.

Cool idea man. Dust extraction is crucial. I don't run Makita, I got a midrange store brand type, but runs on Makita clone rails. I've only run one afternoin with it, but noticed if I set DE hose size correct and cut slower that all helps too, but even th3n am having some sawdust come out the front, this loss of suction arbor port fix is better than my secondary hose idea Inwas pondering. 😂

Saw this video, got excited over the product and wanted to support you. I ordered the dust cap(hopefully the correct one-haha) and saw the track end caps to protect the zero clearance strips and ordered that too. Stupid question-as I couldn’t find a video on that particular product, do I leave those end caps on my track while using it or are they just for storage so no damage is done? Thanks and looking forward to receiving them.
@wittworks
@wittworks 2 года назад
Thanks Eric! I think the rail cap is personal preference. Some have mentioned they keep them on all the time to keep from cutting their hands. Some keep them on only for storage. If you don’t need the full track to cut, you can keep them on while you cut. I remove one because I use a rail square a lot.

I’ve never used a track saw, but I have one ordered. I ordered the Mafell. I was wondering if it might be possible to collect almost all of the dust by having an enclosure that moves along with the saw that follows below the wood being cut. Basically a small box that allows the blade to have room with another vacuum hose attached to it.

I don't have a track saw but I am flirting with buying one which is how I ended up on your other track saw vid. I do appreciate good dust collection though. We run sanders and a few festool extractors for field work, so anytime a job can be done cleaner I see it as a selling feature for residential field work.
@wittworks
@wittworks 2 года назад
Thanks! What Festool extractor do you use? I’ve been researching them. Wondering if I should go midi or c27
@Fictitious_Character
@Fictitious_Character 2 года назад
@@wittworks I have two 26's and a 36 ac for the drywall sanders. One of the 26's was purchased in 2012 and has seen a lot of use and I tell myself when it requires replacement I'll swap it out for a Midi with the blutooth option. But the damn thing keeps going lol. For the most part the CFM is mostly the same on their extractors. The 26's and up are all the same CFM, the Midi and the Mini are the same CFM but a little lower than the bigger vacs, and then the 15 is of course the lowest CFM and the most bare bones unit really best suited for cleanup. So other than the lowest bare bones unit it comes down to which size will fit your needs for space versus capacity. The reason I plan on swapping out one of the 26's for a Midi is because I use them a lot for drywall repair work and the smaller size appeals to me for that as well as regular transportation. But depending upon what tool you are using also shows that full power CFM is not required. 5 and 6" sanders I run the sander speed high and the vac low paired with a 27mm hose. Something like the drywall sander the speed of the tool is more mid range and the vac is cranked all the way up with a 36mm hose. A miter saw a shorter 36mm hose and the vac up high. Either way I find them to make a really good extractor that makes their sanders worth investing in. If you do take the plunge on a Festool vac I recommend the Powertec bags that can be ordered through home depot or amazon. They come in well under 50% cost of Festool bags and being a disposable item I have not noticed a difference in performance or quality.
@wittworks
@wittworks 2 года назад
That’s great! I was leaning towards midi. I’d use it for track saw and I want to get a Festool sander. Having the Bluetooth button is huge. Thanks for the powertec tip!
@Fictitious_Character
@Fictitious_Character 2 года назад
@@wittworks Sorry for the novel. I think the Midi is a great size all around. Filters and bags are a little cheaper due to the size and in my case van real estate is valuable. Midi should work well with the track saw.

I know this is an old video, but you don't need to design covers for other brands. There are dozens (maybe more)of STL files (3D printing designs) for almost every brand out there as these are a pretty common print for people (like me) with a track saw and 3D printer. No need to reinvent the wheel.
@wittworks
@wittworks 2 года назад
I design my own so I can legally sell them. Many of the existing STLs aren’t licensed for commercial. Anyone with a 3D printer can, many don’t have one or the desire. Many of the other brands I’ve done (like kreg and Ryobi) don’t have public files yet.
