If you have every found yourself in need of a sturdy wading staff, but didn't want to pay and arm and a leg to have one for yourself then I have the solution in today's video. I designed this multipurpose DIY wading staff that can also double as a walking stick to take care of a great many things. I'll show you step by step how to make what I think is the ultimate multipurpose DIY wading staff or walking stick without using a bunch of expensive tools or materials. Sit back enjoy and thanks so much for watching! God bless!
I've broken down an approximate materials and cost list. Your build might be slightly more or slightly less than $20 depending on what you have on hand at home. I had the sealer and the paracord already so that saved me from purchasing those items which brought my cost to around $15.
1 1/4" x 72" dowel rod $10
1 1/4" rubber leg tip $1.50
1/4" x 1 1/4" Tapcon screw $.45
1/4" x 4" Tapcon screw $.89
Paracord $4.99
Sales Tax $1.06

Total $18.89

I also make many types of staffs,hiking sticks and walking sticks. They are so valuable in many ways. I am a 73 yr old north Georgia Marine veteran that loves the outdoors and am also a cancer survivor. I really enjoyed the great message at the end. We need the love and guidance of the Lord so much in these truly times. Many thanks sir.

1st thing, the burning does another thing. It's called Sho Sugi. If you char it 100% black, then sand it down, your wood will be water proof. Even Red Oak. 2nd, with the burn you put on, should start off with 120 grit and finish up with 180. Good project. Need to make myself a new staff. I lost my old one which was a piece of drift wood from the Pacific.

Hello Dave, Bumped into your video as "Old Man Time" is starting to catch up to me but I'm not yet ready to give up on some of my favorite (and tough to access) smallmouth spots. Your how to build and use the walking staff tips were very appreciated and I'm now a subscriber. Thank you also for the pair of "How To" messages...1.) Making a walking staff and 2.) How to lead a better life. Both are much appreciated! Stay well.

I have made a couple of custom walking staffs for Creek Walking and Golf ball recovery. Hardened 2' square hook with rubber hose on the straight section on the bottom for good surface interface and 2 golf ball recovery cups, one straight one at 90 degrees. 7 ft , 1 1/4 inch hickory shaft, sanded and burnt. An area for enhanced gripping. I also always carry 2 staffs on the river and creek walks as a rule of thumb and based on experience. Second Staff is 5ft 6in. Much Safer. You can push and pull on creek entering's and exit's. My Son and I collected over 300 Golf balls yesterday!😎

I am a relatively new believer. Coincidentally, I have very recently taken up making hiking sticks, to fill a personal need. I have poor balance due to a brain injury. On uneven ground, in poor lighting (too dark, too bright) shade from a tree, poor footing and such I wabble and stumble. It seems as time passes, my memory is also faltering. I recently lost two manufactured hiking sticks I had had for a couple of decades. I am pretty excited about the hiking sticks I have been making from dead fall branches I have found in the woods. I am enjoying making them, the hobby/ new to me crafting, is such a pleasure. I am excited to learn about the suitability of various types of wood and so many multifunctional for a wading stck. While I don't intend to wade in any water much more than ankle deep, I can certainly identify many uses for a wading pole that I can apply to my outdoor wandering experiences and my new favorite craft. Since it seems likely I will lose or leave behind a hiking pole, I would like to think of them as gifts to another to enjoy. Thank you so much for this video. I look forward to following you on RU-vid.

My Dad had one like this issued to him when he was in Burma in WW2 - lots of rivers to ford out there! His was bamboo and the handle could be unscrewed and the shaft broken in two - each joint had a brass screw fitting. Don't know why he brought it home with him as he never used it and it sat in an umbrella stand in the hallway until he was in his late seventies and needed to use a walking stick. My eldest brother shortened it down to ordinary walking stick length and Dad never went out again without it. One day we were about to sit him down on a bench while we did some shopping when a man of his own age stopped, looked at the cane and said "Burma?" Dad said "That's right" to which the man replied "Me too, blood awful wasn't it?" and wandered off. Don't know what happened to it but am tempted to copy your design.

This video couldn't have come out at a better time. I got to hiking again and have fallen in love with hiking staff diy. I've tried unsuccessfully to source my own wood out in the wild but I think a poplar dowel will serve just fine, especially since I can't stand bent sticks. Let us know how the polycrylic holds up, I'm told polyurethane is the best but I'm nervous about oily rags.
@thefrugalsportsman
@thefrugalsportsman Год назад
Glad the video was a help to you! As far as the polycrylic goes, I had it on hand because I make many of my own fishing lures and I dip my saltwater bucktails in the polycrylic and then hang them to drip dry. I use stick on eyes for the bucktails and the poly leaves a nice coating over them sealing them in. They take a great deal of abuse in the saltwater, sand and the rocks and hold up extremely well. I wouldn't think the walking stick would be any different. The poly seems more flexible than the urethane which I think adds to its sealing ability. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching and may God bless you!

I've marked both my walking staffs from the bottom with grooves every 10cm. to half a metre. This enables me to easily gauge the depth of water or loose mud that I may have to cross. It was the normal practise of British boy scout to mark their staffs thus, but in Imperial measured gaps. As yours is a wading staff, why dont you mark it thus as well - ?

It's funny I was just making myself a walking stick to help me when trapping and working on the farm, and my sticks like yours with the T shape. I like doing things by hand so I'm rasping the peaces out of NZ native timber that are pretty hard, at night instead of watching TV or playing computer games. So yeah it will end up being like a tall T shape that's the right hight for me ......I made some diy walnut stain and some beeswax finish, I think what I'm going to do is do a few staining and drying cycles and then I'm going to do a couple of rubbing downs with the bees wax finish to hopefully trap in the stain and make it look really dark . A few weeks ago I made a new handle for a spade that this ladies late husband bought for her years ago .and I've been doing allot of new handles for old tool heads and I'm slowly getting better and upping my game . My aim is to do my stuff for as free as possible and cool ,I'm also a amateur bone carver so I'm just going to do a tight fit ,kinda Dowling the top of the t on and if I have to a couple bone pins to hold it in place and I'll probably put the brass from a old shotgun shell on the end to protect the bottom. Anyway sorry for rambling I'm just slightly proud of myself I'm slowly getting better and learning more , and I like making things that make people happy or help out , hopefully I can make a cool stick for myself and anyone else I know that needs one in the future, I got back problems that's why I need one

Where's your rod when you are using both hands on the handle to find solid footing in the stream bed? Good tutorial!
@thefrugalsportsman
@thefrugalsportsman Год назад
Thanks! I'm sorry I didn't include that in the video as it is a good point. I was more focused on showing how to use the staff that I forgot about showing what to do with the rod. There are a few options: 1) Hold it under your arm (I don't recommend that one because if you stumble you could lose you rod) 2) Make or purchase a belt clip on rod holder 3: Some fishing vest have a loop and latch where you can secure your rod vertically and works well for tying on new lures as well 4) This is the simplest and probably the best. Just place the rod horizontally close to the reel across the one side of "T" and grab both the rod and the top of the staff together. That way you always have a firm grip on your rod and you don't need an additional device to secure it. Hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching and may God bless you!

So glad you found the video a help and thanks too for your encouraging words. I just wanted to encourage you in your closing words. It is so important that we believe, but it is even more important in what we believe and why. A religion is a repetition of things we say and do, that can never save us, but the bible instead calls us into a relationship with God that can. Much different. For so long I felt I was good enough to get to heaven (most of us do). I believed in God and even went to church on occasion. But I failed to understand one thing and that is that I was a sinner that needed a savior. When you and I look at our life against the 10 commandments (Exodus chapter 20) we can see that we are all liars, thieves, adulterers, and more. We all fall way short of God's standard for being good enough (Romans 3:23). We have all turned our back on God. My sin separated me from God and Jesus paid the fine to buy me back (Romans 6:23). When I came to realize that God wanted to have a restored relationship with me and my trust in Jesus was the only thing that could restore it I believed (John 14:6). Once we can understand our need to be forgiven we can turn from our sin and put our faith In Jesus to save us. But believing in Christ needs to be like belief in a parachute to save us. When we trust Jesus to save us with that type of faith and have a change of heart knowing why we need him he will. I'm not sure what you are trusting in today, but I'd encourage you to read the bible for yourself and some of the verses I inserted here to make sure that what you believe in matters. Eternity is a long time and if any of us die in our sins not knowing Jesus as savior hell not heaven will be our final destination and there are not second chances so please if you haven't already seek after God today and put your faith in the only one who can save you, Jesus. I speak this all to you with much love. Thanks again so much for taking the time to share and comment and may God bless you richly as you seek after him!

the staff seems very short.

I guess it all depends on what you want to use it for. It is the right height for me for the ways in which I showed how I use it in the video. If it were longer it might interfere with my walking when stored over my shoulder and it allows me to get the right lean when crossing a stream or river. Some people might like a tall straight staff for walking, but that would go against the design I came up with for my personal use. Hope that helps. Thanks so much for watching and may God bless you!

Refreshing message! Remember, Satan knows your name, but calls you by your sin. God knows your sin, but calls you by your name. Thanks for the vid!

You appear offended that I would share about Jesus. That wasn’t my goal, but think for a minute if the truth and freedom you found was truly something you believed to be real, why would it matter what I shared? It’s funny you mention truth. In the Bible in John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. I share about Jesus because it is all that really matters. Many people claim to have found the truth, but would they be willing to stake their life, as well as eternity on their decision to follow it? Someday each of us will stand before God and give account and the real truth is that unless we place our faith and trust in Jesus we will face hell because we rejected the gift of God’s own son to save us in exchange of a lie. It’s out of love for others that I share the truth about Jesus and how we can know God through him. He said he is the only way. No other truth can save us. All I do is share that message. What others do with it is between them and God. I will be praying that God shows himself to you in a very real and incredible way so that you might experience all he has for you and know the truth about who he is and can be to you. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts and may God bless you!
