In this video I show you how to make a router jig for Dados and Slots.
I seem to be amassing a plethora of woodworking jigs and as often as I can, I am trying to make them do more than one thing and this jig is another of my dual purpose jigs for use on the wood router, it will cut accurate, dados and it will make slots for as, all in one tidy unit.

You make some of the best jigs for wood projects and the good part is that you show how to adjust things when they don't work as expected and that my friend is the mark of a Great Teacher! Thank You for all your hard work in making things easier for all of us!

I love that you include some of the trial and error bits in the video, since it's great reminder that sometimes when problems crop up during a project, it's actually pretty easy to think one's way around them. Also, your channel is a fantastic vicarious way to live my woodworking dreams while I'm living in an NYC apartment and can't have all the power tools I long for! (Though I do now have a wee bandsaw, and I just have to build a rolling cart for her before I can get cutting...)

Nice jig Colin. If you go to the plumbing section of your hardware store, look for toilet flange bolts. They are t bolts, and are very cheap and easy to find.

This is a great sled idea I like how versatile the jig is. Also if you go to plumbing section and ask for the toilet hold down bolts are and buy a bunch of them at different lengths and are all 1/4 by 20 threads ( I'm sorry I don't know the metric conversion) there great to always have on hand.

OMG! I just learned something very important. In all the woodworking videos I've watched previously about making a stopped plunge cut, they've only meantioned using a stop block for repeatability and accuracy. You're the first one that talked about the safety aspect. After you mentioned it, I realized just how dangerous that cut could be without the stop block. The spinning bit could shoot that board off the right side of the router table, dragging your hand right past the bit. Yikes! 🤯 I'm still a newbie at this, so any safety tips are greatly appreciated. This one kept me from figuring it out the hard way. Many, many thanks, Colin! 👍😁

About 5 months ago I bought me a set of dado blades to use on a 10 inch craftsman table saw, but till now I haven't use it, because I need to buy an dados slot or plate to fit the table saw, it is hard to get that part, but after watching your videos, finally get help, thanks for sharing, great job explaining

I made a dado insert for my table saw. RU-vid has a few good videos on how to do this. Search RU-vid for Craftsman table saw inserts. I used the insert that came with my Rigid table saw as a pattern and cut several for my saw. After making the insert, install your dado set, insert the blank insert, turn your saw on and raise your saw dado set slowly. Now you have a zero clearance insert for your dado set. If you do a lot of dados your can do the same thing for each width. You can also use this same process on your regular table saw blade. My blank insert would not go in because my blade wouldn’t lower far enough. I installed a circular saw blade on my table saw and cut a small slot in the blank insert. I the replaced the circular saw blade with my original table saw blade. The cost to do this was $0.00. I used scrap wood and planed it down to the thickness I needed. Inserts can cost, as much as, $40.00.

Hi Colin. Thanks for putting this video together for us. I have been needing one of these for a long time so I thought I'd build this one. To be fair I have very limited knowledge of this craft but want to learn. That's why I watch these "how to videos". During this build I was frustrated that the only measurement you gave us was 28 inches. The rest, I guess, are just that: guesses. So I continue on and made guesses. When it came to the routering of the narrow pieces again there's no indication how long the router slot should be but I guessed. (It would have been nice if you said it didn't matter so we aren't sure but we will keep on guessing) At 6:12 in the video you mention the little sled to cut the slots for the external riders. I still don't understand what these are even for. I had to watch it a few times to realize you've cut 2 more pieces of narrow wood (no mention of sizes) but you must have edited out what they're for. I'm still baffled. I'll guess the sizes but no idea what they're for. If measurements are not important then please tell us. Please explain like we're newbies. Most of us watching are. I don't want to be rude. I really appreciate the knowledge but a bit more detail would be great. Thank you sir.

What thickness of wood did you use? Looks like 3/4? Also, what width did you cut the narrower strips where you cut the slots? Finally, when you cut the dados do you prefer tu use a bit smaller than the width of the wood beig inseted in the dado? Thank you.

@defenderman1000
@defenderman1000 4 года назад
I like the functionality of this jig, but one question comes to mind. The two fences for the slot function are fastened to the dado fences with a slotted and adjustable connection (the 2nd pair of t-bolts you installed) They are therefore adjustable on the base of the dado fence, so is that necessary? given the distance to the face of the dado jig and the slot fence can never be less than 1/2 the router plate minus 1/2 the bit width, why not fix them both on the dado fences and adjust the slot width using the adjustment in the dado jig, especially since you are using spacers in the slot jig?

Nice Jig, how does it work when cutting dados in bookcases? I cut dados for neighbor for his shelving in his garage. I took the sides, put then back to back and clamped to door workbench. Measured each shelf clamped on straight edge and ran the dados. I charged him $20 to do 4 bookcases in less than an hour. The jig looks like too much work for me. I am old and don't like a lot of extra work.

Could you tell me why you used plywood under the jig when you made the first cut in the video. Also should there have been a piece of wood mounted to one end side to make it more like a square to help with lining it up to the cut line, instead of trying to get it in the center just line up one edge.
