Make Ugly Art! Art Talk & Advice On How to Improve as an Artist

I’m so glad I found this video, Yasmina! I’ve been painting for two years, starting at age 60. I’m that person who you described that plans everything out and it’s kind of stressful painting that way. I know this is a mistaken belief and my inner critic’s voice, but I think every painting should be something I could show to the public’s and/or sell. I’m going to take your advice!!

I've been thinking about this a lot lately while working on a painting I dislike for my art class... and how it makes me uncomfortable because I'm not used to *sitting* in this feeling of imperfection. This video really captures my thought that I'm learning new things by continuing with the piece (not just about art, but about myself as well), and having someone as talented as you reinforce this idea means a lot! Great advice Yasmina! So true! I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me over the years. I even have paintings that I abandoned years ago, some that were put in storage and forgotten about that I reworked years later into new artworks. It is amazing what happens when we look at our art again with fresh new eyes. I have been following you on SkillShare Yasmina . Really enjoying your classes! Keep up the great work!

This is really refreshing! I just got into watercolors a couple months ago and it's going ok, but today i was kind of going "hmmm... Not sure what I'm doing" lol. I also have a whole basket full of "ugly art", mostly because i can''t bear to just throw the paper away, so it's more of a scrap basket. But your advice here about creativity and having fun with it etc. is really speaking to me and inspiring me. It's the perfect pick-me-up! Thank you!

I've been watching your lessons on skillshare, you are so inspiring and encouraging. I'm old, and sadly never really took my art seriously when I was young, I was good and could have been great if I'd put in some real effort. Now I have a medical condition that causes bad tremors and regret deeply not using my talents when I could. I am now trying to learn how to loosen up and work with my shaking, fighting it only makes it worse, and you are being a great help to me with videos like this, thank you, and to anyone reading this, don't let time pass you buy, if you have any urge to make art, do it and do it lots, I only have a handful of pieces to remind me of what I was once capable of, I would love to have loads of sketch books to look through and enjoy, but I left it too long, don't make the mistakes I did, make art, all art, great art and ugly art, you will thank yourself when you are older :)

I'm starting at age 50. I've always loved to draw and paint but my ugly art did not inspire confidence when I was younger. A month ago I started sketching and painting again. Every day, for hours. My instinct is always to give up after the first 10 minutes of drawing because I just don't like the way it looks most of the time but then when I keep going I actually end up thinking it's not as bad as first though
