Good news folk. I've been building my own AC filters for over 30 years and it's simple and effective. Sure, it's not as effective as the 2K$ units discussed but an incredible upgrade for virtually no money. You simply wire up a commercially available 20amp EMI/RFI filter which you can find for between $5 and $30. It takes about 10 minutes and does an amazing job. If you are comfortable fixing broken extension cords, you can wire in the filter module. All modules are similar but the important thing is to use a minimum of a 20 amp module. Any less actually wrecks the sound.
Hello! Out of curiosity, do you plug your amp(s) into the Puritan? I know the Puritan is great with source components, but I'm really curious if it restricts performance of high current amps.
I bought a Puritan 156 after your great advice Mickey, not from you unfortunately as I live in the UK. It made a huge difference to my system, not subtle at all. I previously used Isotek and Furman but the Puritan gave me back my dynamics and then some. Thanks Mikey 😊

You are 100% correct about this Mikey. I fitted some DIY mains conditioners internally into every piece HiFi component I use on my system based on the DIY design exploits of Lukasz Fikus (Lampizator). They perform extremely well and everything you described when you use a good quality mains conditioner. It doesn't cost that much to implement for each item either.
Puritan audio rules! Thanks to Micky's video I bought the puritan 136 and it improved my system significantly. Thank you Micky for your HiFi educational video.

Good solid advice, Mike. I have been using Puritan PSM 156 before it got popularized by the internet community. It is an awesome device. Without Puritan in the system, the music sounds lifeless. This is type of change that once you hear it, you cannot go back, like a nice black coffee :)
I put a ferrite core on the 12V power cable to my dac and it sounded markedly better. Just loop the cable around the ferrite core and it creates a simle LP filter.
Power conditioners are a terrific addition to a hifi system. Extremely easy to hear the difference: testable and repeatable. Not worth arguing with those who think it can’t improve the sound.
This is a great series, Mikey, and it's getting the basics right, which pays dividends in the end. I didn't muck around. I have 3 20 amp dedicated lines on single receptacles. Best thing I ever did. My mono amps going to the wall straight, and the other line has my filtration for the rest of the components in my rig. This is really worth doing. You don't know what's there until you can't hear it anymore.🎧🙂👍
That's in Reality at best 10% of a complete solution regarding only power for Ultimate Level Performance. Absolutely Huge Audible improvements are available beyond what You have done.
@davidcross890 nobody's saying there isn't more to consider. But having good clean power makes an audible difference in a high-end audio system without doubt. As said above, it's one of the parts for consideration when you are building a room with a high-end audio system in it.
@@shanestephenson8423 The dedicated lines deliver only a minor point of improvement Both audible and measurable and definitely do not deliver what I know to be truly clean power. It's definitely better than nothing but again only a minor improvement
@davidcross890 That's a very subjective statement. It very much depends on the quality of power you have circulating around in your house. How many dirty appliances polluting the power into your listening room. And further to that, depending on the quality and resolution of the equipment, you have plugged into that power. All of this is totally subjective. So doing dedicated lines is only going to help the situation, which was my original point.
@@shanestephenson8423 dedicated lines do not in itself bring about clean power and virtually every system should be wrapped around real circuits and real technologies that guarantee real clean power AT ALL TIMES NO MATTER WHAT not the sad excuses of SUPPOSED DEDICATED LINES THAT WORK SUPPOSED MIRACLES OR THE clean power filters, power cords, power conditioners, and regenerators currently being foisted on the public for ridiculously high prices and joke level performance.
Question for Mikey. I have a PrimaLuna Integrated Tube Amp. I also use Musical Fidelity solid state separates. Both amps are used for 2 channel listening. I use a Parasound 5+ channel amp & a Marantz preamp/processor.I will definitely hook up my main source component...my OPPO Blu-ray, Streamer/DAC, El-Cheapo VRC Player & cable box. Finally, I have a Musical Fidelity Integrated Amplifier that powers my 7 channel speakers in my surround sound set up. Which of these products should be hooked up to my Puritan 156 AC Purifier? I only have 6 receptacles on the Puritan 156. I'm really hoping that I don't need to purchase a 2nd Puritan 156 AC Purifier. They don't come cheap. Thanks!
1 always use a variac set to 120v especially in summer months. Best 70 bucks you’ll ever spend. Don’t trust the variac always set the voltage with a multimeter. 2 always utilize a home run for every amp. Never connect 2 amp on one plug. 3 get a good spike protector. 4 live very happily ever after and save a lot of money.
Agreed. I put in a 10 gauge circuit, all on the same leg with a wave modulator just outside the circuit board as a filter. Of course, upgraded outlets went along with it. The improvements were not subtle.
Back in the 90’s I was getting the ‘itch’ to upgrade something. Monster power conditioners came out, and were very affordable. Damned if it didn’t make a huge improvement. Blacker background, and tightened up bass significantly. I called my audiophile buddy, and told him to go out and get one. He had the same reaction.
Yeah Man. I love your Channel. And bits of advice. AC Power. So the best upgrade I have made is asking my electrician to run a single line from the meter box to my power outlet. A HOME RUN. I used LAPP OLFLEX 2.5. The same cable I use to make my power cables. Instant result. I'm still using a Power strip. SUPRA. They seem to work but I don't really know. DO YOU KNOW ABOUT SUPRA ? WOULD YOU RATE THEM ? Hello from New Zealand. Cheers
Although I will add that there is much more to do in the audio system. The conditioner is important, but there are plenty of other places where improvement can be made. One thing will not be phenomenal, but in many different critical audio points it will be.
Thanks for speaking your truth! I just finished your Dark Truths Playlist. Do you think Lumin and Naim are one of those over priced brands? I was looking at a Lumin S1 or a NAIM NDX2 for a Streaner/Dac. Or do you have another recommendation for 5-10k?
Most manufactures of SS big class A mono blocks recommend going direct to the wall, (no filter). I have two 8awg dedicated lines going to Furutech GTXd outlets. Would you expect better results putting the SS class A mono blocks on the 156??
Hello Mikey, I'm so glad I found your channel - all top notch and valuable info that resonates with me a lot... 🙂 Quick question, I plan to install a dedicated line for my hifi rig ended witn a Furutech GTX-D NCF(R) wall socket and support it with a Puritan PSM 156. My question is - as I want to build a Furutech AC chords, to save some cost at the beginning, will I be beter starting with lower grade AC plugs like FI-11(R) series combined with a top of the line DPS 4.1 cable or should I rather spend more on higher level plugs with a lower tier cable like S032 or S055. Any other recomendations on AC plugs and cables at this price tier is most welcome of course. Thank you.
No BULLSHIT Mikey..wow I really like your attitude..it’s refreshing. Mikey I have a dedicated line (20amp) and I have a question. Is it safe to have the McIntosh MA12000 connected to the PURITAN rather than the directly to the wall outlet? I don’t know if the 12000 is one of those amplifiers that you are told to avoid equipment like the Puritan filter. On another note Mike you recommended me calling you about the 3.7 Maggies…sorry I did not get back to you. I had a lot going on plus vacation. Just wanted you to know I have decided to stay with the 1.7i’s…I was trying to reason with myself about the size of the 3.7’s but I cannot.. I have a 13’by14’ room with 8’ceilings. I do have your fuse upgrade kit 👍 I keep waiting for you to make any improvements on the 1.7i as you did withe LRS…maybe something smaller 😂VERY IMPRESSIVE Mike Thank you for your videos
Mikey, You should have told everyone that I can listen to WFAN in NY when I plug the noise sniffer into my outlets. It sounds like an old AM radio. The Puritan did wonders for my system.
Super helpful videos, thank you! 🙏Puritan 156 is amazing. Is it worth upgrading to their Ultimate power cable? And would you use their cables for components as well?
Good stuff. If you like what you got do some filtering and conditioning to go further. My driver's i bought have a grounding terminal. You don't have to use it but when you do it's a quieter background and more subtleties are available. I noticed some tannoy speakers have this terminal as well. Probably others I'm not aware of. I won't buy the bullshit conditioner so i am going to wait. I'm sure it's a satisfying tweak, it makes perfect sense when it's explained properly. Mikey did that really well. Thanks.
So I have to know. Because it seems like I've read what to do but it's confusing. What do I plug into the psm 156? Amp, pre amp, sub woofers? What about dac streamer turntable and phono pre? Can they all go into one or buy two. I didn't think it was a good idea to plug a turntable into one.
Hiya Mikey I've been looking at some conditioners and silencers and was wondering what your opinion was on the Russ andrews range of conditioners. Failing that the puritan is on my shopping list. Cheers Mikey, Mark🙏
Hey Mike, i have a question about audio lol... anyways since 1990 when i was able to afford to get into nice 2 channel audio equipment i have always used separates!! and since around late 1997 my gear has been a Onkyo M504 power amp (love the big meters) and driven by an Adcom tuner/preamplifier... i have been very happy with the sound it's given all these years, but wonder if i go with a nice integrated amp for my next system i will notice a chance in quality... my budget for my next system upgrade (after all these years) is probably around 10K give or take 2K lol... BTW, the speakers i been content with since 1998 are the Paradigm Reference Studio/100 Loudspeakers, so happy with them still as i never needed any subwoofers added to my system...
Can I use these as a pair? One for 120v 60Hz and one 240v 60Hz in the same system? I have custom Quested 3-way active speakers which use 240v 60Hz amplifiers for the mids and bass drivers and 120v 60Hz amps for the AMT drivers.
@@OCDHIFiGuy Yes I understand that the single AC cable coming into the box is then processed and then split into 6 individual home runs. Correct? But some people do not putting power amps on conditioners at all. Or if I have separate 20A drops at each amp location.
Any Tube Amp users feel that the Regulator Tube null and Voids the use of Power Conditioners? I do use a Voltage Regulator, but thats due to the House we are in being 100yrs old. An Poorly maintained prior to is. I was thinking I would just get one for the other components, and leave my tube Regulated Mono Blocs alone.
Puritan is non current limiting and outperforms the current limiting PS Audio, which actually makes its own form of oscillator noise from what I understand.
so every time i talk to a techie they tell me that when the ac line converts to dc it is a clean sine wave. I have a regenerator that seems to improve things but the measurement guys don't buy it....
Sounds like a great conditioner......I have 6 low wattage units & 6 High power Class D amps. I'd like to hear your thoughts about implementation. Thanks Ocd Bro
I certainly agree 100% about managing AC power. Check out Plixar. I use the BAC 3000 preconditioner. 40 kg (massive) transformer with 3000W made in Germany. I only use it for two mono amps. They make smaller pieces for lower demand pieces like a preamp or DAC. This company is not that big but the engineer James Soh is technically good. You should think about rep this guy. He is not represented in the U.S.
That cock bag was a shill for PS... Ive compared them. They CLAMP dynamics... Ive sold roughly 50 pieces of the Puritan and at least 5 of those replaced PS Regenerator.. That thing is OK< but its not high level Audiophile grade like Puritan is.... Just google it , people are freaking out about it ..
Not PS Audio specifically, but re-gen in general is typically no bueno, ... the piece will fail. Whereas passive iso platforms possess inherent superiority absent the thermal transform losses. I've built my own for 35yrs. High ampacity, low impedance, star grounding.
Great Vid. I just purchased a Puritan 156 with their upgraded power cord called 'The Uimate Power Cord'. Does anybody own The Ultimate Power Cord? If so, do you think it is worth the extra money 💰? I was about $600.00 😮
@@OCDHIFiGuy i saw the dead bout 85x. Didn't like Phish. Don't do the thing where you compare them to the dead. For one thing the music is completely different. They are who they are After Jerry died I checked them out. Have been on board now for 25 yrs. They kick ass Mike...and they have the same sprit you bring to the table
This would be perfect for an A/B demo comparison on the same system run with and without the power conditioner. Seems like a no-brainer, especially since it appears that Mikey is going to be selling these.
I stopped at their corner showcase room at Axpona 2019 and was very polite about asking questions about UL compliance with the fuses and accessories since compliance and safety is part of my professional life for power electronics. They asked me to leave the room, even though there were no other customers in the room. If legitimate, gold plated contact fuses are desired, there is one legitimate manufacturer with safety compliance and those can actually be purchased at far more reasonable prices from Mouser and Digikey.
It's gotten to a point where I can't listen to my hifi anymore. When the power is good I can listen for hour and hours but 4 out of 5 times it's atrocious. Weirdest of all is it's totally random. One day I can be listening at 7pm and the sound is sublime. Another day it's 11pm and it's unlistenable 😣
Dedicated line is very good to eliminate other influences from Lamps, TVs and so on. But don’t think you will hear a difference…maybe…I don’t hear a difference in my system;) but a good filter is audible to 100%. I can just agree with OCD in my experience. greetings
i have installed a dedicated fused board with 5 separate supplies to each of my appliances. when i measure the socket theres still lots of noise. why will that be?
And here you are fluffing and BSing us. There are many other speakers that have special compounds for their cabinets: Wilson, Magico, and many others, so yours isn’t the only 1 that builds like this. When filtering, especially for the amps, you put a veil/restriction on the sound. This is why most audiophiles don’t use filtering for their amps. Instead of filtering, I would look at power regeneration units that don’t compromise the amp
And here you are consuming my content and engaging with it... Go buy Magico or Wilson then if those are the guys you want to support, i dont care,, most people will buy those brands anyways. My brands are for the few, you like the brands for the many.... Enjoy...
I'm sorry the only real filter is regeneration like the ps audio powerplant. All those passive filters don't regulate voltage which is by FAR more important for digital componets. Ossicaltors in all your digital gear are voltage dependent for their clock and constant voltage flux is so so so damaging.
LOL, guess what ? It regenerates the noise as well... We dont live in India, so unless you have brownout problems, nobody needs voltage reg.. LOL, VXCO is old technology, TCXO was better and OCXO was best, so NO absolutely NOT. Only very old standard not really audiophile DACs use TCXO, and in todays age, the oscillators no longer use silly Quartz whatsoever.. they are much more accurate and they self adjust... so you are talking about old technology. PS regenerator is NOT what I would recommend at all...
@@OCDHIFiGuy they do NOT regenerate the noise. This is fact and can EASILY be measured with an oscilloscope. Not just the crystals but any dac using a chip the chips PLL circuit runs off voltage. Voltage regulation is huge. Go ahead make a video a/B a ps audio powerplant vs your filter. I bet you won't.
For the ABSOLUTE finest reproduction possible that sadly but simply embarasses even the costliest designs available You need the type of filtration/ conditioning/ regeneration that I have. I had to invent, design, and build my own. All units i measurement and listening test compared failed to meet my criteria. To be direct, i have VERY HIGH STANDARDS AND REQUIREMENTS. My unite have Dynamics without clamping limited ONLY to your mains breaker capacity which for many is 200amps and the absolute cleanest power EVER CREATED that leaves all others tested in the dust. My dedicated networked power cords perform the same for my individual components. The measurements and sonics tell the whole story. Sonic bliss without equal. My units take cheap generator power and make it into better than filtered and conditioned grid power in my easily repeatable tests.
@@OCDHIFiGuy have directed and guided several DES phds in telecom, the FAA, led and advanced laser technology, microwave communication and power conversion sciences all with ZERO DEGREES
@@FOH3663 of course that's true but most people have ZERO UNDERSTANDING of dynamic compression amongst several other Power Supply and Circuit DISTORTIONS that translate into SUBSTANTIAL audible and measurable degradations of what is possible in reproduction
