take this advice with caution… big brushes may be forgiving but they also make it harder to improve and catch your mistakes. if you’re a beginner or trying to get better at art, i’d advise you to use a thin and opaque brush to force yourself to build line confidence as well as put more thought and care into the lines you draw on the canvas. don't develop bad habits
Completely agree. I see a lot of beginner artists do the same mistake of sketching their initial draft with a transparent, non defined brush and it can hinder the process if you can’t see what can be improved. I used to sketch with a transparency by pressure brush and as soon as I converted to an opaque brush my art started looking way better
For me personally going in with a bigger brush really helps to define what kind of shapes you wanted to draw. Saying it may develop a bad habit is true, but talking in a beginner's perspective, forcing thin lines will just makes it harder for them. Sure in the long run they might appreciate the struggle but most beginners would want a comfortable start where they will not loose any kind of motivation. Besides what does beginner artist indicates if they are not making mistakes.
Personally I find that starting out with a thicker, less opaque brush to block out shapes first then going in after with a thinner brush on top of the rough sketch works quite well
Let people draw how they want to draw, there is no right or wrong way when making art lmao This is incredibly silly, art does NOT have to follow any sort of guidelines and it should be up to the artist.
@@probablyhuman9947 she called a drawing of a black womans anatomy gorilla..if you don’t believe me Rin has a great video on it called Kooleen’s insane tutorials
The Kooleen incident really exposed so many hypocrites 💀 love how art is all about "draw in whatever style you want", "different artstyle exists" until they do something controversial and suddenly from the start she's a bad person who only stays in her comfort zone and negatively affect other artist because of her style. Literally no other style will be criticized the same way manhwa or anime style got, because of ✨️Double standard✨️. Yall just got to leave people who only want to draw in this one specific style alone. Also the entitled mfs who are saying "i don't think beginners should learn from kooolen..." btch stop policing art
And they're right, many times she gave bad advice, probably because she didn't actually want people to learn, she doesn't want them to become a real competition. Have you ever seen someone who actually got better because of her tips? Even this guy doesn't draw better than her. And her art is nothing special, the best I can say is that it has no mistakes like most artists who draw in her style, but could be better, could develop more of her colour theory, composition etc. Btw I don't care about her first drama too much, her editing was cringe since day one, but I still believe she went too far with mean comments about that other creator she drew.
Idk who this koleen is but "bigger brush can help you be less scared of mistakes." is not necessarily true. It can also very easily make you unconciously avoid/not notice fundamental problems in your sketches as well. I'd recommend just tackle the problem at the root, learn the facial planes + anatomy, and I promise you your line quality and line confidence will get better naturally. After that just learn how to control lightweight when you're linearting. This way you avoid very basic anatomical mistakes when you're already way deep in the rendering progress.
She shouldn't be giving serious art advice. Her art isn't terrible but her "tutorials" are not good for beginners to follow. I think most people see "pretty anime art" and start by replicating her style when they should get a good understanding of how anatomy works.
this aged well. ps: I'd like if we didn't start fights in the comments 😇 let's all just be nice to eachother and shit, I didn't even expect any replies to this comment
@@Pongocity. yes, this is my opinion, everyone makes mistakes. All the fans were looking at her for her good art and content but now after one mistake everyone is judging her, this is just sad. And also another opinion of mine, what she did wasn't even that deep.
It's quite good but I think some intentions can be lost along the way. I'm not a digital artist so I don't know if it works well or not , but with some general speculation I think I can say that some important details such as line weight can get lost along the way. Line weight is super important even in general doing sketches with an air brush it can generally make your art seem stiff because you don't have an exact idea of where you lines should go . The selection area is just too big. Maybe a medium size brush would help? I don't know I just don't like how the line art looked (Edit: It's perhaps the softness of the brush that makes the selection area for line art less instinctive.) Anyways good video 👍
Deff not the size of the brush, its the texture. Airbrushes are too soft to get any line weight. You should use either your normal brush at a larger size or a watercolour brush, both sized down and NOT IN BLACK. I've never seen a professional artist who does their sketch in black.
unpopular opinion here, but i actually like sketching with the airbrush, and i kind of do recommend it to sketch-but _only_ as a first sketch, or i like to call it, 'outline sketch'. outline sketch is just where i dump my raw ideas and doodle on first, trying to get an idea on how to draw my idea, with also trying to get my desired silhouette. and then after that i do a refined sketch with the pencil brush. this works better for me than just straight up sketching first with the pencil brush tbh
@@Pabloski_dabest she draws black people with asian facial anatomy. She called the proportions characteristic of black people incorrect and monkey-like

Your not funny also that was false information that people made for her side profile comment she didn't have intention of offending anyone when making it she didn't know what ot truly meant
@@kehindeanimshaun6100 Yes but she still did and she is very ignorantly racist and colourist my guy. Look up rin her video on it speaks wonders and might actually get you to see it from a better and perspective
Y'all stop with the "this aged well" sarcastic ass comments. She just called a jaw she made gorilla like because it looked like an underbite in the angle it was at, but a lady took it out of context and got WAY too heated when it was not directed at anyone!
She "fixed" the portrait of a black woman and combining her previous comments she is definitely racist when it comes to beauty standards. Do you literally need to defend a basic artist that doesn't know anatomy? If she used a reference she would she how stupid she is. Her art tutorials are terrible. What is there to defend about her?
I do this too! I been using a rough pencil brush for my sketches for years and only recently started using a big airbrush-like brush. I've also just been using the eraser to clean it up, which is a lot easier than painstakingly redrawing the same line over and over
I have a random lineart tip (WORKS FOR MY ARTSTYLE): Don't be afraid of making gaps between lines, sometimes you may zoomout and dislike it but leaving a gap that is still able to be understood can add charm.

It's actually impressive that the art community has so few brain cells they don't know the difference between racist comments (intentional or not, still racist) and 'roasting art'.
Can ya’ll stop comparing Kooleen to Colleen Balinger please. Their names are similar, but their situations are very different. Colleen groomed some kids. Kooleen just made an insensitive statement about someone’s side view drawing. Comparing them is going a bit to far.
I compare all collen/kollen. One is a groomer, othe writers books that romanticise abuse and the other is racist. Unholy trinity. Yeah grooming is more severe but there is coincidence that people use to make fun of tragical situation to cope. Neither of them is going to jail so in the eyes of law they are equal.
to those kooleen fans just a heads up that shes racist. Heres some things she did! She said the c-slur (shes filipino btw! not chinese.). She called edges "4th eyebrows"?? how do u mess up that badly.. She called a side view drawing (which seems to have a black woman's features) "gorilla looking". Some more stuff is that she has an annoying forced mommy voice, bad case of same face syndrome, (like add some spice how u gon draw miguel ohara like a 20 yr old like cmon girl that aint miguel thats michael atp) and said something about a character drawing having $A charges or something which seems like a very unnecessary comment and can make many people uncomfortable! (also she made a joke saying something like "anyussy" like.. isnt that a child.?) Her humor just consists of the same jokes over and over again like.. its not funny its straight up annoying. If ur still gonna be a kooleen fan whether because of her art or something else, then so be it! go support an annoying unfunny racist artist, you do you :)
