Awesome. Very new to leather crafting....like 2 days in. I just made my first knife sheath and have about 7 axes that require some. This will be great practice! Super! You're very concise and a great teacher. Thanks!
I'm new to leatherworking as a hobby and followed this video when making my own axe sheath and found it very helpful. I made some mistakes, but it's all part of learning. Thanks for producing these videos. I've found them all very informative.
If you use a jumbo tip felt marker to trace it will give you the 1/4" you need for your filler. I learned this while making patterns for stained glass.
Great starter project for me. . . I have a dozen axes lying around. Where did you get that nice skiving knife and the clamp you use to hold your projects?
Hiya, I got the clams from Abbey England. You can get some desk top one from a company called dream factory and they look really good. The knife I use was handmade by my friend, i'm not sure if he is making them at the moment but you can get a similar knife from George Barnsley and Sons, it's called a single head knife.
Very nicely done, wish I had the tools to do it, you made it look easy. I think it would be cheaper to pay you than purchase the tools but, Im looking into the tools now.
Hi; First I thank You . Your teaching was a treat to recievr. Wish you could could show you tooling better for I as a DIY am looking at some of them small bits of info. Yes I like this video , hope to see more ....You ever do a billhook ? I need one for that's my lattest build.
+HonestDoubter haha yes my workshop is rather cold, it's in a Victorian workhouse with single glazing and 0 mains heating so it's a case of layers and getting as close to the gas heater as possible! 😂
His Jo, just watched this after making my first bit of leather work .... an axe sheath. Am I correct in the fact your awl made the holes through the filler leather strips , the pruning irons only marking hole positions which you then push through ? All the best, thanks Mat
Awesome! As always! :) How do you keep your knife so sharp?? I still haven't been able to cut with mine like you! Maybe it's not sharp enough?? :/ Thanks! :)
Hi +Lisa Jayne Williams glad you liked the video 😁 I use a few different methods to keep the knife sharp. I will shape it with an oil stone (when I've abused it too much) and then use a strop board with a mix of carborundum powder and tallow on for day to day polishing.... I will do a video 😂
Hi Seb, I got is custom made by Denis from Celtic Knife Craft on Etsy www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CelticKnifeCraft?ref=search_shop_redirect he's busy sorting his house out after he moved just before Christmas but if you message him he will get back to you. Jo
Easy to follow your project, but what about fix the axe little bit? It is so nice sheath on so rusty axe. And also the wooden handle whould be nice with little bit of care.
Jo, I find your tutorials extremely helpful as I'm about to take the plunge in a bid to make a couple of axe sheaths. However it's a case of in at the deep end, as I have not worked leather before. I have one question though, in the tutorial as you commence your sewing by saying " I'll stitch this double hand stitch as always " does that mean you are using saddle stitch as in your sewing tutorial, or a different type of stitch or am I just being dumb?. Also how similar (if at all) is saddle stitch to lockstitch?.
Hi Julian, glad the videos are helping you. I used double hand stitching/saddle stitch for all my hand stitching projects, I guess it's just an odd thing I say.
Jo, you probably get asked this quite a lot but what knife is that? The head/pattern knife you used in the video. I really like it. I love your work too. Thank you for sharing your work and knowledge. Happy New Year!
Hi +Sean Brown I got my knife custom made by Denis from Celtic Knife Craft on Etsy he has just moved house but you can email him if you are interested in one. www.etsy.com/uk/shop/CelticKnifeCraft I love mine so much, the steel he used is top notch
