I hope you understand how dangerous it is to mix 70:30 flash powder IN THAT LARGE OF A QUANTITY so carelessly. Potassium perch and Al powder is the flash powder mixture used in m-80’s and most fireworks. IT CAN DETONATE FROM STATIC ELECTRICITY

I have found to get a louder explosion, I wrap the plastic bag very tight with several layers of duct tape. I have tested this several times since I sell the "Sonic Boom" exploding targets. I have found that if I merely pour the contents into the container that was provided, at times it will just blow a hole in the side of the container.

This came from the old recipe for match heads. It used a small amount of crushed glass to increase sensitivity. Put a small amount wet on paper. Let dry, then shoot it. It would work as a primer for your Tannerite.

the Al/copper oxide works well 10 Cu.Ox. : 2.26 AL if 1 there is an immediate hard surface such as metal backing plate or use gravel rocks and just enough mixture to cover all the rocks and fill voids and make a paper wrap/tape bundle (or tin foil instead of paper but this is messier), add titanium and/or magnesium turnings for dramatic effects. And no there is not a danger of the rocks flying everywhere like bullets or shrapnel......they just basically fall down, maybe only if the mix gets "doctored"
@douglasmatheson403
@douglasmatheson403 2 года назад
And I Know anyone reading knows better but still keep your distance when making the mix or shooting at the mix. but also use extreme caution either mixing or handling as this stuff is actually sensitive as heck..it takes lots of heat before actual reaction occurs (not heat sensitive.), but with the rock method... accidental dropping a target can cause misfortune, (usually throwing (not even that hard) a "rockball" target at something hard will set off chemical reaction)

I have shot the original Tannerite targets (made just a few miles north of where I used to live in Oregon), and ones I made myself with ammonium nitrate and aluminum powder, and both worked well. I have also shot Tannerite's .22 sensitive targets, which were louder. NONE of them worked as well as you composition with ammonium nitrate, potassium perchlorate, aluminum powder, and aquarium gravel. I know that flash powder produces a fairly good bang (I usually set it off with an electric match), but the combination of flash powder and ammonium nitrate was incredible. I made one batch which I put into a ziplock bag, then wrapped tightly with Gorilla duct tape (all of these mixes work best when confined tightly - even the ones in plastic jars). I then taped the bag to the top eight inches of a heavy duty metal "T-post" (fence post). I shot it with a .22 LR from about 50 feet. I'd upload a photo if I could - the top of the post was bent into an "S" shape by the blast, one of the loudest I have heard yet. Thanks for your recipe. I'm going to try the little "diamond cups" (did I hear that right?), "condiment cups" or whatever. They produced a bang as loud as your bigger gravel targets, with far less chemicals, which means many more targets for the same cost. After all, I don't really need any more "S" shaped T-posts :-) Thanks for your video. I'll check out some more of what you have produced.

No, probably not but if you mix 2 to1 potassium perchlorate to red phosphorus very carefully in small Amounts and stick it between 2-1 inch stick on bullseye target stickers. Red phosphorus can usually be bought in small amounts on eBay or you can scrape it off the striker part of boxed matches. Some Match heads have potassium chlorate on them which will work for The potassium perchlorate. A razor will work for turning match heads into a fine powder. Using the diaper method to mix both chems is the only safe way to mix these chems Together. I pushed a small amount Through a screen and set the stuff off. So please be very careful and only mix a very small amounts.

I think if you ground the prills of AN down to powder in a ball mill, then mix with 3x aluminum, it would work. All the .22 sensitive stuff that, according to the ATF; does not use potassium perchlorate, only Al powder. Are a very fine powder, and the bag of oxidizer is very large in comparison to what you would use for non .22 sensitive targets.
@thenorthforty1032

The standard Tannerite mix is very safe. Once people try to make it more sensitive, they will succeed eventually. I work with very sensitive recipes for fireworks and would be dead if I shook them or tossed it on a table. The old timers I learned from wouldn't use plastic tools around the scary stuff. You're flirting with stumbling onto one like that. And need to behave with more respect. Do you see that bang downrange? Now picture that in your hands a foot from your face. Maybe this isn't for you. But a guy in the audience needs it. Fireworks are a fantastic hobby. But following recipes and using methods that are established as safe will keep your hands attached. I have known 2 guys who had accidents. One smoked pot while working. He simply rubbed some dry crackle mix on a screen. It went off and the fireball burned his lungs killing him. Another guy just lost his right hand and eye. He was making big firecrackers with aluminum and perchlorate. It's really friction sensitive and similar to your mix.

Word of advice, mix yoir perchlorate and aluminum using diaper method or something that doesnt have the chance to have static dischsrge. What you javemade is basically flash powder
@thenorthforty1032
@thenorthforty1032 6 лет назад
I'll definitely take that into consideration. Although I've tried to set the stuff off with Piezoelectric sparks, friction as well as impact. Potassium Perchlorate gets a bad rap from its predecessor potassium chlorate the more sensitive of the two. Needless to say you must treat both with respect. Thanks again for the advice.

I was intending to try the KClO4/Al +AN mixture myself. But I stumbled into a pretty awesome combination by accident. I have yet to dial in exact ratios, so you may need to tinker with it a little, I just know that failed detonation were always the result of not enough Al. But here it is. Put your AN in a blender and turn it to powder (as kevin suggests, and this makes a huge difference in and of itself). Use about 150 grams AN and 10-15 grams each of your Al and Pyrodex. I always do what Kevin does with a sandwich bag and duct tape. And hole smokes. It made tannerite look like a children’s toy. I need to dial in my ratios, but I assure you that it can be impressive. I think the addition of the aquarium gravel would benefit this as well, it may be worth toying with smokeless powder as well. I have gotten equal quantity’s of ANFO blends to go high order when the bags are taped together and confined to. But I will also note that simply grinding the AN and using a touch more aluminum I s nearly as good. Thanks for the video!

Just to clarify - your adding the al and Pyrodex after you've finished with the blender, right? I hope so, anyway.
@jimcummings638
@jimcummings638 6 лет назад
Dean DeanN sometimes I’ll throw the pyrodex in the blender. I found 54 caliber pyrodex pellets on clearance at fleet farm for 10 bucks a box, and it’s easier to blend them in. If using the granulated pyrodex, there is no need to blend. But the aluminum doesn’t go in until the end! But is not an especially sensitive mixture, I believe the binders and other ingredients in the pyrodex make it much more stable than ordinary flash. I’ve since been toying around with other mixtures, and would have to say that the “aquarium gravel” recipe is probably the best. I’ve had some impressive results with the pyrodex to, but it is not Rimfire sensitive. Also would add that grinding the AN makes a big difference. The only thing I would be able to add to these formulas is how one can incorporate xylene into the picture and substantially increase the brissance of the explosion. if using to take out beaver dams or demolish something, this is especially useful, but there is a legal line in the sand somewhere, and I’m not sure what side of it that lies on...... I’ll send a link showing what three ponds can do though😊

Potassium Perchlorate is the safer option to potassium chlorate. You Can do your own testing but I've tired setting the stuff off with impact and piezo electric spark. Potassium Perchlorate throughout history gets a bad rap from it's predecessor potassium chlorate.

Something else you can try to increase sensitivity is to pulverize the AN. I have done this by using a cheap coffee grinder. I’ve also just put it into a ziplock and rolled it with a rolling pin. Grinder works better but rolling pin works satisfactorily. The main reason for AN’s insensitivity is due to its shape. The prills leave a lot of empty spaces between them and when you shoot them with a slower projectile they tend to be able to move out of the way rather than to be crushed and heated by the projectile. Grinding the AN into a powder allows a more tightly confined end product. Also by grinding the AN you end up with a much better incorporation of chemicals in your mixture, so they will react more completely for more power. AN needs a high heat fuel to be effectively sent into detonation, so it doesn’t surprise me that the MG would produce a more powerful product than the AL, as Kevin Bolin suggested. I’ll have to try that myself.
@thenorthforty1032
@thenorthforty1032 6 лет назад
Thanks for the tip, I've been thinking of getting one of those marble rolling pins for other pyro stuff anyway.
@jimcummings638
@jimcummings638 6 лет назад
I bought a cheap blender for 14 bucks at Walmart. Works great for this. So long as you don’t add the aluminum you’ve nothing to worry about. Also, Ag grade AN is pretty dense, rolling pin or even mortise and pestle is a son of a gun. Those little round prills will be all over the place! And the blender might even be cheaper.....

Reliable pyro sources indicate that plastic ziplock bags are safe. I have made a lot of small batches of Al/KClO4 flash powder (noise makers to drive magpies away from our fruit trees) with no issues whatsoever. I ground myself several times before I sit down to handle the chemicals. The bags are never the issue., it is the hands. If I mix some during the winter (cold, dry air and walking across carpet creates static electricity on my skin), I often wear a grounding device that goes from my wrist to the closest outlet (clipping onto the cover screw is sufficient). [I say "my skin" rather than my hands, because when I kiss my wife, we sometimes get an arc between our noses.] I do "diaper" my homemade black powder when I make it. The presence of the sufur in the recipe makes it a bit more sensitive.
