I made this bag! From knowing nothing about leatherworking a couple of years back to today and having learned mostly from this channel, I'm very grateful! Following the very reasonably priced pattern alongside the tutorial and adding my own personal touches, I'm very satisfied and others think what I've made looks great too. I think it's a great service you're doing for us. Thank you!
This is one of the best leathercraft tutorials in all of RU-vid. Thank you for all the work you've put into this! Definitely going to purchase this plan to support your work!
This is a really beautiful satchel bag. I'm thinking about purchasing it. Only thing I wish you added was a handle because the shoulder strap is removable but if one were to remove it they'd have nothing to carry it with. Great tutorial though! I love the craftsmanship, I don't see many woman leather crafters on here and it's really cool to see the amazing stuff you do.
Just bought the pattern Jo. Many thanks for teaching me through lockdown and now having the confidence to make this bag (and for it to come out successfully too!!)
Awesome as always .. if you haven't actually tried making a bag/luggage/backpack it's hard appreciate the skill and labor involved in leatherwork of this quality...
If you add a handle on top and remove the side strap, will it become a briefcase? Or the magnets will not hold? What if we replace them will metal snap buttons? Will that work?
Like many others have said, well done. I recently purchased the pattern and am currently making the satchel. I've found, however, that the pattern for the external pocket is approximately 2" too wide and I've had to modify it. I just thought you might want to know. Thanks again for the beautiful pattern!
As a fairly new leather hobbyist, I have some beginner questions, hope you will answer them, either here or maybe in a special video or on your podcast? How often do you sharpen your head knife? You showed it just before those last skives, and it is (of course) part of the startup, but can you keep it at that? You are probably working on several projects at once so it might be difficult to keep track of. Do you sharpen you rotating knife, or just switch blades? And along the same line; how often/much do you heat the edge creaser? It does of course vary depending on the tools ability to "hold the heat" but again as a newbie just a rough guideline. I don't have a no6 edge beveler, any tips for another way? Just a short skive? It is all those finishing touches that makes the bag look good, and it will be boring to show the answers to all of my questions each time, I know.
Hello there! You made a lovely bag, i cant wait to make one! I have just one question. Is a Single shoulder leather (around 0.7m²) enough for this project? Or should i go for a double shoulder? Thanks!
It's hard to say as it depends on the shoulder and how you can lay all the patterns out. Laying it all out it Adobe Illustrator, then I get around 1.2 m x 0.6 m but like I said, it depends on the hide as there may be marks that you need to work around.
It's a beautiful bag, but If I might suggest that you add a couple of leather flaps inside both the corners of the bag to prevent the ingrees of rain or snow in bad weather.
Beautiful bag. How in the world do you keep your hands so clean when staining the edges? I usually end up with the stain all over my hands and a smudge or two on my face. 😁
Still preparing the tools and will get the pattern as my first big project. Just wondering, how is the bottom part of the inner divider closed? Only by side stitches?
Thank you 🙂 it may be a bit challenging for a complete beginners but I do have a shoulder bag video & patterns which would be a good one to start with and then move onto the satchel 👍ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M6c-_iZXL8Y.html
Hi Jo, when you reviewed the linen and manmade threads in a previous video , you pointed out that linen is "liable to rot if not treated properly." What is your treatment for linen to prevent it rotting. Is there anything more to do than covering the thread with beeswax?
How would you punch the stitch holes for the gussets if you don’t have a diamond awl to use after gluing? I can’t seem to get my chisels to line up without messing up the gusset.
Where can I find a set of loop irons/sticks? where did you get yours? I've only seen a few sets online but they're mostly wooden or some plastic material.
Hey Jo, i have a question about using linen thread. How do you know when you have added enough beeswax on the thread? I made a wallet for my self with linen thread in ecru color but the thread color changed even though ive used beeswax. Do you know what to do? Thanks for your time
Hi Jo, I've recently bought the plans to make this satchel, and have got a couple of Lyveden samples from Metropolitan but can't decide between Burnt Tan or Chestnut... which have you used in the video?!
Terrific tutorial! But... If I could just make one suggestion, NEVER make a laptop bag without the strap on the bag for sliding it over the handle of a roller-board carryon bag. Without that strap, it's useless.
