When I was a kid making hunting & fishing gear was always featured in the outdoor magazines. The first project I made in junior high wood shop was a fish reel for my bow on the lathe. It was rather intimidating using that big wood lathe for the first time but I managed to make my project.

Making your own fishing gear can be very rewarding. Over the years I've tried rod building, fly tying, plug making and of course spinner making.

Great video, over the years I have used Janns Netcraft for a lot of fishing related equipment. I mostly used them for rod building stuff. Making your own rod and then using it to catch fish is very rewarding. Lure making is also rewarding and it hurts a lot less when you lose one.

So much fyn making them. In South Africa, spinner parts are not available. I got French blades, willow blades and Colorado blades on Temu. Great quality, by the way. Also ordered different size brass beads and clevises. I will fish with them soon. Thanks for a great video on how to make them.

Great video!!! I'm going to do some of your tips !!! We had a outdoor club in junior high back in the 70s and our shop teacher taught us to make spinners, been doing it ever since 🎉 We couldn't get "stucki spoon" spinners any more, Dad would buy the entire display!!! So I made our own, still catch a lot with them and big one's 😉 I give some away to friends and I Love it when they tell me about the amount and big fish they caught.😊

Looked like fun. Never tried making lures. Used to do a lot of fishing when I was a kid. But life got busy and it's been some time since I have. Watching you makes me think I just might start back up. No trout in Kansas but sometimes they have a special stocking of them in a local lake. We have other fish to. With my health I don't work so time to fish. Thanks

Someday would love to take you small stream trout fishing here in the Rockies. For many, many years I was a serious fly tier including eventually full dress Atlantic Salmon flies. Alas, after cancer not only do I have trouble fishing (every time out since my transplant I fall in the river or pond), but the damage to my fine motor coordination ended my fly tying. But I've kept it all as my adult son is slowly showing interest in the sport. Spinners are great especially for smallmouth in the spring when they are protecting their beds! Have fun, good friend.

Cool video, but I never learned how to trout fish with lures. I always used salmon eggs, a number 10 barbed hook that would bury entirely in the egg, and a splitshot. Drifting it under side brush normally had my limit within an hour or so. Sometimes though i did note there were days when this technique was not working and the trout were every once in awhile hitting people using lures.. Sometimes I think the trout get together and have a morning talk over what they will all hit on that day. Spent an awful lot of my life wading the trout streams and filling the freezer that way. I stopped b/c the PA fish commission priced themselves out of the masses of fishermen they used to have in our state. Then after imposing a special trout stamp on top of it all they cut back the limit from 5 to 7 while always saying, "This cut back won't change your trout fishing experience." I had a good talk with the local officials asking to explain to me how 5 was the same as 7 - I actually did keep calm and nice about it all. But he just got angry with me and hung up the phone. Our local stores used to be CROWDED with an aisle or two of trout fishing gear and fishermen a couple weeks before the season opened. That business rush was killed by the prices going up and limits on fish. The last season I trout fished there was no special section anymore and I had to have help finding the salmon eggs. So Sad. Anyway, thanks again for showing how this works and I loved the pic of your daughter with the trout!

+357magdad I just love watching this video. The brass spinner blade with the brass beads looks great. Your other video's I just discovered and now a subscriber with the bell notification. I'm getting all the material to make spinning lures but having a hard time finding the 'solid brass' beads (I can get the silver ones). Do you have a suggestion or a link to purchase? I'm in Canada but don't mind buying online. Today I ordered the Jenns Netcraft Tool but and on their site I couldn't find any brass beads. Thanks!

I fish mostly small streams, but I like the french blade and the solid brass beads because they make the lure heavier, so it casts farther and runs deeper.
