Friends: I know people get annoyed when premiers pop up long before the video actually plays, but I'll be traveling tomorrow and you can't set up premiers on RU-vid mobile. So I have to set the premier up today so it will play correctly tomorrow. See you all tomorrow at 2:30!

yeah, would be cool to see the comparison but ... maybe bum a commercial low-angle Jack from one of your mates just to test it out? it doesn't sound like you are jonesing to have one in your tool stash so spending the dosh just for the test is maybe not what you want to be doing. unless of course you REALLY want to know in which case have at it! ps. great stuff as always. rock on Rex!

Beautiful and practical; very nice indeed. Another nice property of aluminium is that you can melt it with a normal blowtorch & butane/propane mix (if you're patient) so you can in effect weld cut pieces back together again. Several times now I've melted some kitchen foil in a little crucible & used a butter knife to smear it into gaps & joints and it comes out remarkably strong as long as you heat the rest of it as you apply & work fast.

Okay, Rex... Great job with this plane!!! I (for one) would probably watch the comparison out of morbid curiosity, whether I "had a dog in the argument" or not about craftsmanship versus actual functionality by design. I like your presentation and energy on these things. I would like to suggest another build, though. JUST food for thought, as I know it's cheaper and more "reachable". What I'm not sure about, is whether it would serve as "functional" for the price and time invested. Take a box-plane, and create an "inlay" for the whole plane, so you can clamp it down into a much larger sole-plate, and still net the sweet results of the low angle, with the stability and control of the larger plane sole and body. You COULD (theoretically of course) add weight to the project (as desired in some planes) by simply drilling holes that can be filled with lead sinkers (fishing tackle) and topped in glue, goop, silicone, or epoxy. I've crafted a "combination" Plane myself with an old Stanley, when I seriously needed the extra sole, so I do know it's possible. A good stable hardwood is essential, and Beech has been my go-to (from advice from old-timers)... BUT I've never personally tried with a simple little box-plane. The hardest part is getting the plane into position so the entire (finished product) sole is dead flat without a lot of fiddling. You don't want to have to put it together (like a kit) and then have to grind away to flatten and true the sole every time, either... or maybe box-planes are cheap enough (in some cases/models) to be sacrificial in the interest of a shop... OR possibly, dedicating ONE box plane (cheap) to this "combination project" could be sufficient IF you left it together permanently. In any case, I thought you might be interested in the idea... for a cheap low-angle alternative. ;o)

That's outrageous! You actually arranged for your gal to NOT want you to buy a tool?!?! Dude! If my wife so much as makes an involuntary facial twitch suggesting she'd let buy a tool, I'm out the door and down the road before she can come to her senses. But thanks for that suggestion. The new tool purchase tactic: bust a gut heroically trying to save the family some dough and then begrudgingly concede to my better half's wisdom by caving in and buying a tool. I've had my eye on a 10 HP bandsaw lumber mill for some time now...

Try using a thicker blade, usually low angle jack planes have very thick blades to take care of the problems a chipbreaker would usually solve (tear out and chatter).

I made a scrub plane to dimension green wood. I used a block plane blade, no chip breaker. I didn't need to worry about the mouth. It is a beast and scallops the wood out quickly. I'm never going to buy a scrub because it works so well. I bet it works better than the cheap stanley in woodworking for humans. How about a build of a scrub as an alternative to the jekyll and hyde for the humans series?

Well, as an old hang glider pilot, aluminum will oxidize when exposed to air, which is like rusting for iron. It is generally anodyzed, which is an electrical process, and that brings it up to 'aircraft grade' aluminum. With the sanding you did, you would have gone through the anodyzing. I do have a couple of low angle jack planes. For one, I got one of those saw tooth type irons, just to experiment. I really like it. Have you ever tried one of those?

The other thing Id love to see, apart from the comparison with a commercial version, is make yourself a high bevel blade to go along with the first one (I see a lot of people recommend a high angle grind to help with tear out, vs the low/standard angle for end grain) and see if you feel the versatility gets better being able to swap blades.

Josh Matt Estlea did a video on this where he went to a total of 62 degrees if I recall it correctly. Got some really crazy shavings off gnarly wood with it. Would be interesting to see Rex’s take on the same subject. I think he would approach it in a way I could copy or understand at least, not that Matt made it complicated-I just click with Rex’s videos better. 6061 can be "machined" with a router. I use a Bosch Colt to machine jigs and other tool accesories using 6061. It's very tough and not too brittle. I do use a "Micro-Fence" for precision. Kind of expensive but was worth the investment.

Would love to see the comparison. Part of the fun for me is building jigs and tools to solve problems quickly/cheaply without buying new tools. That said, I think you should borrow a low angle jack for the comparison video. 200 bucks at Home Depot isn't worth it for something you dont really want. Might make a cool cross over video with some of the other cats on youtube depending on who you borrow from.

@gnarthdarkanen7464

It's worth some dubious note here, that it doesn't take a whole lot of research to find out what sorts of products to look for. Steel scrap in most yards is only a couple bucks per hundred weight (100 lbs/ 40-ish Kg)... SO that's an alternative for FAR cheaper than ordering a channel of any particular alloy online... provided you know a reasonably nearby junkyard/scrap yard. ...Better yet, scratch together a relatively comprehensive list, and make a "distance road trip" worth the drive... As Timbo pointed out, Steel is a tad harder to work, but substitute an angle grinder ($20) for most of the power-tool work, and you can have a much higher durability tool at the end of your build. AND you don't have to sweat the brass vs. not brass fittings to avoid scratches and snarling or warpage. It's also feasible to get a hold of cast-iron... Difficult, yes, but machine-able if you take your time. It's also heavier, which tends to be a net-benefit in planes. (see Stanley, Bailey, and a HUGE variety of other name brands' preference for the stuff)... A note on Corrosion : Might suggest vinegar or phosphoric acid to wash and "force patina" the steel. This creates a coating that protects against most of the elements in a shop or storage that would contribute to rust (highly destructive) and corrosion on its own, and generally doesn't cause undue amounts of havoc with the metal in your finished product. It's not shiny, but while you "futz" about with it, you have the delightful side benefit of developing some interesting patterns of dark on dark... {due note, I'm not a fan of shiny sh*t} JUST in case, that might be your thing. ;o)

@Timbo Dewabem I work in the AL indrusty, 20 years now and have never seen nor heard of t6. The "t" refers to the temper not the aloy like 7075, 6061, 2024.

@gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 4 года назад
@@dondaugherty3138 Perhaps not, but at least some CAN sell at least SOME of their scrap... You can also DO THE RESEARCH and go find parts and salvage-worthy metals in junkyards, where decent steel is often located in dubious things like leaf-springs... None of this presents as "less work" but makes the elbow grease and time invested take up the place of money... PROVIDED you bother to find out what to look for. Furnaces, especially old steam furnaces for big old buildings with radiator heating, often have a wide variety of shapes and sizes of cast-iron parts, for instance... Bed-rails are MAGNIFICENT grade steel, thin, and already shaped to a nice 90 degree angle. Easily hardened at home, and durable as hell in their original condition. Ball bats, VW and Porsche engines, and a variety of aluminum alternatives are often high in magnesium, if that's your preference too... OR you can scour the web and Scroogle up locations for aircraft junk and graveyards, where the industries often tap old planes as resources for difficult to machine utensils and utilities... As I posted, there's no sense in wasting a long road-trip over one piece of channel about 18 inches long... Make a list, and go ahead and add in there those hydraulic cylinders you've dreamed of turning into a power ramp on the porch, or a bike lift on the back of the truck... Why not??? Talk to anyone involved in metallurgy, from university professors to fabricators, smiths, welders, and even any local artists who might have a habit of dipping into dumpsters from time to time. It could save you aggravation... or even the need to get out on the road around dawn in the first place. ;o)

If you buy the Stanley #62, shop around, because the prices are all over the place. Home Depot seems to have the best price now. I've been reading reviews, and it seems that they've had quite a few issues, in recent years, with the casting quality and QC being sub par. I read good things about the Taytools (Taylor Toolworks) version. I haven't found many reviews, though. I'd love to see a side by side comparison of the Stanley and the Taytools #62s. I realize that would be cost prohibitive for you, though.

You work hard for the money you spend on those tools, though. I hate to see you waste it. I understand the whole limited funds thing all too well. I was a paramedic who married a teacher. We've always joked that we took a vow of poverty. Then, after I was cut out of an overturned ambulance, I had to retire on a disability pension. My wife continued to be a stay at home mom until our youngest started kindergarten. Those were some lean years. Raising 4 kids on a pension. Even with her back to work, my tool budget barely exists.

When I worked on single seat aerobatic aircraft, made with lots of wood and composite parts, we mixed WEST epoxy on aluminum because it popped right off after it cured, ready to be used again. If I have to use epoxy, it is never the 5 Minute variety. Another of my hobbies is RC modeling. I've learned that 5 minute ages very poorly in that it gets rubbery and the bond fails after several years. I have not observed 15 minute and slower epoxies doing that.

A no 62 low angle bevel up plane (Stanley old and new, Lie Nielsen, Veritas) is a specialty plane and is good for what it was made for (end grain). It is just a giant low angle block plane. However, while it is capable (moderately) of doing general planing it was never made for general work and cannot compete with a standard bevel down bench plane because it is missing a chip breaker. No other plane feature can compete with a chip breaker when it comes to avoiding or minimizing tear out. While a tight mouth can help, it is nowhere near as important as a chip breaker. While Lie Nielsen and Veritas planes are VERY good and built to very tight tolerances, they have a hard time competing (price wise) with quality made standard bevel down older Stanley bench planes. They have a strong incentive to advertise low angle bevel up planes as the best all around plane because a new and better made Lie Nielsen or Veritas low angle bevel up plane does not cost too much more than an older Stanley No 62 (and especially no 64). The orignial no 62 was not produced in great numbers because it was never meant or advertised to be anything but a specialty plane for end grain such as butcher blocks. In addition, many of the older no. 62's a broken because of weakness at the mouth. Due to the low numbers, the cost of an original 62 is quite high which makes it easier veritas and lie nielsen to tout buying a new plane. While nice, there nothing particularly special about these planes other than a fad.

Rex, Don't buy the plane, I would suggest as others have to get one from a friend to test and see how they stand up together and you can offer something to the said friend to help you test the low angle and share a beer over the experience. Keep up the great work and your home made one is really inspiring to see. I love to see home made things that are built to last and not just buy and toss out. God bless you and keep up the great videos. I know some guys you might like to get in touch with. the crew are Pask makes (RU-vidr), Samari Carpenter (another RU-vidr) and a few others I hooked up a few years back and they might be up for this challenge. I too love the blending of materials in a build as it makes it look so next level.

Rex, Another great video! the design looks great and I'll bet could be easily adapted to regular higher angle planes as well. In fact, since I don't have any planes I intend to build them using this plan as the basis! Thanks for the inspiration! Unfortunately, plan purchase will have to wait for payday. :(

I will research the cost of hard anodized aluminum channel. It will not stain wood and perhaps look for a much more resiliant alloy as well. Even the ordinance grade aluminum alloys can be easily worked with wood working tools. A stiffer harder aluminum alloy which has been hard anodized would offer a more durable tool. I too would like to see a comparison with the Stanley Low Angle Jack Plane.

I have an idea of using a block of wood and a "spoon" carving tool to make a "roundover plane" - a plane for cutting the sharp corners off of wood in a round shape instead of a standard 45 chamfer. My questions: 1) Is it worth the time and effort, or should I just improve my proficiency with rasps, files,sandpaper, etc? 2) Is oak a good choice for a plane body (my free options are Oak, pine, chestnut, and maybe pecan) because these are trees which do or used to grow on my property.

Well, I finally went ahead and supported you on patreon. I love your content. Your style of making videos is amazing. I'd like a video about the Stanley but frankly I probably would like you talking about paint drying... :D

Imrahil He should do it. He should make a video entirely about paint drying and grass growing. I think its the voice. Hes got this morgan freeman inner spirit going for him that seems to just work. Combined with him showing his mistakes and the whole process I’m not afraid to admit a slight mancrush. My wife isn’t jealous so its not that serious yet but... this fictional attachment relationship has potential.

I had a damaged iron for my low angle jack plane, so I made it a scrub plane. First tests were great. What do you think?
@raulpena3472

Since the angle of the bevel up blade is 35 degrees (15 degrees for the bed and 30 degrees for the angle of the blade bevel) have you ever considered making a plane with a 30 degree bed and using a bevel down blade. That would give you an even lower blade angle than a 15 degree bed angle with a 30 degree bevel on the blade.

Rex, I liked this video a lot, in fact I like most all of your videos. Keep them coming please. Thank you. Also, I an very curious to see how the cheap plane compares. Maybe it will be good enough to purchase without going through the effort of making one. Thanks again.

I think if you are going to do such a test I would be interested in seeing your plane plus bought iron as another comparison, assuming your plane performs diferantly

I wonder if you were to do one of those that was to be a designated shooting plane if you would need all 3 sides of the Ali channel. Probably just get away with a right angle piece.

Thinking about it more though the extra side is important to hold the fixings for the levering action. 🤔

Yes, I would be very interested in a comparison video. I also wonder if you could make another one out of stainless steel channel? Just saying. I do know it would be more work, but wouldn't it be sweet?

Im planning on making a jack plane in a similar style, i think ill try and find some steel channel, instead of aluminium, due to the marks it makes on the wood though.
@RexKrueger

My thought was that aluminum was easy to work for the average woodworker, but it's a bit soft. Maybe brass next time.

Axminster is probably the “cheapest” next option. At least it was for me. I got mine for the low low price of $145 on sale. Plus shipping ($10ish?). Not having any idea what I was going to get, I was surprised. it arrived with a good 25/30 dual bevel, flat and square (not curved at all), and honestly I simply polished it with my honing paper before using it. After slight fiddling my first shaving was silk. Its amazing but honestly I wish there was a cheaper option I felt was viable. I didnt have the money to buy a cheap plane and have it not work. Going too cheap was... too risky. Id love to see what you do with the stanley. You making this was fun to watch. How viable would .25in steel be in place of the aluminum if I had a bit of scrap laying around? (I’ve not worked steel before. Now that Ive typed that out loud it sounds dumb...but still. How hard could it really be?)

i know you have done hand plane shootouts and found one for wood working for humans, have you ever considered the buck brand planes, i got one and from my 0 experience in use, i was able to with your instructions easily use there block plane to finish normal cuts but ive been using it to flat my maple log cut to make a mallet and impressively well its gone. and im using it out of the box, sharpening and flat materials are still on the way,
