O-rings are insignificant little things - but not if you need one to fix your boat! O-ring splicing kits are cheap and if you have one on board you can make a perfectly sized o-ring in minutes. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE ➜ bit.ly/SBRU-vid⛵
This video shows me making two o-rings to fix a leaking faucet on our small sailing boat.
This O-Ring splicing kit is made of Black Buna-N, has a durometer of 70A, and includes 9 pieces of o-ring cord in metric cross sections, 1 meter of cord per piece. The cord has a Round cross-section and can be used across a wide temperature range from -67 degrees F (-55 degrees C) to 257 degrees F (125 degrees C). The splicing kit comes in a plastic box with lid card, instructions, cord stock, splicing jig, cutting tool, and adhesive.
The kit includes the following cord sizes: 1 Meter of 1.5mm, 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 3.5mm, 4mm, 5mm, 5.7mm, 8.4mm O-Ring Cord Stock.
Buna-nitrile can have high tensile strength, as well as abrasion, tear, and compression set resistance. It is compatible for use with petroleum, hexafluoroacetone (HFA), hexafluoro-2-butyne (HFB) and hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) fluids, vegetable oil, alcohol, acids, and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Buna-nitrile is vulnerable to acetone, ethers, esters, ozone, sunlight and weathering, and should not be used in ozone-generating electric motors, welding equipment, or in applications with exposure to UV light.

Some obvious tools on a sailing boat for me... Pop Rivet Gun and a stock of different size pop rivets, butane powered soldering iron with a hot knife tip - electrical work and rope cutting/sealing jobs, wire crimps and furrels for emergency rigging jobs, good quality cordless hand drill with backup rechargeable batteries, self amalgamating/butyl tape for sealing wires and plumbing... just a few there. Great channel guys, congrats on your wedding, fair winds....

Hi. What common uses do you find for the rivets? I've bought my first cabin boat and found two rivet guns and several bags of rivets onboard, but no evidence that anything has been rivetted!

Just bought a speedystich sewing awl that is compact and easy to use - under £15. It has been worth it's weight fixing the loose stitching all over the boat. Also a gas powered soldering iron for under £40 with many accessories including a hot blade attachment that will cut through and seal polyester and polypropylene lines.

I saw your video about a year or two ago. I never knew that there was such a kit out there. And you are not kidding that a simple o-ring could stop you from getting back to the dock safely. I went on eBay and thought it was a little too pricey to justify buying one. Last weekend the company that I was looking at on eBay sent me an offer through my email. They offered to cut the price in half and still give me free shipping. I jumped on that immediately and it arrived today. What's even more amazing it came one day early then the scheduled delivery date I was given. It was hard to believe right now during Christmas that you would get a package early but I did. Since ordering it I have thought of several different uses for it. I have two floor jacks that are leaking and it's been difficult to find the right o-ring to fix both of them. So now tomorrow I will pop over to my garage and fix my jacks with the kit that you inspired me to buy. Love your contact I always make sure to leave you a thumbs up after watching your videos. Hope you and your family have a happy holiday. Look forward to watching more

on my boat I always kept, -Socket Set -Pry Bar -Vice Grips -Hose Clamps -Screw drivers *various sizes* both phillips and Flat.. -2 cans of starting fluid (which is Ether) -Water Safe Matches -small propane torch, solder & flux (for long journeys) -Spare rubber garden hose.. -plyers (various sizes) -a small box of 5 colors of Silicon Jacket 14 or 12ga wire.. -Wire connectors and crimper / strippers -Shrink Tubing -electrical tape -Spray on Electrical Tape (very handy when you can't wrap with roll or need to be sure its water tight) -4ga or heavier 16-20ft long jumper cables...(get 00 gauge if you can afford / find them) To jump another boat and get them going or incase I need a jump.. Its a costly purchase, but pay for themselves first time you need them.. -Roll of Alum Tape -Roll of Heavy Extra Wide Alum Foil (works for heat shielding or can make a solar over if stranded, or a giant reflector to signal other ships if radio is down. -1 can of Florescent Orange Paint. (for emergency use to signal others) -Utility knife with extra blades, or the type that snap off. Never know when you may need something super sharp. -Bacardi 151 (has many uses.. remove sticky residues, Sterilize tools, clean parts, make fire, mix with questionable water to make it safer to drink. Get drunk! lots of uses there) ALSO, I always used to keep a few spare parts for my engines (I had twin Merc I/O's ) which are just small block chevys. -4 Spark Plugs -4 Spark plug wires And -1 Extra belt just cuz if it breaks you're down.. And thats it from the top of my head. It all sounds like a lot, but most of its cheap, and a one time purchase.. It doesn't really take up much room and in the event you need something, and didn't brink it along, you'll regret it later.. Remember, Most LOCAL boat towing bills usually START at $800 and go up from there... B.O.A.T. --- BUST OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND!!!

These variable o-ring kits are useful when dealing with unexpected repairs in the field. But they only work if you have all the different diameters of rubber cord. I wonder if it would be possible to make a kit with only one size of rubber cord: a small diameter hollow tube. The kit would include a syringe for pumping some kind of paste into the tube. So the tube would first be cut to length, then one end would be sealed with adhesive. Then the paste would be injected into the other end, until the tube has reached the correct diameter. Then somehow the second end would be sealed. That wouldn’t make a perfect o-ring, but it would probably hold for a couple of weeks as a temporary measure. One diameter of tube would handle several diameters of o-ring, and any circumference. If it worked.

I like this - it might seems easier to carry a bunch of spare rings but I have run out before, I've come across O rings I didn't think I had on board and, as a bonus, if someone else needs one - you can probably help them out. Could you put a link to your kit in the description / give the specs on the thicknesses included in the kit? Cheers.
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 7 лет назад
Hi there, thank you for your comment. :-) Yes, the pre-made o-ring kits are cheap too but if you want to cover all the o-rings on board it would be pretty complicated. You'd have to do a kind of inventory of every o-ring, in every piece of kit, and then find somewhere to store them (and then find them again when you need one). I prefer to 'wing it' and make them as I need them. As you say, you can also make one for a neighbour and earn yourself a beer! I've updated the description with the extra information about the kind of kit we have on board. Cheers and fair winds! Chris (& Rossella) 👍

@SailingBritaly

That's a difficult question to answer actually, we're pretty nomadic: We're on the boat now (Liguria) but we spend time in Modena and sunny Blackpool (Lancashire) which is my home town. On top of that, my job takes me all over the world (offshore), so it's all a bit of a mess! Are you guys living on board at the moment? Cheers, Chris
@BetterthanitwasNetsailing
@BetterthanitwasNetsailing 7 лет назад
Yes we are. We've been living 'house -free' for 18 months. We are having a "launch launch lunch' on March 31 to mark our official leaving date . Although there is a ton of stuff to complete we will be heading off on the first weather window after that date. Still don't know where we are going though....
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 7 лет назад
Good on you guys - we only get one life! If you wait until 'everything's ready' you would never leave, so well done for setting a date. As for the destination, not having firm plans is the best way to cruise anyway, so you'll be getting off to the perfect start. :-) Good luck with your preparations! 👍

I'm a bit concerned about the joint, what kind of c.a. do you use? O-rings must be able to be compressed, Some c.a.'s crack under pressure. Is it still working? Just subscribed, hope you don't get sick of my questions, I'll try to keep them to a minimum, thanks.

Hi Lee, welcome aboard as a new subscriber and please feel free to fire away with as many questions as you like.... we are not experts in anything but will happily answer to the best of our abilities! 🙂 The cyanoacrylate we used came with the o-ring kit. I believe that the thickness of the glue is so miniscule (probably a couple of microns wide) that there is no problem with cracking, despite the compression that must take place in order for an o-ring to function. Hi John, top of my head: fresh water faucets, fresh water tank refill cap seal, diesel refill cap seal, inboard engine, outboard engine. @802Garage

Only a few seconds. Hold firm for 5-10 and do a light pull test. If it pulls apart, press back together. If it dries and there is a tiny gap, you can add just a bit more glue, but the rubber face should be mostly touching.

@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly Год назад
Yes but you'd need 10 different kits to cover all the size options available from this single cut to size kit - and even then, you might be a small percentage of size out from the one you need, which is no good for an o-ring. We didn't have the room to store 10 o-ring kits on this boat, so this DIY version was very handy.

Or just have an actual oring kit. You can get them here at least with hundreds of different types and sizes all ready to use. Far easier if you ask me
@SailingBritaly
@SailingBritaly 6 лет назад
Of course you can buy an 'actual' o-ring kit. However, despite those kits having several hundred o-rings in them (typically 20 o-rings x 30 different sizes), having 20 o-rings that are 'nearly the right size' is utterly useless. With the o-ring splicing kit we have we can make o-rings with 18000 different size combinations, with diameters from 1.5 mm (tiny o-rings) up to 8.4 mm (extremely large o-rings). If someone wants to dedicate an entire locker of storage space on their boat to storing pre-made o-ring kits, and spend ages searching through boxes to see if they can find one of the correct size when they need one (hoping that the correct size is in one of their kits) then that's up to them... I prefer to open my one small box, make an o-ring in about 2 minutes and then get on with the rest of my day. Fair winds, Chris
