I must admit, I thought I would sound rubbish, but I was astounded how good that sounded. Lol. Really great job. Thanks for sharing. You made me smile today 😆
My God! God bless you my bhother. I love the sound of Duduk but, i don´t have money to buy. I´m brasilian. I'll try to do, thank you brother and congratulations.
Many thanks for the detailed plans - that'll be very helpful. I actually have a traditional duduk, but I can't get replacement reeds without paying about as much as a whole new instrument. I've just checked the measurements, and I should be able to adapt this polypipe reed to fit (inside) my duduk. Problem solved!
SO MANY THANKS! For years I've searched for measurements and instructions on how to make a duduk. Thanks for sharing! As with many things in life, player is the most important aspect on getting a good result, and you're an incredible player that makes it look too easy!
I think you are a magician. You make it looks so easy. I've tried and tried to make the rred, and cant get a sound out of it. And mine looks so misshapen despite my best efforts. This tells me how good you actually are! And what great playing!
thank you Linsey! I have made my own experiments after finding the original idea video, but now I am inspired to try again.. you did add some things.. I then tried to make reeds for duduks I have from georgia and armenia, but didnt quite get them good enough, though they where playable.. ma by with more hammering experiments I could get them better.. have also tried to make the original reed version, a georgian builder once showed me the whole process.. fascinating! but they are v e r y tricky to get them working well..
Here's a little tip to save you some irritation: attach that anvil to a piece of plywood with some bolts (countersunk type, pointing upward so the underside is smooth). To the underside of the plywood, attach a piece of ordinary 2x lumber so it makes a "T" in cross section. When you want to use the anvil, tighten the lower 2x piece in the vise so it doesn't squirm around the bench.
OMG I think this is my dreamed instrument🤤😍😍😍😍😍 Thanks a lot for sharing this video and the instrument that makes our inner voices be heard🤤🤤🤤🤤🙌🖤 Greetings from Costa Rica
Duduk in the language I just made up means "this was a great youtube video, very informative", so this really ended up working out as a great coincidence
ThankU I love the dound. Yani's Orchestra has a Musician who plays a 3000 year old Duduk. I'm looking at purchasing my daughter an Armenian professional Duduk. She plays the Flute x 18 years
Hello, very nice and amazing sound, innovative and genius, when you listen to the the real sound of authentic Armenian duduk made out of aged Apricot and made by experienced master, in real nothing can imitate the sound of real duduk. Greetings from heart of Armenia, sound was closed enough !
This is incredible, and it sounds beautiful! I'm wanting to make one of my own, but it's pretty difficult to find poly pipe in these dimensions here in the States, thanks to us still rejecting the metric system *facepalm* How would you recommend going about experimenting with hole placement and dimensions to find the right spots? The closest thing I can get my hands on to 12mm ID pipe will be 1/2 inch which is just a little too big, do you think I could work with that and these hole placements and still get somewhere close to decent intonation?
if youre still wondering, start with smaller holes, try about 4 mm or whatever is less than 7 but not absurdly small, then once the instrument is finished, try the low note and make sure its in tune, then then first hole, make that in tune, then the next and so on, getting each hole in tune before starting the next, to pick where to make a hole, try and scale it up with the tube
I read up on this a bit and the radius/diameter _do_ actually affect the pitch somewhat in real life: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/End_correction Since the frequency is determined from the effective length basically. For a closed pipe: DeltaL == 0.6 * r = 0.3 * D where DeltaL is the extra length added on from the physical length of the pipe. So in short for a wider tube you need to slightly shorten the distances by some calculable amount I suppose, and vice versa for a narrower one.
Heard you on the melb radio yesterday and very much enjoyed it. Did realise you were in Tanzes Fancy a very inspirational group 4 me. This video is excellent many thanks
thanks, I will try again ... already the past years I had purchased some black tube (curved though) and I tried to do it, with little success ... now I could try again, just in these days I tried to make the mouth thinner, and a trumpet-like sound comes out ... but not as beautiful and melodious as yours ... but I guess it is very much a question of ability to play instruments ... however I am going to buy one from Armenia with ebay. ..
Brilliant video thank you! Duduk is one of my favourite instruments, i’m definitely giving this a go. Lovely playing too! Do you do any remote session work?! :)
Wow, Lindsey, that's some interesting duduk!! Thanks! As I don't have the tools to make one, would it be possible to ship one to me? Awesome jobs you do! And your playing is fab! 👍🎶
Very Nice! Living in the US the “normal” pipe we get here is .5 ID and .7 OD. Would you have a method to convert the measurements? They are pretty close. Thanks
I don't have a method for conversion, but if the dimensions of the pipe are close then use my measurements and then adjust them on the 2nd attempt. ie: if the note is too sharp move the hole further down the tube, if it's too flat move it further up the tube
The reed pipe is ordinary 1/2" drip irrigation pipe; I don't know what the body pipe is. It looks like a double layer, with a translucent pipe inside the black one. We've got PEX in the US, so maybe that's all it is.
Nice sound , easy to do as explained in your video. I have been hitting the pipe to make the reed but I can not flat it enough. I have used a press to try an flat it, I even applied heat to it and can not make it flat so no sound comes out of it. Do you have any tip you can give to address this?
Thanks a lot for the tutorial. I bought all parts from Bunnings, but have been trying to make the reed for a couple of weeks now, with no luck :( no matter how I hammer, it will not produce sound. Any chance of another tutorial on what to do if the reed does not produce sound? cheers
Nice, but you could give us the length of the tube without the bit that makes the sound. I mean the length and locations of the holes in millimeters from top to bottom and also the back hole. And finally, the type of tube you used to make the playing piece I hope you answer and thank you
Is polypipe the same as pex in the us? I tried this with pex scraps because I wanted to use the reed to make a hichikiri, but no dice. Even if I filed it or shaped it, no sound.
Hi, I live in germany and want to do make a duduk. unfortunatly, I didnt find a shop, selling this materials, like that pex pipe. But I found one, what sell normal pvc pipes with 12mm ID and 16mm OD. Can I use any plastic pipe or does it need to be the original like in the video? I have issues finding a pipe, I can hammer to make the reed. What kind of material or what kind of pipe do I need. Iam not quite familiar with the term "garden irrigation" pipe, so I dont know, how to explain it to the hardware store in german language. Can you help me out please? I really want to have my own, selfmade duduk.
Hi. The kind of plastic hose needed is made from polyethylene, which is strong but flexible. PVC would break very easily and won't work at least for the reed, probably it will for the body. Rubber hoses neither are suitable as they wouldn't retain the reed shape. That's the brilliant idea of this duduk, using poly-pipe for the reed.
Danke.
Anyone swedish who knows what kind of pipe the reed pipe would match? Have tried some options but so far everything is not formable enough or too rigid and cracks (even with heat)
I followed the instructions. So, it actually works, but the sound is more like a crying duck rather than duduk :/ I still use it quite often because it's easier to practice on it since it requires much less air

Is ‘polypipe’ the brand? I tried to look a translation for it up so I can know what to look for in the Netherlands, but all I got was a company.
maybe you need to flatten it even more. I remember doing this but with drinking straws. you had to flatten them with your teeth a lot of time to get them to sound. this is basically the same but with a giant straw, so I imagine it will take more time to flatten the reed
