You will learn to make screen printing frames from repurposed canvas frames which are easily found at you local thrift stores.
Equipment:
110 mesh from Amazon: amzn.to/38FEZUS
Drawer / Cabinet Liner: amzn.to/34HXkPS
Staple Gun: amzn.to/2KVa6TQ
Staples: amzn.to/3rrE2Ie
Assortment of clamps (you can find at most hardware stores, but I'll post a couple examples here): amzn.to/2M7e7Fz or amzn.to/3hkSrRY
Scrap wood: If you don't have scrap wood around, find a wood pallet to tear apart.
Canvas Frames: Find these at your local flea market or thrift store. I find that the glued variety work better than the stapled variety.
*If you don't already have amazon prime for free two day shipping on the items listed above try a free 30 day trial: amzn.to/2KtnEX8

Stumbled across this video and this is just genius! Even for painters stretching canvas, the grippy mat wrapped around wood trick is super helpful. Traditionally painters would use canvas pliers which only tension one spot at a time, it can be so frustrating trying to get the whole canvas smooth and tight.

I've been cutting 1x2's but have also thought about picture frames as well, but the big deal I got from your video was how you tensioned the screen with the blocks of wood wrapped in No Slip and clamped together. I've been hand tensioning to okay results, had been thinking of hanging a weight with it clamped to the excess screen but your way seem more likely. Thx.

Glad I found this video! Used a similar method-rolled the excess screen in a 1x2 to use as a tensioner. I have some SLIGHT waves in my mesh, but not major. Will that be ok when it comes to the emulsion?

Any tips on helping the screen not rip with the staples? Got the screen all put together and with a little pressure it starts to rip at the staple site and loosens the screen. Went ahead and coated it with emulsion Anyway. I’m gonna do a test print to see how it works.

Can I use old canvas frames that have horizontal cross bars?
@MemesyShirts
@MemesyShirts 3 года назад
I've seen them used once before. It all depends on the size of the frame and what size your print is. The instance that I saw, the user treated each half of the frame as two separate one color screens. Personally I wouldn't recommended it unless your print is small (for instance you're printing on baby t-shirts or bibs).

how do you keep the mesh tight enough so you don’t get any ripples? or can you explain a way to prevent ripples?
@terry2346
@terry2346 3 года назад
There is a method that I use for stretching canvas on frames that works very well! You start in the middle of the frame by stapling one side and then directly across from it pull the canvas and staple. At this point ONLY staple 2 staples 1 inch apart. Go to the opposite and stretch and then staple 2 staples one inch apart. Then do the same procedure with the other sides of the square, again only stapling 2 staples 1 inch apart. You should now have 2 staples on each middle of the square. And it should be stretched tight in the 4 directions. Then going clockwise around the perimeter stretch and staple 2 staples on side A then 2 staples on side B then 2 staples on side C and then 2 staples on side D. Just continue doing this in a clockwise manner stretching as you go and stapling. When you get to the end of the sides the canvas should be wrinkle free and taut. Hard to explain but once you do one you will see it is easy and very effective. Just try to have uniform stretching as you proceed around the sides. When you have reached the end going clockwise then do the same sequence but going counter clockwise. Hope this is not too confusing and helps!
