Thanks for posting this idea. Ignore the whiners. If they're in such a rush, they can click forward! I'm just looking into DIY examples of these b/c yeah, the retail ones are really $$$$$. Do you find this is enough of an improvement over the the fly zapper mod to warrant the extra money for the ion generator? I wonder if the parts for it couldn't be had from a supplier like Digi-Key or even junk bashed out of old electronics to save money? I saw the fella from the Southern Scale Modelling make one just out of a restaurant squeeze bottle. I think the plastic of the bottle was creating the static charge from shaking the grass inside it. It had the tapered tip on it so could make for very precise placement of grass if needed. It made me think a combo of his and yours might be an interesting unit. Put aluminum window screen mesh inside the squeeze bottle. Glue the ion unit to the outside of the bottle. Run the one wire inside to the screen and the other to the work piece. This could give extra charge to the grass and let you squeeze the bottle to puff out the grass in a more controlled fashion. Just thinking out loud. :)
Hi Thank you for your kind words. Very much appreciated. Let me see if I can find the information for the module I purchased . I found that the Bug zapper was a lower voltage than the aftermarket module , but I think it will also work . The "combo" Idea i think is a great idea. Also FYI, ( lesson Learned in Hindsight , I found that When I took the unit close to my LED street lighting , somhow the high voltage static was damaging some of my LED street lights on the layout which were very close to the unit. @@anthonyshobbycorner Thanks Anthony. I found a unit like the one you have on Amazon. They all look like they are mostly potted in epoxy, so unlikely to be able to reverse engineer. :) Not to expensive though, so probably worth just purchasing. I saw some other videos that put the positive wire on metal mesh or a metal plate at the back of the grass container, not on the front screen the grass shakes out of. Apparently this works better as the charge doesn't interfere with the grass going out the screen and there's less risk of getting a zap as the exposed screen isn't charged. Good to know about the LED lights being affected. Probably could be bad for other electronics as well. Bert

I see you commented you used a 6000V one, I can only get 6000V ones here where I live, would you say it’s better than the cheap ones you buy on Ali express that don’t even use Ionic generators? And would you say the 6kv one was not usable at all?
Hi, Great video! I bought the same materials and wired it exactly like you did. I had a question about it though. Does yours give you a minor shock when you turn it on? Mine does. Also, when I tested it for current, I put the negative charge lead close to the screen that I soldered the red wire to and there is an arc of about 1/4 inch. The fact that it shocks me when I turn it on and has such a big arc concerns me if this is actually safe and if I built it correctly. I don't have any static grass to really test it with yet but I'd like your feedback on these two things. I hope to hear from you, Thanks so much
Me too. I have no wiring skills nor soldering know-how so I would very much like to know what and how to solder inside a tight tube such as a flashlight case. I have the same type of flashlight that I'd like to use so any help would be appreciated.
oh wow , that's too bad . they were very cheap plastic flashlights , that were ideal for stuff like this . Are there other plastic flashlights that might do the trick ? basically , you need one that uses D battery cells ( as that gives you enough room to house the HV module . And really , any plastic flashlight ( with D Cells ) will do the trick . The area which holds the bulb and reflector does not have to be big or have a large capacity .. you only need very little space to hold the static grass in the chamber ..

@@anthonyshobbycorner yep. I already ordered one of these generator things.. but it comes from China so it will take a month ot arrive . And it´s insane cheap jaja Would you believe I tried to use the statc from my 34 " CRT tv to apply static grass¿¿ that thing is massive and makes very stron electrostatic but it´s not practical jejeje Hope my dioramas get much better since Im starting to love this andand I don't rule out the idea of making some money from this yes my English sucks
