One fun thing to do that is similar to this is to find a Blues track in the key of D. They are all over RU-vid and usually 12 or 16 bars at various speeds. Then you can essentially improvise freely on your D whistle. This will help give you an intuitive sense for harmony. It is a total departure from Traditional Irish music (so apologies there) but it can be fun to try out.

Thank you so much for being brave and doing this video, I learned so much from your process and experiences, and from reading all the comments down below. I had years of music as a child but each time someone tried to explain music theory it felt like my brain was exploding. I just don't think that way. I wonder if other people can relate to this: I remember when learning a piece of music I secretly would get someone to play the piece for me. Then I would play the notes I saw on the sheet music and then use the timing and everything else I had heard the person play. I do understand time signatures, half notes and quarter notes and the lot but slogging through reading them? Ugh. When I finally took a class on playing by ear it was like I had at last found the key to music for me- it made me so happy. And as an added plus, I can now remember what I have learned as opposed to always having to use the sheet music as a crutch. Music theory for kinetic learners, that is that a thing? I read that you have had some new thoughts on music theory and I hope you will consider doing a second updated video on these and how to create harmonies on the fly for people who do not come to music theory easily by the traditional methods of teaching it. The way you explain seems much more in tune with the way I learn and I would really appreciate it.

You have an amazing voice too! An easy harmony "trick" is to play two notes higher than your melody note in the key you are in . For example if the melody note is D for your harmony note play F# (in a D whistle) the reason you play F# instead of F natural is that if you are playing in the key of D the note contained in that key is F# instead of F natural. In classical music we count the distance between two notes (called an interval) with how many consecutive letters you need to create the interval (for example here D,E, F# is three letters in a row) so this practical description "two notes higher" is called an interval of a Third (3rd) , and because you keep following the melody with this distance we call this "parallel thirds" because the two resulting melodies move in parallel to one another keeping a distance of a third (which is two notes distance in reality but we count the first letter as well when we reckon the intervals) A neat trick is to play the same notes one octave lower, bringing them below the main melody (this distance/interval is called a 6th and it is the "inversion" of the third). Lastly, you can play a third lower than your melody or a sixth higher, but even though that makes good harmony the new melody is going to be stronger than the original melody, making us think that the original melody is the actual harmony and the harmony is the original melody. Sorry for the long comment. Hope this is useful. I teach harmony and counterpoint (classical polyphony) and you can see an example of my composition using these here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Nldakys86MY.html

If you have different keyed pennywhistles, like a generation, you can use the same fingerings but with a different whistle, for instance, you could overplay a c flute over an f flute, just use the same fingerings and not have to worry about transposing.

Well, I decided to learn tin whistle during lockdown, and subscribed to your channel yesterday. Today I’m searching for tips on harmony and get bogged down with people writing about fugues and Bach, horizontal and vertical harmony and counterpoint. Very confusing for me! Then, what pops up in my RU-vid feed? Exactly what I needed in a way I can easily understand! Thank you so much!

While I encourage this foray into music theory, and am absolutely willing to share the little that I know (3 years of formal college level classes)... Oof! I sincerely hope you continue your venture into descant lines and simple harmonies, but this is a VERY elementary and quite frankly a round about way of writing a harmony line. Understanding that most Celtic and anglo music sticks to the 1 4 5 chord family, and subsequently how to build those chords would help greatly in cobbling something together that is both melodic, and in harmony with the main melody. Grab your guitar playing friend and ask them to help out (I promise a good time and fellowship).

My whole channel is aimed at beginners, who are just starting out in their musical journey. This is an easy to understand way of trying something out, encouraging beginners to try things they can achieve 😊

Since I have no one that I know playing tin whistle I am very happy with this video. Because I always struggled with harmonizing I love the circle of fifths method. Only problem is that my tin whistle (or me) can't reach the third octave (or C# and C in second octave for that matter) which is required for foggy dew (song I wanna harmonize) when put into circle of fifths. So that's gonna require some practicing

Wow, you did a fantastic job on simplifying and demystifying harmony and the expiation on the beat. I've been looking for this for soooo long and gets me motivated to play a lot more. But I am a bit confused I would have thought that the beat would have been on the first note in those groups of notes. As i understand it if you set a metronome this is where the clicks would line up, would greatly appreciate it if you or any one in the chat could clarify this a bit more. Then we all fall in to the abyss of music theory :( :( Anyway this is a fantastic video and thank you so much.
@CutiepieTinWhistle
@CutiepieTinWhistle 4 года назад
It doesn't really matter which note you use as the 'beat' note, as long as it's on the beat, and then every beat from there in. Some songs will start on the beat, some after the beat, some before. You could even double the pace of the metronome (and still play at the same speed) but use those additional beats in-between to give you an indicator of where you could add additional harmony notes :) Just play around! Wherever you feel the natural beat/rhythm is on the tune you're playing, go for that spot!

I am so happy you put this one out. I've been wondering about this since you announced the Sea Shanty project. Though this does bring up a question: I already have a Low D but am thinking of buying a second whistle, what would be a good key to pair with the low D for harmony purposes? Or even just what is a good key for a second whistle in general?
@CutiepieTinWhistle
@CutiepieTinWhistle 4 года назад
You don't really need a different key of whistle to create a harmony, as it's more about the notes you choose to play than the key of whistle. You can make harmonies using the same whistle, or whistles in different keys. It's the notes you choose to play on those whistles that are important :) So go for a key you like the sound of!
@P_Ezi
@P_Ezi 4 года назад
As our host said, you don't really need another key. BUT, if you had a second whistle in A, then you could use the same fingering on the second whistle to play perfect 5th harmony to your melody on the D. Similarly, if you had a second whistle in G, then you could play the melody on the G and use the same fingering on the low D for simple harmony. Of course, there are a million other things that can be done, but these would be simple "cheats" fitting with the tone and stated purpose of this video.

This is a really good video explaining basic harmony, BUT PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BE SPARING ON THE CIRCLE OF FIFTHS TECHNIQUE. Parallel fifths (aka what is created in this technique) is not considered good harmony in traditional harmony.
@Cludnugget
@Cludnugget 4 года назад
Ewww... parallel fifths... 😟 Youre better off not using fourths or fifths consecutively. If you're harmonising on a diatonic instrument (such as whistle) the simplest way to harmonise is using thirds or sixths. All you need to do for this is start two holes up or down and follow the melody line effectively from a different position on the whistle. As long as the instrument is in the same key you don't need to worry about accidentals unless you're going for some kind of chromatic effect.
