Most modern ham rigs have built-in sound cards for easy access to digital modes. However, there are a few on the market that don’t have them, and more than a few older rigs on the after market that don’t. If you want to work digital modes, you’ll need an external sound card, and the best (IMHO) is the SignaLink by TigerTronics.
This video introduces what you need to know to pick your SignaLink, and what you need to do before you can make it work with your system.

Thanks Tom. What advantage(s) have you found using the Signalink versus using the built-in sound card on the Yaesu?

It’s much easier to adjust on the fly, both TX and RX. Sound quality seems the same, though…

Signal link units are wonderful. Turn an older radio into a digital beast wit almost zero effort. Good video and Thanks.

I got a used SL USB on EBay recently. Hooked it up to my IC-718 yesterday and had a good 15 watt QSO with someone in northern Florida using PSK-31.

Q: Why does Tigertronics have different Signalink model #’s if any Signalink can be modified with jumpers to fit “any radio.” Hmmm. Thanks!

They started with a serial port, then moved to a USB. Since then they’ve mad several software changes to expand the capabilities. Then jumpers are needed to match the rig to the jig…. Hihi. They also have to work with several hundred radios and every new radio that comes on the market. I’ve probably had a dozen different rigs and have used the SL on all of them.

Great that also is other that use a piece of hardware between the Computer and the radio. I use Microham Micro Keyer II USB

I believe that microham uses the K1EL chip, which is the heart of the winkeyer
