We’re all about shooting sticks for shooting deer, extraction kit for hauling the carcase home, and a beginner’s guide to mounts in this episode of Fieldtester. David hosts, Tim Pilbeam and Roy Lupton chat, and all three of them try a variety of modern shooting kit. It’s Gadget Show for shooting sports. Meanwhile, James Marchington is off to the NSRA at Bisley to find out about batch-testing ammunition - how ammo manufacturer RWS makes sure you ammo is ‘of quality’.
Here is the kit showcased in this show:
Sticks
Spartan Sentinel, as used by Tim (comes with a fifth leg, too)
Homemade quad sticks, as used by Roy
Primos sticks, as used by Cai
Viperflex sticks, as used by Jason
Jakele sticks, as used by Charlie
Extraction
Tatonka backpack, as used by Cai. See our film here: Fcha.nl/labour...
Homemade trolleys, as used by Tim
Logic timber hauler, as used by Niall www.logictoday...

David, that must rank as one of your best chat productions. It was so relaxed and genial it was as if I was in the shed/ man cave (sign on wall) with you three. Tim and Roy passed on knowledge and experience in such a humorous way it was such a pleasure to watch. I use a Gen 2 Trigger Stick and oh yes, one must practice at the range and keep doing so to keep one's aim in. With regards the Tatonka backack; I saw it being used in a RU-vid video a little while back, from "Rogee Productions" where he used it to recover an deer whilst on one of his walk-in hunts in New Zealand. I asked him about it and he said that it was a field trial he was doing and that he found it ideal. Now in NZ the recoveries can be very challenging. When I was back over 3 years ago and went hunting my nephew he carried the fallow stag I shot up a very steep hill, with stag on his back piggy-back style, and having seen the Tatonka thought "That's what he needed". and having searched the internet none could be found....not yet released onto the market...I suspect it will sell well in NZ. Anyway David, keep up the good work.

I love this video idea, but I wish it was structured better, I wish we got to see more of each tripod/quadpod ect and see some shots using each one to get both opinions on them.

Great content and subjects, I’ve got a cheap set of quad sticks that work, and are OK to deploy after some practice, as Tim and Roy both agreed. Going onto picatinny mounts, Warne QD Return to Zero are fitted to all my scopes and do exactly what the box says👍 I just had to fit taller ones on my thermal scope to reduce the “Sunrise” of the hot moderator , after a shot. I did a video about QD mounts last year, to prove that they actually work. Thank you for the episode, as always, top class work👍

Extraction wise. I carry a flexible drag sledge. Folds away into any rucksack. Mine came with a webbing strap which i fixed to a shoulder harness. Dragged out two red deer last year and it went pretty well. Just avoid the rockie areas

You guys should try the blaser quad sticks that have the swivel front mount. You get the stability of the quad sticks but means you can twist the front grip ti move the rifle left and right. I borrowed a set on my dsc1 and loved them but can justify dropping £200 on a set of sticks! Brilliant video as always! Would be great to see some testing of .17hmr ammo.

WHEEL BARROW CHALLANGE! I’m in Sussex and I believe I have the best option! I have recently purchased an electric wheel barrow! With off road front tyre it’s perfect when you cannot get a vehicle onto wet ground. The yanks use them a lot in construction. Worth an look.

Picatinny Rails are great but I have learned 2 important lessons. Firstly .308 Mannlicher Pro Hunter shooters beware: there are at least 6 variations of where the mounting threads are on the receiver and many sellers of picatinny rails do not realise this, nor (amazingly enough) does Akah who own Steyr Mannlicher. After 12 months and 5 different rails I got a blank and had it drilled as a bespoke. Secondly, if you want to swap a normal scope with a thermal sight and use a moderator, ensure the mounts are high enough to avoid thermal white out in the bottom half of the thermal picture after 3 quick shots. A thermal cover on the moderator is some mitigation but not total.

Thanks guys , really enjoyed that film . Would like a film on gun cleaning, solvents/ oils / grease etc . How clean is clean ! . Shooting with a dirty barrel or oiled barrel . I have a cleaning routine that works for me , but still a grey area ,with no definitive approach.

I bought a set of Primos Trigger Sticks a few years ago, used in the rain and next time I went to use them, they had completely seized. Got a refund and bought a Viperflex quad pod with 5th leg.. Very stable and the whistling is stopped by insulation tape down the holes. Brilliant bit of kit

I'm watching from the US, I enjoy your programs. Regarding extraction - This last year after 2 of us middle age guys struggled to pull a 200 pound whitetail buck up a hill & then 3 of us struggled to lift it onto the back of the 4 wheeler, I bought a Shappell Jet Sled XL. It is meant to pull behind a snow machine but it slides right over mud, dirt, grass, everything but gravel & rock. Regarding the scope mounts, I like pic rails on a tactical weapon but not on a hunting gun, as noted they push the optics up higher. I use a standard Leupold or Redfield base with turn in style rings & a Leupold M8 4x fixed power scope with the lowest rings that line up with my eyeball. Keep is simple, set it up & forget it.

Great video. I’ve stitched together a webbing shoulder/ backpack style sling to extract Roe and Fallow. Ergonomic and easy to stash away in a pocket or bumbag. Need to tie neck up to stop flopping around but quick and easy to use regardless. Cost me nothing to make from old webbing and plastic buckles from old rucksacks

Hi I have recently found Dentler mounts , but before these I have used a lot of different mounts , you have to order from optics trade in Slovenia ( I think !! ) but in my opinion they are the best return to zero mounts available today , I regularly switch from thermal to day scope and I have never lost zero yet You can even buy a variable mount so that you an buy 1 scope to fit different rifles and still not loose zero and you don't have to re-zero your scope !!

Honestly guys! Here in New Zealand you would never get any meat out of the forest or mountains if you relied on devices to recover your kills. Here you man up and carry it out in pieces!...Many trips if you want the whole animal.

I suspect shooting sticks are not a thing with American hunters is that they typically hike farther into the wilderness that is more diverse terrain than what the typical European hunter experience; meaning American hunters are not interested in carrying extra weight they don't need when natural rests are typically available such as trees and such.
@MrPh30
@MrPh30 2 года назад
More bipods in use in US also, first it was Harris they used so much of and everyone liked it so the Snipers adopted or borrowed it from other rifles. Then the Versapod came which is a copy of Parker Hale,perhaps the best of them for many years to come, but also much of the rifle alihg also with the US . And quick sling ala Rhodesian Sling is one many would benefit to get one of to fix on rifle.
@Oldhogleg
@Oldhogleg 2 года назад
@@MrPh30 Yeah, the "shooting sling" has largely been forgotten among hunters. I also like the Ching-Sling in addition to the Rhodesian-Sling . Yeah, the Harris bipod is simple and light, and the Parker-Hale/Versa-pod provides a hand stop for sling shooting with the QD pod legs.
