This has made my Sunday. Watching this was so nice. My Sugar midlife hated the groomer. I never did hand stripping mostly because no place here (that I was aware) did it. Early in life I did the skirt. It looked cute. Later in life we did this cut for convenience. Sugar was touchy with her face also. Looking at Sami makes me remember my girl and I have tears of Joy (and sorrow for sugar) seeing him. Thanks for the video!
Oh Yes, how adorably handsome Sami is! My female always loved her look & feel after grooming. My male on the other hand would act embarrassed or shy no matter how much we praised or made over him. You could tell he felt better though from the added pep in his step. Like that lighter feeling we humans have after a good haircut. Great video as always, Thanks & have a great weekend.
Thank you 🥰 Haha, I think it's a weird feeling after grooming, Sami scratches his belly a lot because I am guessing the new short hair tickles him 😅 But I think they feel better, for sure. Thanks Brenda, have a great weekend! (and have some cake or a glass of wine for Sami's birthday!) 🍰✨
Hi Miruna! It is wonderful how much you have learned about owning a Westie , and sharing your knowledge with other Westie owners. Candi didn't like getting baths either. See Sami doesn't either. So So cute !!.
Walking every day having a short skirt and shorthair on the legs makes the up keep so much easier! I keep Taz cut short like you and the special shampoos help so much with keeping down skin problems!
We have a Westie and I simply could not deal with (or afford) to bring him to the groomer every 6 weeks for hand stripping ... So I am grooming him now with a scissor cut. his hair grows in curly since we stopped stripping. This was a good call out. Sorry to hear that Sami has skin allergies. I heard that is a common Westie issue, but we have not really experienced it to the same degree of severity. We avoid washing our Westie and we take extra care to dry him completely when he gets wet.
You are such a great Westie mommy! You cut your Sami very similarly to how I used to get my Sparky cut. He always did best when his belly area was cut extremely short. It was much more hygienic that way regarding pee. I also had the back end cut exceptionally short too, and that kept that area clean. Beautiful and happy video!
We lived with our Westie on the edge of the forest. With the traditional haircut, he carried a lot of pine needles and small twigs into the house. So we decided to have a short belly hair to bring the housework down to a tolerable level.
How nice you can watch Sami being groomed. There isn't room to do that at our groomers. When we bathe our Westie at home, we use Coatex which we buy from our vet, it is for sensitive skin.
I love Sammy. Currently working away from home so have not seen my wee Hamish for nearly a week, I can't wait to get home and get some westie loving. For the record, Hamish hates being groomed. I will show this video to him so he knows how to behave in the future.
My Mom would put cotton balls in her westies ears during bathing to avoid infections. and then when she blew dry him it didn't bother his hearing. then she would clean his ears with cotton swabs with something on them to get the bad stuff out. He also needed special shampoos for his skin allergies. She even trained him when to shake during the bath so she wasn't as wet as he was. :-) He loved the towel drying , rolling on all over when she did it. Blow drying was fun for him as well. He liked the soft brush afterwards but didn't like the wire brush at all but tolerated it.
We don’t get to watch our dogs get groomed so this was so nice to watch! Sami is a great sport, he is so patient. He’s adorable but I am also very biased to westies. 😄 Do they trim his nails or do you do it all with the grinder?
I've heard this before and I am surprised, why wouldn't they let you in? I only took Sami to 2 grooming places in different countries so far, but I could always go in with him 🙂 I trim his nails at home with the grinder, because he can't stand the nail trimmer. He is very afraid. I am glad you enjoyed it 🥰
Great video. I learned a lot. I didn’t know the benefit of blow drying and Scout just had her bath and wow she didn’t like that but considering the advantages she will have to get used to it. Keep the info coming. Azie and Scout
✨💖✨The closest groomer who hand strips for our wee MacLaren is 4 hour away. He is only 6 months, so I bathe him, brush and trim the essentials. We have snow right now. We shared our home with a Westie for almost 15 years, and I groomed him, but I had learned with clippers when my family had Scotties. I’m sure there are folks who are passionate about the method of how to groom a Westie, but MacLaren isn’t a show dog. Like you, I like the blunter, rounded trim on the ears. We’ll how long I can let my little scruffalo go before I order some clippers. (Scruffallo = scruffy+buffalo. When he was tiny, he was a fluffalo.)
Do not wash your Westie 14 days before and after hand stripping. Maybe that's the cause of he's skin problems. If you wash him, there are small holes where the hairs was and it can cause an infection.
We never liked the show dog look. We never understood WHY a marshmallow head was considered attractive. What you are doing with Sami is what my Mom would do. THAT is a Westie!!
Hi new to your channel. I'm in Australia and just about to get our second Westie. Our beloved Fergus died earlier in the year and we are so lost without him. I'd love to know more about hand stripping. Is it easy to learn??
Hi Marie! I'm sorry for your loss. I am glad you are getting another Westie 😍 Here are two videos I made during the pandemic, when I tried hand stripping at home 😅 I tried to explain the important points: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nFQLYgWT2qo.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--2G4JVLwu9w.html I hope it helps you learn! If you have the chance, I recommend you first go to a professional and watch how they do it and ask them to explain. Good luck and I hope you get your puppy soon!
Sammy is a cutie. I’m sorry that I don’t agree with the hand stripping technique. I feel it is too time consuming for the dog and as a Westie owner I clip my dog myself. He is 11 and has never had any skin issues which I am very thankful about. I enjoy the process of bathing and clipping and love the way he looks. Actually I do it as needed in stages, bathing one day and the clip the next day. Also he gets brushed everyday. To each his own right.
I 100 agree I’ve had 6 westies 4 of them are rescues and I rarely wash her because she gets really traumatised and clip a little bit at a time. Sami is a beautiful westie but the breeder should not be breeding any more as Sammi has skin allergies and legs problems probably all genetic and just leads to more dogs suffering.
Yes, there are stripping stones (porous material, helps grip the hairs) and metallic tools you also use for gripping. And rubber "fingers". I used to have these when I tried stripping Sami during the pandemic. Spoiler alert: it's not easy, takes a long time and you need to know what you're doing, to make sure you don't over pluck and to make sure it's not painful :) If you want to learn, I suggest asking a dog groomer to teach you.
Miruna, I think there is a problem with making comments on your channel. I could only make a comment here because if I try underneath your video after all the printing and information it jumps up to the top for some odd reason, Never has happened before to me. Sami looks so content in your arms. He looks like he is going to fall asleep. So precious. He is such a good boy for you. Don't you just love their temperament? A few more weeks and I will be able to see and pick out my little baby girl, Ellie. I am so excited. I am so glad you were able to get his hair hand stripped. For some reason our breeder does not recommend it. I have only done it one time with my Lilly, and it did it by my own two hands and boy they were very tired afterwards. Have a great week you and Sami both.
I don't know why this happens 😕But I am glad you could leave a comment! Ahaha, in the beginning and end of the video when I held him, he actually fell asleep 😂🥰 Aww, I am so happy for you!! Having a puppy girl must be so exciting! ❤ Yes, doing hand stripping by yourself is exhausting, I tried once too and it took me hours, then I never tried again, haha!
