Have you ever been to a thrift store and thought "if I just knew how to upholster I would buy that chair/couch/etc"? If yes, then this video is for you. As a first timer, I was highly intimated to take this project on myself - but in today's video I show you that if you have the patience to learn something new, and the belief that you can do it - you can learn just about anything you want to. I promise you - if I can do it, SO CAN YOU!!! So how about we jump into today's episode?

When you stopped in the middle of the project to learn to sew I thought I’d vomit! 😂. I just cannot believe you pulled this off! I’m so stinking proud I teared up at the end! From someone who has sewn projects: You rocked it!

You win for best comment, lol!!!!! You thought you’d vomit?? I felt like vomiting! 🤣 I was like what did I get myself into. I was staring at the instruction book thinking “I don’t get it” and that’s when I went searching for a video. It wasn’t until she walked me through it that things started to click. I knew that I would be able to tackle the piping - that was easy. The cushion cover literally made me sweat! But in the end it all came together and I am sooooo happy with it. THANK YOU so much for watching and cheering me on today! 😆🥰

Oh my goodness - that is probably one of the nicest comments I've received - thank you!!!!!! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the video and I hope that you will continue to do so. I love curating these videos each week, and it brings me so much joy when people find me and end up loving them too! I still can't believe I reupholstered that couch......I'm thinking it's time for another try on a different piece of furniture very soon. Thank you again - you made my day!

It is STUNNING! Thank you for this video. I have a dining banquette that I want to reupholster and this has given me the confidence to try it. One quick tip: IF your dining sofa feels a little too low when you sit at it to eat, you may want to swap out the legs with some that you can find on Amazon. While deciding if I should recover my banquette or try to buy a new sofa, I noticed that sofas tend to be about 2” too low for comfortable dining. If you’re having that issue, that would be an easy fix. Again, THANKS. It looks AMAZING! 🤩 It was great to see a beginner to do this, and I can’t wait to try it with mine.

Just came across your channel and saw what an amazing transformation you did on your sofa. Now I want to do mine. And yes, having a sewing machine is so helpful. I don't know what I'd do without one. I'm short and have to hem all my pants lol. I will say you are making strides. Will be looking to see what else you post. Thank you for your inspiration :)

Your execution was flawless from the find to the fabric to the sewing piping I came here to get some inspiration for the drop cloth reupholstering I will be doing in a few minutes and I have never done something like this and I am not confident I will come this close. You rocked it, I was smiling so hard the whole time. Cause WHAT ma'am do you mean your a beginner TUH you did an amazing job.

Awwww that you love! I think that entire project was an out of body experience because I still can’t believe I did that by myself. But like I say in so many of my videos - if you just break the task down step by step, all you have to do is make the first step…and then move onto the next. 😅 I think I need to try another project soon to make sure it wasn’t just beginners luck! Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment - I truly appreciate it!

About 20+ years ago I recovered a couch. I had a dear friend who had some experience recovering furniture tell me how to do it. I’m 70 now and hand strength along with bad knees and a tired body, I can’t do these things any more, but YOU ROCK! And for those of you under 60, YOU CAN do it also, it may take a while longer, but as you can see, it’s not so difficult as long as you are determined.
@jessicapayne

Awwww thank you for this! You are absolutely correct in saying that anyone can do this. I promise this was my very first time, and with a little patience (ok, a lot of patience), a little research and a lot of some time - it was possible. Just break everything down into little tiny steps - that's the key. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment, I truly appreciate it.

I'm attempting to reupholster my first couch too. I purchased an arhaus sectional off of Facebook marketplace that is 4 years old but has a white slip cover. I have 3 kids under four so a white couch is a no go. The couch itself was 10k new so I couldn't pass it up for $400. Anyways your video was so so helpful and I really think the fact that you were doing it for the first time helped teach things simply and humbly. I also appreciated how you did it in real time so I'm not walking away thinking that this is a one day job! Thank you thank you!

If it weren't for this video, I would have a hard time believing that this was my first time. I'm telling you, if I can sit there and figure it out - I PROMISE that you can too. Everything I learned came right here from RU-vid, so it makes me so happy knowing that my video is inspiring you and others to do it too. Best of luck with your couch - for that price, I would have snatched it up too!!!

But luckily I think I was able to pull it off. I’m so happy you love it! You’re right - the options for accents are endless. I have a set of pillows that I’m definitely going to use and then I’m also going to make some extra pillows with the leftover fabric. Well done, Jessica! My husband heard me “coaching from the sewing sidelines” lol and joined in to watch. Using the old fabric as a pattern was a master stroke. Pillows are the only thing that I have ever tried without a pattern. My late grandmother and grand aunts were seamstresses and didn’t rely on patterns to sew but they taught me well. Cannot wait to see your finished space! Until next weekend. Best, W.

Hahaha awwww I love it!! I knew my only option to pull off making the cover was to use the old fabric as a template. The curves and the ends intimidated me for sure. Awww thank you Janett for your comment 🥰🥹 - I truly appreciate it. To hear that you are inspired after watching my content just makes me the happiest. I truly just want to spread the message to live your life as fearlessly as possible while you can. I was crippled with fear to do so many things during several points in my life, but now after many pivot opportunities, I decided that I’m just going for it. If I fail - then I’ll try again. If no one wants to go with me - I’ll go by myself. If I’m afraid to try a different type of food - I hype myself up and say it’s just one bite. At the end of the day what is the worst thing that could really happen? That’s what I try to tell myself when fear creeps in. If you lack confidence - just keep trying and practicing until you feel your confidence start to build more. Trust me - if I can do it, literally anyone can. I freakin learned how to sew right on camera 😅 that still blows my mind. Lol!!!! Thank you again for commenting - I’ll be checking in on you to see how that sewing is coming along! 😉

I just recently came across this in NYC because my sofa wouldn't fit through the entry....the folks are called The Sofa Dr. I think you can now add this title to your portfolio because you did the damn thing. Wow, you really can do anything and so proud you are showing us that in real time! Can't wait for the dining room reveal 😊

Thank youuuuu! This project took countless hours, but it was worth every second. I think I’m going to make sure the next project is a little easier. 😅 But I agree, this one is going in the portfolio!

You are fearless!!!!!! It looks beautiful and I enjoy watching everything you do! I'm sure your new sewing machine will get a work out! Have you thought about sewing cloths as well? Can't wait for the next three weeks of videos.

Thank youuuu!!!! Oh I’m thinking about all of the things now! 😆 I figure, as long as I have a pattern, I should be able to create so many things. I’m gonna first start with simple dresses to wear this spring and summer and then go from there!!

Awesome job, thank you for sharing. I plan on covering my old couch but I’m going to use several bedspreads, I’m limited on funds. I also don’t know how to sew but like you I believe I can learn almost anything on you tube. I have learned and completed my backsplash in the kitchen, put down LVP planks on the kitchen floor and used kitchen cabinets to make an kitchen island all from watching RU-vid. I think my husband is going to surprise me with a sewing Machine, he enjoys watching me take on learn how to do new projects. Once again thank you for being an inspiration.

Thank you!!!! There is nothing you can’t learn on RU-vid right? I promise you that you can do it. If you just break it down step by step - it really is easy. As you’re going along, if you have any questions at all that I can help with, please don’t hesitate to reach out! Good luck and have fun!! 😆

Good morning my dear! 💕 I'm always so happy when it's time to watch. A sofa in the dining room is delicious! 🤤 It's so elegant! I love it when you make your home your own fantasy. A wonderful idea. You my dear are a genius ☺️ thanks to you I may never buy retail furniture again. That couch looks like it cost $2000. You go Lady!!!! 👍 I believe you can do the zipper. You can get the skill just like you just taught yourself how to redo that couch. You're amazing 🤩 your choice of fabric is perfect. I am never disappointed on Sunday except when you're not here. 😆

Awww thank you!!! I’m telling you - with a little patience and time, you can find so many second hand gems. Now that I have this skill under my belt - watch out, lol!!! Last night I was thinking that I could probably figure out the zipper. I ran out of time for todays video - but I just may try this week and show you guys next Sunday. We’ll see. Thank you as always for watching - I so appreciate you!

Random question for the group here: Can you just add fabric on top of the existing? Or would it look weird, and its best to remove the existing fabric? Thanks for the good, and very honest-about-timeline-needed-to-do so video :):)
@jessicapayne

Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment - I'm so glad that you enjoyed it! I would say that you could absolutely add fabric on top of existing fabric - but it also will depend what type of furniture you are trying to recover. If it's a seat cushion, then I would say absolutely yes. If the existing fabric isn't too bulky, then yes! However, if it's a chair or sofa with a heavier fabric or a darker color than the new fabric, then it may be better to remove the old. I say that because it may be easier for you to attach the new fabric without all of the old fabric and old staples getting in the way. It could also end up looking a little bulky/chunky. It wouldn't be impossible, it would just may make things a little easier. I will say removing all of the old staples is NOT fun. At all. But once it was done, I liked having clean slate to work with. I hope this helps! Good luck on your project and if you have any other questions, please let me know!!!

Hi there! I purchased 12 yards and used about 11 of it. I have enough left over to make a couple of pillows if I want to!

You may have just inspired me to reupholster our 70s couch. It's made of solid wood and steel but the foam and fabric have dry rotted and smell awful.
