This simple yet profound tool has been used in traditional karate since ancient times.
How do the masters use them in their practice?
Hanshi Judan, Kakazu Sensei, shows us how he does it. Oss!

While on Okinawa, I practiced Okinawan Shorin Ryu Matsumura. We used those. Great videos. I am 72 now, and still practice kihons, pinans, and Some weapons....baton, short staff, and bo forms. My Grandson is his 4th month of BBJ and still will not mess with me. Tells me I am still to fast for him.

I am 81 5 foot 8" my grandson is 6.4" and 29 . I can still kick to his head ( no contact ) with jodan keage( think Billy Jack ) Fast and hard. Its a fantastic kick to master ( very hard to block it ).no need to go into any stupid karate stance .Just stand facing the guy and snap foot up and in .( like a reverse mawashi geri ) Check out u tube clip ( Billy Jack kicks posner)

Another great exercise for waist rotation is to get a 9 ft long staff and, holding it out at an angle, try to make it flex and snap back using waist power alone.

This is something that Okinawan karate seems to focus on: building a hard body. Each of those impacts creates microstresses on the bones of the hands, fingers, wrists, and forearms. Over time (we're talking months to years here), the bones will remodel themselves to accommodate the repeated stress. It's really fantastic training, especially for women worried about osteoporosis later in life, or really anyone worried about frailty. You don't have to hit it terribly hard, but you do need to deliver enough of an impact to feel it create some stress. And pad that thing up. There's no reason to shred your skin while doing this.

It defo hardens your hands .I still have mine ( trained 1972 to 80 ) I only use it now for breathing exercise ( I am 81 ) .But I was the only one in my dojo who used a punching post and the other guys used to complain about my hard hands . I broke a guys arm once with a block .( soto uke) .And messing around at work often got complaints about my hands . One thing I will say i have no arthritis even at my great age lol. I usedvto hit it about 120 times every other day ( knife hand , palm , knuckle ) Best every other day as gives hands a day to recover and calous up.

I've trained iron hand on a concrete wall for a year(backfist, straight fist, knife hand, palm, fingertips) 5-7 sets of 20-30 strikes as well as sokusen toe kick with qigong and dit dat jow liniment I got from a shaolin guy. Hands function perfectly, the skin has grown bigger, I can break bricks etc and my toe kick to the tigh can make people fold in pain). I also practiced walking on my bent toes around the tatami. I don't think it causes arm if you only train 3 times a week and use dit dat jow

What if your opponent does not stand there and allow you to strike him? Don't you think the heavy bag is a far better tool? At least the bag moves when you strike it. See my point do you?
@varanid9
@varanid9 2 года назад
@@johnreidy2804 Not really. The Makiwara develops calluses around the knuckles while giving a spring action that helps to keep the wrist bones from being damaged. The heavy bag currently in use by boxers is fine if you do all your striking with gloves on, but the Wing Chun Wall Bag will give the same results much faster as the wall doesn't move and provides infinitely more resistance than the heavy bag. Bare knuckle boxers preferred their bags under 40 pounds. I use a makiwara, a wallbag and a heavy bag as well as a double-end bag for timing hits on a fast moving target.

Despite their power unlike other martial teachers they believe the first rule of conditioning is NEVER DO HARM TO YOURSELF. PLEASE REMEMBER ITS NOT ANY GOOD IF YOU DAMAGE YOURSELF IN TRAINING OR PRACTICE.THERE’S NO POINT IN BEING SUPER HARD IF ITS GOING TO CRIPPLE YOU MAYBE MMA CAN LEARN FROM THIS GREAT MASTER.
@LeoValencia-zo6pt
@LeoValencia-zo6pt 5 дней назад
MMA is learning by only doing shadow simulation sparing. Max Halloway is a great example of this. He stopped sparring years ago, and plays video games and shadow boxes. There is no better training than getting punched in the face in my opinion

@@kamaschomartialartskarate6831 Can I ask what the purpose of katas would be in your new style? As far as I know...the purpose of katas are to be a mnemonic device. They help us remember techniques used in two man drills. They pair related technhniques together...showing us how to use certain techniques and may also contain counters to those techniques. They are for solo training. Whereas when we're with others perhaps we should focus on the practice of those partner drills ..or sparring or conditioning drills as we would when we are learning boxing or wrestling. So, perhaps the only person who could know whether your new style needs Kata or not is you. So, what's new about your new style?

Are you sure you know all about your original style how long have you been training? It takes over 30 years to achieve anything like a fifth Dan in traditional styles with correct teaching.Many modern instructors never stay long enough to reach that standard hence the difference in real karate.Karate is a study for life and a way of discovering your true self.If you feel you need to take a new journey in your study I wish you luck but don’t leave behind what you already have gained and may still have much to learn from.
