Making 500 Leather Wallets By Hand
We were contracted to make a batch of private label wallets out of a distributor's hides. We made 500 of our leather card wallets by hand in about 3 weeks time between the two of us. I punch, we both sew (and film!), and Kayleena takes care of the edge burnishing and finishing. It's really fun to get big jobs like this, lots of work but super fulfilling to see all those wallets laid out in the end!

Those dies save so much time 😳 I’m still cutting everything by hand and it takes forever.

Can the dies also punch holes for saddle stitching while it is cutting the leather?

I mean it's fair enough cutting by hand when leathercraft is a hobby or on low scale, I suppose when it starts becoming an actual job it's basically mandatory. Imagine cutting FIVE HUNDRED pieces by hand hehe 😂
@Eristhenes
@Eristhenes 3 года назад
@ Isaiah Struve-Everyone seems to be advertising "handmade" when they are using machines, which is understandable in but then you lose the art and authenticity of the "handmaking'; it dilutes the art form. Handmade imparts a level of exclusivity which is valued in the marketplace. I suspect that's what some artisans are still trying to latch onto while they are using their machines to make pieces. But that is unfair to the true artisans like yourself.

You guys should use the leftover leather scrap pieces between your dye stamps for stuff like belt loops, key fobs with your logo, etc. They have a good shape to them.

I think a lot of people who watch these videos tend feel to personally that the video is somehow about them. I enjoy leather crafting and and Sub amature at best but I'm not offended that you've gone a semi commercial "mass production" with this one. You saw something you wanted and you went for it. Good on ya buddy.
@oakmoonlifeleathercrafting4337
Thats lots of wallets, back breaking work! Good Job. I once had a order of 100 pieces of ID tag holders, took me a month to finish it. I had to take a week long break after the order was finished haha.
@Corter
@Corter 6 лет назад
Using a hand operated clicker press is pretty hard on your body- blew my rotator cuff punching this order. But you are correct, the design and production of this order was designed to keep everything within a budget the customer had, and we were happy to help!

Agreed, I expected at least some edge paint action but it's more like mass produced beginner's project.
@Corter

as the client was the leather producer, they wanted a simple waxed edge to show the interior dye-thru of their hides for these pieces to be given out to customers. However we did provide them with an edge painted sample as well!

Your videos are amazing, I love seeing the process and you display it so well. I have arthritis and it's difficult for me to cut my templates by hand (swollen fingers) but have been thinking of ways to help the process and want to go the "clicker press" way to cut the main body of my items. This would leave me the time to design the intricate parts by hand. I've done a little research but your set up of die cuts and the clicker press look like something I could handle. Can I ask what tonnage the clicker press is? I read in the comments about damaging your shoulder, have you tried rotating the arm you use to lessen the stress or is it hard to use the machine with your right arm. I'm always trying to vary the way I cut or stitch etc to try and lessen the burden on my joints so that I can continue working. Regards Cherylene

I’m 15 and I just decided “oh I want to try and make wallets and sell them.” I would of course never get to mass making like you but would this be somehow that’s easy? After getting the stuff needed I feel that it doesn’t look as hard as it is including with practice. Would you recommend something like that for me?

1. Have your own designs or at least have your own twist on it. 2. Count up all expenses 3. Narrow down your niche "who do you want to Target" and market to them.
@AdinoEznite

If you join the Facebook group, "Clicker Die Swap and Sell", you can find some inexpensive dies and die makers who can make you some at various prices. You can find used dies. You can also make a clicker press out of an arbor press, look up "arbor press clicker press" to see different videos. It's not as fancy as the professional ones, but, it'll get the job done at a low price, and get you started on going professional with various sized lots.

To have dies your gonna save alot of time in mass production... but dose everyone that wants a handmade wallet want something similar to the rest ? ..... one change in a design and your back to cutting by hand It's sad that few understand what time and effort goes into it,, they see 20$ of material and 20$ for your time as a reasonable price... but to hole punch, hand stitch ,dye , burnish,condition , and some want stamp work .... it takes time that buyers dont appreciate Buy good leather for the outside and internal pockets get coats from second hand stores... made my money back on tools and learned how "I" was gonna do it.... a dash of exotic skins can get some cash too, a 70$ snakeskin got me 2 externals and 3 internal pockets (people will pay for it) the leftovers became 6 lighter cases 10$ each 20 minutes each Vegetable tan and tie dye to customers request letting them think you had to go out of your way for blue leather .. play them and make your money ....., dont cut deals, sell them at a lower start until your good,emphasize how long it takes , price goes up as you get better , you get faster dont tell people
@Jento

@@matthewdenty7760 See, I don't even consider these wallets to be hand made, myself. Hand sewn, but that's it. Not trying to talk down about Corter or whatnot... Just that I don't consider it hand made when machines are involved. If it was hand cut, and hand burnished, then yeah, hand made. This is not, though. Real hand made, made with quality, gets a better price from people that see it's actually hand made, because they understand the time, effort, and uniqueness.

Using cutting dies may seem like cheating, but cutting by hand has no benefit to the product. Hand stitching on the other hand allows for a stronger stitch and much closer attention to detail. If you don't want them to use dies then why stop there? Might as well cut it with a stone blade to be "authentic". Cutting dies have been around since the early 1800s.

@Jento
@Jento 3 года назад
It's not about being authentic. It's about being hand made. You can't call it hand made if you're cutting and burnishing with a machine. Nothing against making it that way, but people, I think, take issue with calling something hand made that isn't actually hand made. These are only hand sewn. Everything else was done with machine; cutting, burnishing, stamping. Ergo, not hand made.

I don't understand all those comments about this craft not being hand made...even if there is a "machine", it is still operated by hand, and the stitching is all hand made. So yeah, they outsmarted you and simplified the part of the work that could be semi-automated, deal with it, stop arguing the hand made part and learn something.

Being an aerospace sheetmetal mechanic, some machining, ultra precision TIG welder (retired) and knifemaker I could make all of those dies and the wooden burnishing shaft. I guess it isn't handmade because l didn't make the thread? I presume they didn't make the dies, but making steel rule dies isn't really that hard.

@alaskankare

they said it was a custom order, so to make a die just for that, probably not worth it.
@joemartins1970
@joemartins1970 6 лет назад
alaskankare I missed that detail. Now it makes sense. Especially if they're frequently fulfilling custom branded orders. On a different note, I checked Weaver's website (the site they recommended for custom dies) and I couldn't find any die-making services. I'll reach out to them directly to see who they might recommend.
@shaymarie7045
@shaymarie7045 2 года назад
Cutting out the wallet with the die and stamping the logo takes two different amounts of pressure, more for the cutting and less for the stamped logo. The die would have to be made in such a way that the logo stamping has to be recessed into the die where when making the cutting part the logo part simply kisses the leather and not cut into it. Hence, a differently structured die all together. If I were making that many wallets on a chimerical level with that machine I would have more than one die for that particular wallet, maybe 3 or 4 dies per style. Shaves time off of the cutting time.

Seems I was mistaken. They say it is saddle stitching... They're just holding pressure on the back side. Can be done without a pony that way, though the stitching doesn't come out as "pretty" and it can warp some of the leather between stitching.
