Hand overcasting raw edges was very common historically (probably much more common than French seams) for finishing seams. I think it looks and works great.
Thanks for the information regarding flatlining a bias cut piece. I hadn't been quite sure whether the flatline fabric should be on the bias, but your information confirmed what I was thinking--that cutting it on the grain would anchor the main fabric.
glad I could help! I think lining a bias piece with another bias piece might be ideal for some garments but not others.. I designed this pattern to be cut on grain so its not relying on the bias stretch to fit and is better if it doesn't have that stretch. if this pattern were made to be cut on the bias id cut the lining on the bias too!
