Steve wouldn't need to do this but when I drill the holes, I first use a ball fraser drill bit and drill a quarter of the way down 1st to get my spacing a little at a time then when happy with the spacing I drill using Dremel Jewelry Drill Bit (1mm for 2mm stone). Haha, need every bit of help I can get

The spacing for the drill holes can vary depending on how deep the seat is cut and whether you want the stones to be girdle to girdle. As the seats are cut deeper the space between the stones gets smaller. I think I set my dividers to 2.5 mm to locate the drill locations for this piece.

Dressing the prongs is more time consuming than difficult. I use an escapement file, abrasive wheels, a beading tool and polishing wheels to give them their final shape.
Some rings that look similar to this one are made with shared prongs which means there are two prongs per stone. This method will work for securing the stones if done properly but the stones will not be as secure as the four prongs per stone method that I use.
