Wow! That was a labor intensive project. Kudos to you for not going off the deep end when the tape tried to scuttle the puzzle. It came out great. After all that and not taking a reference picture beforehand - brave move. :-) As someone who also has a scroll saw and makes puzzles (not that many pieces, though), Look into thin spiral blades. They make that kind of thing a bit easier since you don't have to twist the puzzle around constantly while cutting. Not good for everything, but they have saved my sanity a few times.

I’m not sure if it’s available in Australia but there’s a product called “frog tape” that would have eliminated the tape problem you were having. Regular masking tape like the tape you were using has a 3 day release which means after 3 days the adhesive bonds to the surface instead of just lightly adhering but frog tape has a 21 day release which means if you leave the tape on even for 3 weeks it’ll still peel right off. It’s expensive stuff but worth it!

That type of blade is really hard to control due to it is easy to get off the cutting line. There are special blades made for making jigsaw puzzles. Very thin and they break fairly easily but the thin kerf really makes for a tight fitting puzzle. I've made several puzzles and it has taken me twice as long as I had thought it would take.

What amazes me the most of your projects is the sheer patience you need to make them. The many little details and time needed to make them would drive most crazy just by planning them, and yet you mke it look so soothing and kind of fun. Side note: I don´t know how it was made in older times but I belive modern jigsaws are cut by CNC machines. Still, point still valid: Not many would dare to test thier patience by cutting the jigsaw this way, which is astounding IMHO

I only found this out recently, but tape manufactures actually publish the "days of clean removal" in the data sheet. Apparently most masking tape will "bake" on after a few days.

😅 We found out the hard way a few years back when my boyfriend and I painted our apartment and set up an AC on the window. Uffff! It took us forever to remove the masking tape off of the wall and we had to do some repainting and the window frames were the most challenging part. We had a professional window frame installer come to remove all the window frames inside and outside to be redone and put back on. This was done 'cause the window frames were in excellent condition. Best decision other than ruining the window frame and the wall in the living room.

Nice projekt! In my youth, I worked for some years with construction cleaning. A surprising amount of billable time came from removing tape that had been covering things for too long. When tape was on things like hardwood floors or around windows, it even happened quite a lot that the paint/laquer underneath followed with the tape. Tape that stay on for some time can be a huge problem - especially if its somewhere there are lots of sunlight or where people walk a lot.

@gnarthdarkanen7464

Thanks, man! This was educational on a couple levels! So... I discovered sometime back, similar to this video's illustration, that the "cure time" as actually required by most clear-coats is NOT all together true. The time-frame posted on the container is "dry to touch" only. There's still another couple days required for "hardening up" levels of curing, especially important on projects that require tape or adhesives applied onto the clear-coat. Keeping a piece warm and stable for at least 3 extra days (and sometimes 5) will help the clear-coat totally cure into a chemically inert state, and THEN the tape shouldn't stick as much. Some adhesives involved in tape will also interact with the chemistry of clear-coats, and can do some interesting and strange things... from "greying" to a weird polymerization process that creates(?) little waxy or rubbery balls of "goop" seemingly entirely to add frustration... In any case, this craft is a steady experience in education. We never stop learning, and once in a while, learning costs us in time and resources. ;o)

If you read the label on the masking tape when you get it, it usually says how many days you can expect to leave it on before removal becomes a huge problem. I only learned this after leaving tape on something too long. I suppose that's probably how almost everyone learns about this.

Really nice project and especially so using scrap wood. Having the timber on just one side of the MDF is a bit of a concern. After a while you may find the jigsaw curls up. We learnt, when applying veneer, you need to balance the piece and have equal thicknesses of veneer on both sides of the MDF "backer" (And MDF is an excellent backer). Great series and thanks for the vid. Cheers, David
