You like me have learned so much in our machine journey. But it’s the failures that teach the most and endure the longest. They are gold. You took on a real job and made a go of it. You lifted the standard of what’s possible in our own shops and I for one will pin the name plate of legend on you. Remember the tool room lathe, the precise milling machine, the super grinders, the planers all predate CNC. I program and run CNC machines but my shop is old school. I know what’s possible and it takes re-learning what our fathers and grandfathers knew. We fail along the way but we don’t quit. You never quit! At the end you stand behind a six jaw chuck and the world stands humbled in your presence. Keep it up pal!!!!

From another Australian - I've seen a few of your projects and been amazed at what you get done. *This is your best yet. Its just stunning how well done this is.* Your attention to detail is humbling. On could have done it better? Buddy most of us can't do this at all. Its why we have to buy them and unless we have saved a lot of money can't afford ones this good.
I took up this fascinating career and started out, obviously, making a 1-jaw chuck. I could never quite get it to work, I guess I was missing something, never completed it and so had to go back to my old job as a political adviser.
You have now turned machining into an art! To see that parting line dissappear when you tightened the two halves together.... just magical! Thanks for sharing your talent and craft with us, Cheers
Mind blown. This really gives you an appreciation of why a high quality commercial chuck costs so much. Even assuming most of it isn't done by hand, there's so many steps and so much precision is needed.
Machinists: l need a 6 jaw chuck... Cà Lem: Hold my beer... That is an absolutely amazing piece of work. To design it is incredible, to come up with a way to make your design, the fixturing involved and the thought process to bring what you saw in your head to life are what set you apart from other machinists. Very well done!

Unreal, your patience to take on a project like this is an art. The time to make a 6,4, or 3 jaw chuck to any level especially to your standards is outstanding. Well done. Dont be hard on yourself it can lead to self destruction.
When you think your disappointed with your result try to find a video of someone else making a better 6 jaw vice then you just made. There are no videos of anyone else doing that because it is a very impressive thing to do and you are one of those guys I wish I could have teach me more about machining.
This exactly. Good job, Calem! Nobody can perfectly execute every ambitious project on the first try. And the result is still very good-especially as the runout is consistently repeatable.
And with the tools he has that can be defined as basic for such a task and results! No CNC, DIY fixtures, gadgets, heat treatment. What an achievement.
I love all the fixturing and setups. Very good to see how you cut the teeth on the back of the jaw carriers. I need to make some custom soft-jaw carriers for one of my chucks. Seeing how you did it has inspired me to give it a try.
I am thoroughly blown away by the attention to detail holy smokes! That chuck is an absolute work of art and a joy to watch being created. If I could be even 10% as good a machinist as you I'd be set for life :D
1. Chucks are incredibly hard to make, and the more jaws the harder they are to make 2. No one in their right mind would attempt one, or expect it to be nearly perfect the first time. 3. You made a gorgeous, high precision 6 jaw chuck. 4. You are amazing! Happy and safe new year to you!

Awesome work man. It was a lot of work with all the setup tools that you needed to make. Maybe you think you could have done better, it is still awesome work. Look at the progress you have made in a short time. Every project will be better then the last. Not sure if we ever find perfection. There is always something to improve. Just keep going and hope you have a happy new year!!
Thanks for being honest about making mistakes. For most of us, they are the normal part of work rather than the exception. but being able to recover from them and save the part is what makes us better machinist. The work you do is beautiful and appreciated. Happy New Year.

Pretty awesome to make a scrolling chuck with less than .0005" runout! I'm not sure there is much of a point in pursuing less, because we have non-scrolling chucks for that purpose ;-)
Great video series. Machining and engineering are very entertaining. The math on this, especially with the different radii needed to mill, is just staggering. The tool maker's tool maker!

That was mind blowing ! The amount of work you put into that was incredible and to end up with a chuck that looks good and has near zero runout amazes me ! 0.01 mm is close to 0.0004 in and that is total indicated run out so the workpiece is only 0.0002 off true and this would be mostly the clearances you need to ensure the chuck operates smoothly - I don’t know any machinist that wouldn’t be ecstatic with that ! Fantastic video !
With so many set ups, jigs, process... The work you have done on this is amazing. Where others answer to wanting 6 jaw is money, your answer is BUILD IT and be richer for it (in knowledge & savings)!
Ah, Cà Lem, I've never seen such craftsmanship, expertise, skill and INGENUITY in one place ever !!! Your closing title is ALMOST correct. Yes "continuous improvement" is how we should all go forward, so perhaps you're right to say "could have done it better". HOWEVER I think you CAN BE VERY HAPPY with the existing result, it's a great achievement and a beautiful creation, and without YOU it would all still be stock steel and scraps in the warehouse !!!

It would be a huge challenge for me just to build a rough working model of 3-jaw chuck out of wood… to watch you completely create a finely machined 6-jaw steel chuck from scratch, with all the interworking components, smooth operation, precise pieces & accurate movement with less then 0.01 runout is an amazing accomplishment and true testament to your exceptional level of talent & skills!! This chuck has to be the best thing I've seen made on any machinist channel on RU-vid. It looks magnificent and factory made. I don't want to even know how many hours you have invested in designing and building it. You set the standard for other machinist channels on RU-vid. Well done isn't strong enough. Spectacular is much better!
That's seriously very very impressive. Most of the machinists in youtube show machining single parts, this is a fully functioning project with a few complex parts done with a very good precision. Great works and thanks for the video!
I can't even count how many channels I'm currently subscribed to but you have one of the few channels where I actually watch all the videos. Fantastic content =) I work as a CNC-machinist myself making prototypes all day long ranging from small parts used in the medical field to big welded constructions that needs some finished machining in all sorts of different materials. The spiral scroll gear was amazing. I haven’t seen or heard of anyone making one from scratch. There are a few that made chuck but repurposed an old spiral scroll gear from a junk chuck. Thanks for sharing.
I am literally speechless at your skills and you've ended up with a more accurate chuck than 90% of respectable manufacturers. You're already at a Machining Genius status so only the Gods know what you'll be like when you're close to retiring age. Most Compliments don't even come close to sounding correct for you, but a simple well done will have to suffice. These two video's are the first I've seen and I'll no doubt love all the rest too.🙂
Some people complaint or get too exquisite by comparing tool brands, etc. The master makes his own tools and stop whining. You are not even satisfied and achieved a precision of 0.01mm!!! (or 0.39 thou for those in the world using that old unit of measure) I am very impressed with what you achieved man. Simply wow.
Despite the mistakes, the reworks, the scrapped parts, and any other problems the end result is still a beautiful tool with excellent repeatability. Of course, it's always important to strive for something and being able to learn from this might be worth more than the tool itself.

I see Ca Lem and I'm watching! Mistakes..... I'm getting senile. Although I'm andex toolmaker I mostly work in wood these days. Measure twice, cut once has degenerated into measure over and over while the sawdust builds up😬 Man you are hard on yourself. The pursuit of perfection is one thing, excellence another. Excellence is satisfying, perfection is deadly because it is unattainable. You do EXCELLENT work. I'd love for you to find satisfaction in that.
This requires a lot of patience, almost every workpiece needs to be made first clamping tools, I'm sure I don't have such a good mentality at the moment - you are my role model, thank you for your video
