Inspired by the Bronze Age Egtved girl burial, I plan the project and choose materials. Step one, sort and spin a Castlemilk Moorit fleece.
I now have a 'buy me a coffee' page which helps fund my ongoing research and the making of these free videos. If you'd like to support me, please visit ko-fi.com/sallypointer Thank you!

just wanted to let you know how much i appreciate your videos. i've been dealing with severe depression for the last many years.... i've had real trouble finding energy or motivation to play with anything fiber arts for a long time now, despite it being a real joy for me before the depression hit. your videos have been inspiring me to pull things out and play a bit. it's always a little bit better of a day when i see one of your videos in my feed. thank you.

Thank you so much. You are definitely not alone, and thank you for speaking up. The fibre community is so supportive and we are all here for each other.

Thank you for keeping this tradition standing. My grandma used to make blankets and ''jellaba'' moroccan dress. Wonderful

I can’t wait to see more! I’ve woven a blouse similar, but that skirt both fascinates and intimidates me. A really lovely video.

I want to thank you! I wanted to learn how to spin for years! But no space to put a spinning wheel. First time that I saw these spindels in the video here with you, and just a few days ago I saw 2 old spindels, (in good condition they say, and they look good to me...), for sale cheap on the second hand market. So I bought them, and went looking for wool, knowing near nothing about it. The wool just came in. I was blown away to find I bought 3 huge bags of beautiful sheeps, and lambs wool for peanuts! I was not expecting to get that much!!! Now I am waiting for the spindels to come in, and than I will try what you do here... I want to learn it all, how to work with the wool from the sheep to wool for a sweater! Thank you so much! I am FINALLY able to learn how to spin! Have a beautiful day! Much love!

I have a wheel and a number of spindles, and I definitely prefer the spindles They are portable - you don't have to sit in one place in one position. You will get the hang of spindle spinning quickly, I am sure. It is more of a hand skill than the wheel, so it takes time to get really good at it, but it is so much fun to practice. Best of luck with your lovely fleeces.

This is fantastic! I've only ever read about string skirts and not seen an example. (The book is Women's Work the First 20,000 Years) To see an example makes the reading more real in my mind.

ancient sheep would shed their fleece all over the place hence the term "wool gathering". It's only in fairly recent times that sheep have been bred to need shearing.
@SallyPointer

It's interesting to trace the development of shears and run that alongside the currently understood timeline for sheep being bred for shearable fleece

for anyone wanting to try this you dont need a fleece to teach yourself how to do this go to any store the sells 100% cotton balls and use those then you can dye it to the color you want. this how i taught myself and my son it works the same way and make wonderful thread.
@SallyPointer

Funnily enough my first spinning at the age of about 7 was cotton balls too, was all I could get at the time 🙂

I hope you continue the project! I'd really like to make one of these myself...and I would definitely appreciate your tutorial. Love, love, love your videos. I've been applying what you teach me about how my ancestors processed fibers to the invasive plants in my home. Making a thorn comb for bast from my local invasive trifoliate orange! Can't wait to try it on Kudzu fiber.

What is the purpose of a string skirt? It doesn't keep you warm. It doesn't protect your backside from bugs, sharp rocks, etc. I doubt it provides much in the way of modesty. Would this have been a purely ceremonial/funerary garment?
@SallyPointer
@SallyPointer 4 года назад
There is some very interesting and ongoing research into these, I'll try and summarise it when I do the video about making mine, but there are statuettes of them being worn by acrobat/possibly-priestess type figures, also earlier 'Venus' figurines in them. So yes, quite possibly ceremonial, but experiments with them have also shown them to be not as immodest as one might first think.
@EM-cg4iy
@EM-cg4iy 4 года назад
Do you ever think maybe something else was woven the other direction that has rotted away and left no trace? This skirt never made much sense to me. OTOH I suppose archaeologists would have been able to find some hint for sure?

@@SallyPointer I actually was hoping you'd model it! And not for pervy reasons - but I wanted to see if it would close up and not be as ... immodest as we would think it is (at least to modern standards of modesty) and see how it'd hang compared to levels of exposed skin. Would it be something that would be considered too revealing by our standards? Was it too revealing by their standards? Was she a bit of a girl about the town, or even a working girl? Many entertainers, and many priestesses were of, well, ladies of ill repute for monetary purposes throughout history. It's a damned odd piece of clothing and I'm so glad you brought it to our attention! Unfortunately it's 1AM so I won't get to research the topic until the morrow! :(

I'm so glad I found your channel! It really is a fantastic resource; thank you for making these videos! I would love to ask, how did you go about finding the farm who sold you the raw fleece for this project? I've had a go at spinning commercially available washed, carded, dyed roving before, but I would absolutely love to try processing and spinning raw wool - I'm just not sure where I should look to buy some? Do you have any recommendations? Thanks again!
