Making a Buckskin shirt

Hey Justin! For someone who has had no Mentor to show the techniques & tips... you are doing an OUTSTANDING job! I think that you are right about not "overthinking" it... and having the confidence in yourself to to start the project in the first place. When working with natural materials... perfection is rarely achieved. On the other hand, many of the Buckskin items were made by folks who had little to no experience in crafting them, back in the day. So... if it turns out a little on the crude end... you can make a pretty good case for it being pretty authentic!! Of course, like everything else in Life, the more experience that you acquire, the easier the next process and item will become! Well Don! I'm sure that you will ge a lot of use out of them all

Take a 5 gall bucket put a all thread rod through the center put your buck skin in it with mason sand hook you up some Angle iron and pull it around with your buggy till you get the fabric broke down like you like it that’s what I did to mine years ago

You did a great job on your shirt, especially considering you didn't use a pattern, I'm impressed! I've been sewing for a number of years now and recently made a buckskin jacket. When you make your jacket, it will help if you cut out all the pieces first. Also, the tightness you experienced around the arms and under near the chest is from not adding enough "ease" into your shirt. You can add a gusset where the sleeve meets the body. This will help relieve the tightness lifting your arm up and down. Adding some material to each side for both front and back will help relieve the tightness reaching forward and back. I like to sew from the top toward the bottom and from the center outward. I start at the neck opening and sew to each side, then fold the sleeve in half and mark the center point, I begin sewing about an inch behind the center seam and sew almost to where the gusset should be, sewing from behind the center seam forward will give you a strong stitch where the center seam meets the sleeve, then I sew from the end of the sleeve toward the body, where the gusset meets the sleeve, I then sew down each side of the gusset until it meets the body, then sew each remaining side of the gusset to the body until the stitches meet, then sew the sides as far down as you want, this prevents bunching of the material from the top down. As my jacket is almost to my knees, I only sew the sides to just below the hip bone, this gives me room to put my leg over the saddle when mounting a horse, plus I like the way it looks. Your shirt looks really cool and I wish you much success on your jacket!

My condolences for the grandmother. Good lookin shirt. Nothing cuts the wind like leather. I can see where a buckskin shirt combined with some wool under it might feel pretty well on a cold windy day.

Man, your shirt turned out so good! And I feel you on them needle eyes getting fuzzier... They make 'em WAY smaller too! Harbor Freight just sent out some 25% off coupons, so I went this weekend and bought me a flexible lamp with a big magnifying glass for such as what you're doing. I hope the bulb is one that I can buy, if and when it burns out, but man, now I can SEE SOMETHIN!! That was a smart notion to do the shirt first, since it will be hid under your coat, just in case Jim Bridger or Joe Meek shows up to check on your seamstress work! Did you think about making your neck hole split be a little longer, then having it with a lace, just to get your melon in and out easier? And now you get to do some fancy beadwork!! And then... and then... and then.. Gotta love it when folks like me give you advice that hadn't ever made a shirt before :) Take, care, Mr. Justin!

You can put a insert under the arms . Additional piece of material so the arms are more roomy and flexible .

You did a great job. Especially for not e e having seen a buckskin before. I like the bottom edge too

Try using a mouse sander with course sandpaper to smooth out the skin prior to tanning, while it is dry. It will tan better and look like velvet.

Fine looking shirt there. I would need a whole herd to make one or my big Sasquatch self. 6’5, 350lbs. I like your style. Mite sew a loop on the back so you can back up on a nail and peel it off when you get home.

Brother i know what you mean about those needle holes fishing hooks too. They are getting smaller and fuzzy by the day. Hay i recommend leave the back of shirt long so when you bend over no cold drafts up a fellows backside.

Sandstone rub your finished hide will make it much more supel soft

I'm going to try this have a couple hides salted packed away, have a fresh hide on the garage floor was going to use it a bait until I watched this video... going to clean it and salt it now thanks for sharing and inspiring me to use up the whole deer, also I didn't realize how much hide is needed to make a shirt lol... glad our deer here in Southeast Canada are big cause I need a 3X shirt 😂

I've got enough buckskin for a shirt. I thought about getting a shirt or light jacket from Goodwill, and cut out all the seams so I end up with flat patterns to cut out and sew back together. Anyway great video.

Tanning that buckskin and taking on this project to create this shirt has been a lot of time and labor on your part. It seems to me that the end product turned out very well. The fit is good. I’m sure that the leather will become softer and more comfortable the more that the shirt is worn. I’d leave the bottom of the shirt as is, without adding fringe or even hemming it up. It’s gonna look so good with the matching pants and jacket. One question… who do you protect the buckskin from the weather? - Tennessee Smoky

Old lady from Main here. I did a couple skins from road kills. I got a hard spot on my not smoked hide. I like the white and not the tan. However if it got wet, without oils from the smoke it will shrivel up and turn into dog chewies. I have thought of resoaking it in soap and glycerine, see if I can stretch it better while it is drying. It took so much constant hand pulling for hours to get it stretched right that I couldn't do it anymore. I did buy a chalk and pumice stone to rub on skin and remove any membrane. Would like to do something with it.

Sorry for your family loss but it sounds like it was a life full of life, shirt looks good, but alot of work, i would have got me one of them welders jackets and faked it, i had no idea the fringe had that purpose, see ya next time
