You can often get tripods where the quick release plate has been lost for next to nothing. Making a replacement quick release plate out of wood and a 1/4" bolt.

hot air gunning a glue stick has got to be the most genius thing I've seen in a long time. Also, I really should get out more.

Almost as genius as having voodoo dolls of fellow RU-vidrs. And I know it's dated but I just watched it yesterday.

@rbtpartsman
@rbtpartsman 5 лет назад
I have made several of these over the years. I've picked up various tripods at thrift shops over the years and since people never put the camera attachment piece with the tripod, I've had to make my own. One improvement I've done Matthias is I glue a small piece of thin rubber or foam to the wood, between the wood and the camera, so it protects the camera and reduces any tiny vibration in videos. That rubber, drilled slightly undersized, also holds the bolt and keeps it from falling out of the wood. I also fashioned a small D Ring from thin metal rod and drilled small holes into opposite sides of the 1/4" bolt head to insert the ends of the D Ring into to help tighten the bolt to the camera, making it more like the actual one that would've came with the tripod originally to tighten the bolt to the camera. Your videos are the best on RU-vid !

Hi what I do when I have nothing to tighten the clete screw is hand tighten it but set the clete in an anticlockwise offset angle and then while pressing down on the screw rotate both together and I find doing this I can get just the right tension I need. Hope I have explained this clear. Anyway, I'm not pretending to teach you anything cos you are an innovative engineering genius. I never watch any of your videos without learning something new.

In my "didn't know anything about tripod" days, I purchased a tripod at the flee market for what I thought was a deal. When I tried to use it I realized it didn't have the mounting screw which after a bit of research turned out to be a missing mounting plate. I never got around to making a wood mounting plate out of wood for it, but years after I purchased a brand new tripod, I did get around to drilling a hole or two into it and bolting a small wooden top onto it that is the perfect size for a laptop. I was planning on making some additional mods to use it for a teleprompter stand.

I was able to make a replacement shoe out of Steel Stick epoxy putty, with some old printing press blanket material as a cushion layer. The screw is embedded, so you just spin the whole shoe to thread it on. By the way, if you know any printers, ask them about getting some old press blankets. They are super handy as a work surface, router mat, cutting mat, tons of uses. Super durable canvas-backed rubber sheet. Even Digital presses use a similar material, and it tends to be tackier than the Offset press blankets. (Better for router mat)

Have you ever considered a magnetic mount for your cameras? It would take a pretty strong magnet, but theoretically you could snap the camera to a tripod, and easily move it to a fixed mount on the wall, or to a sprung swing arm, or to a plate on a tool ...
