Howdy y’all, thanks for stopping by! (^^)/ Hopefully there was some helpful advice to be found in this one - I know using CSP has definitely sped up my concept art process, but if any of you have some shortcuts you’d also recommend, please do go ahead and share ‘em here in the comments! (Also if you wanted the link to the free trial to take it for a spin, it can be found up in the description - along with links to the downloadable assets I mentioned!) 👌🏻✨
About the symmetry ruler not affecting every layer- If you put the layers you want into a folder and drag the ruler to the folder, it should apply to all of those layers I learned this myself only a month ago, and it's been really helpful ^^
Hey, 3D animator here, that first poses official name is the a-pose. The t-pose it when the arms are straight across like a t. Both are used for reference when modeling in a 3d program, a-poses are for characters you know are keeping their arms down or low while t poses are used if u either don't know the characters motions yet or the motions require lifting their arms up
Yeah many people are confuse their names with each other calling both a T-pose. It's not a big deal tho, but surely is confusing when you know what pose is what, especially when you asked to draw a "t-posing character", when in reality they wanted a-pose
I personally like to imagine that the original 2010 design was Holly in their teen/tween years, maybe in training. Then the shiny new 2022 design be them all grown up and kickin ass :D
Little tip with the Symmetry ruler, if you right click on just the ruler in the layers, you can set it to apply to all layers. Not just the one the ruler is on :3 Edit: wow this is the most likes I’ve ever gotten on a YT comment. Thanks guys!
How are your characters designs always so good. Every time you design an original character I fall in love with their design and personality and setting. Teach me your ways. Also Holly's old design looks like her goth teen self who used to rob convenience stores and sneak into rock concerts until the Hex organisation found her and gave her a job as a good guy.
Already burned a past free trial, but this helped me officially pull the trigger on a full subscription. Always love seeing your work, and a process video was so inspirational! You’re my favorite RU-vid art celebrity, and my favorite queer illustrator!
OK but this seems like a TOTAL coincidence but she ended up looking almost exactly like one of the main characters of a comic I'm working on. Gives me tons of inspiration and faith in my art skills. Great vid!
man you make me wanna ditch procreate for any character/comic things LMAO Thank you sm for the informational/techy stuff you include - its always SO HELPFUL for me bc those menus get so overwhelming!
i absolutely love how you kept her original saturated hair colors instead of completely changing them. it really proves that if you have a good design, saturated colors can still look amazing
Fun fact: it is actually called a turnaround! Or specifically I don’t know if it has other names too, but in college all of my professors called it a turnaround when you have a front/back/side like that as they were all current or former pros so yeah! Also I think someone commented it already but yeah, you technically drew an A-pose in the first one with is used a lot and (I believe) interchangeably with T-pose unless you’re designing a 3D character who’ll have to lift their arms above their head. (That’s just cause 3D models literally deform and warp with movement and moving over 90 or 180 degrees on such a scrunchy-pully joint from neutral is near impossible to make look right) Sorry if this is ramble-y or rude, but thanks for all the amazing art you share with us! I adore your style so much and it always reminds me why I love this medium if I’m in an art slump!!!
I kinda liked the Denis the Menus x Hot Topic outfit, seemed kinda like a “trying to blend into regular society” outfit that they’d wear to not be suspected bu the people they were spying on
Don't mind me dying laughing at the fact that the original image with the name Holly was trans colors- Love the video mate! Always excited to see what you've got prepared each video
Man these are cool looking! Also, if you find the name of the tool you used swirl pattern PLEASE share bc that looks so cool. This character came out looking awesome!
I had a character named 'Everything Girl' who I made when I was about 7-8 years old. Their new name is Emily or 'Stripe' as they are a superhero, and their power is that they have like a magical ribbon on their wrist that they can use to manipulate (??) in the air kinda like extra arms. They can use any ribbons nearby so they carry a ton with them at all times. (Also the villain in the story changed from a fish centaur thing to a weird combo of all animals i could think of, to a hot anime boy who can shape-shift so uhmmmm)
I was just gifted an old huion tablet that my friend wasn’t using anymore that Ive been using CSP with the last few days, so this is super inspiring and helpful to see what I can do with the program 😎
I agree, it feels like far too long. I am every time amazed watching you create these awesome character designs. Congrats for winning the contest, if I am not too late for that. Could you maybe make a new Disney & Dragons video, maybe? I would love to see your take on one of the _Encanto_ characters.
This is definitely me, immediately pausing this video and yeeting myself to the asset library to download that fill tool. I see infinite possibilities thank you SO MUCH.
I've always had a thing for characters with blue and red looks, which has only intensified after Kamen Rider Build debuted in 2017. I absolutely adore Holly's look, from head to toe. I can actually visualize how sick that outfit would look in real life. Thank you for all of the tips. I've hesitated for years to try digital art, and seeing all of the resources in Clip Studio makes it feel less intimidating. I should give it a go in the future.
Your character designs are always so crisp, they really show a sense of clarity and purpose that's really inspiring for my own work :) also I can definitely yell your tips about the tools you use will be helpful! another good vid as always
I learned so much from this video, not even just tools from CSP and general guidelines, but studying your anatomy techniques and other tiny thigns you do so fast, it's probably muscle memory for you. This has been the most educational speedpaint video I've ever watched. Thank you so so much, I'm noticing huge improvements in my art already just from studying your art. Keep it up, and thanks for the tips and advice!
I just love the logic for the original design like “Hmmm a secret agent? Let’s make her hair super attention grabbing and slap on a bright striped shirt on her!” 😭
The first version of Holly reminds me of a teen that just got into the whole spiel of being a spy.. maybe early training days where there are no uniforms that are given out. The second one looks like Holly has been a few years in service as spy.. probably around age 28-29.
Now I wanna make proper ref sheets for my characters. The last one I made for my OCs was July of last year with all 6 of them just kinda staring blankly facing forward. It will still be useful for all their heights (until I make another one with more active poses), but I need to give them all separate, proper refs. Especially considering one of my characters does have a design on the back of their jacket that I rarely draw because I would have to skim through my sketchbook to find it. All very useful tips!
I got clip studio recently when I got my own drawing tablet, and I didn't even realize they had 3d models available! This is going to help me so much, I'm glad I decided to watch this lol
aaah it's so nice to see your videos early! i'm having a snack at the moment and i always enjoy getting to sit back and relax with one of your videos :) your voice is very soothing and your art is so pretty! thank you for the lovely vid :D
Every time I see another artist using Clip Studio I learn a new trick that could've saved me so much time. I love how communal it is with everyone programming special functions and brushes that you can just have for free. I realize this sounds like an advertisement lol but seriously I love this program.
this is the first video of yours that i've watched, and i'll definitely be using these! i'm currently designing alternate outfits for all my ocs and everything you said in the video was very helpful. thanks so much!
I've been so busy too! Ever since I had to do a bunch of drawing for my finals my brain and hand has completely made me burnout on creating art and stuff, which SUCKS because this summer is supposed to be for working and working on my artwork to improve myself. It's going to be hard, but with one of my favorite artists coming back, my inspiration is up again! My hand is still really tired....but I'll figure it out!
I've been trying to get some characters drawn for awhile now and I'm happy that your video came out. I has given me the inspiration to find some good designs
The sheer amount of stuff CSP is capable of is incredible. I'm still learning how to use the program myself, and I definitely learned something new. Especially the lighthouse thing, I had no *idea* that's what that was for.
I absolutely adore your art and vibes, you’re really amazing at creating interesting stories and characters and pleasing designs. What I’ve been wanting to comment on as well tho is that you seem to consistently draw arms as rather short, usually basically the only fault in anatomy in your art - see, the elbows seem to line up with the end of the ribs, while most real life people’s elbows line up with the top of their hip bones. And finally, thank you so much for creating and putting so much effort in genuinely entertaining and inspiring videos and sharing so much helpful advice ❤️
this character is giving me fruity vibes and i love it very much. very pleasing color palette as well! i can’t stress enough how much i love your art style and your character concepts/designs!!
Oh my goodness, I’m so glad I found your channel. Super helpful tips AND fantastic art?? Amazing. Also I love your hands, they make me happy. Have a nice day :D
I was literally looking through my RU-vid recommended just to watch a video to help with my anxiety and i just found this video. im glad it came out so quickly and it's amazing so thanks. :D
Just a small tip, if you also want an eraser that also follows the symmetry ruler, chose an eraser and click the enable snapping box and it will do that. Just go to the sub tool detail and go to correction and it should be at the bottom.
Me and my partner first discovered you from your Disney DnD series and immediately subscribed. Your videos are always so wonderful from the art to the editing to your commentary. This one especially gave me some helpful advice and encouragement for my first real webcomic. Thank you!
Your videos are amazing! they're really too great to autoplay and just listen to it while I just draw away. The new character design looks great! Amazing video as always!!!
the ruler tool is super handy! also for anyone wondering- if you want the eraser to erase on both sides / more depending on the number of 'sides' of the symmetrical ruler, under the eraser settings > corrections > enable snapping and check the box it help to not only erase something from one spot and realize it's still there on any of the others if it get in the way of other tools you can add 'enable snapping' to the smaller setting display for the eraser and check it on only when you're using the sym ruler
thank you for this!! I study character design sheets to help with my own but honestly I think I needed more, and this video was it! I just needed to see a good technique demo using a program I actually use.
I am planning or redesigning some characters of mine, so this was quite helpful in some way or another. A the very least, it gave me ideas, and a head start on the poses. Thanks! 👍
Honestly the original design kind of made me think of like a younger Holly and the other is her as an adult. Very cool to look at the differences! The new design looks so cool!
only 2 minutes in but this is SENDING me bc i also had an oc when i was 9 with bright blue and red striped hair who could use every kind of magic,,,,, she had an emo boyfriend and she lived on a private island with her family bc she was mega rich and cool and everyone loved her obviously. also she was a mermaid, shapeshifter, vampire, cat girl and could fly
Watching this video definitely helped when it came to understanding character sheets! I tend to just do front views which yields... results but not the fun kind. Or the consistent kind. I will say though, the way you went with Holly shouldn't have surprised me but it did. Obviously you know your setting better, though I do feel like Holly's original design *could've* worked, clothing-wise if one was going the Civillian-Disguise spy route. It's just plain enough that just about anyone could fit the description, especially if she DID buy it at like a hot topic or something. Though, your redesign does make a lot more sense and it is your character so I can't say I know the world better than you do
Your work, as well as your voiceover vids really inspire me as an art student. I legit wanna make speedpaint-y stuff like you someday. Seems like so much fun. 🦊
This was a really lovely video to watch! Lots of solid tips and advice, and seeing the new design is absolutely cool & lovely! Another tip I would like to throw out there is if your character has any unique clothing patterns, you might want to considering adding a complete tile of it to your reference sheet!
Omg this was such perfect timing, tldr i am doing some portofolio work for animation college and i really needed this refresher 🙌 always fun having the chance to draw along with your videos
Facinating to me that this character design low key registers to me as a boy???? Simply bc she has those rly bold red/blue colours !!!! I don't think i've ever seen that done for a female character ever ??????? More bold colour choices for girl characters please i love it !! ♡♡
i tend to call the 'turnaround sheets' concept sheets or just ref sheets, cause thats what they were used for in danganronpa (which is where i SOMEHOW first discovered those types of reference sheets)
One idea you could use for the jacket, shamelessly swiped from the "Detroit Free Zone" books by Rachel Aaron (a really good Cyber Fantasy series. "Cyber Fantasy" is basically dragons, wizards, gods, etc in a Cyberpunk-esque future world): The main character in those books, Opal Yong-ae, owned a poncho that served as a magic shield. It reduced the damage she takes from spells and magical backlash. You could have it that all members of Hex are given one of those jackets because spy work is always dangerous. (I'm sure Rachel Aaron isn't the first Fantasy author to have something similar, so I don't feel too bad suggesting you use the concept lol)
I really like your style (I just found your channel today) it reminds me of Pokémon swords designs. This vid was really helpful so thanks for inspiration and advice!
You might already know this, but If you want to quickly switch in and out of using the symmetry tool without having to turn the ruler off or delete it, you can use the little buttons at the top with the pen and the triangle, half circle and square respectively. The triangle toggles snap to ruler (including straight, curved, and "figure" rulers), the half-circle is snap to special ruler (including symmetry rulers, perspective rulers and parallel line rulers) and the rectangle is snap to grid. Hope that's of use!!
nice timing, I'm going to make new character sheets for artfoght this year! I'm not even paid by clip studio and I gotta say it's genuinely the best purchase I've made. Also seeing your old art really sent me on a nostalgia kick, I really wanna redraw a bunch of stuff now haha.
Hey I just found your channel I wanna say thank you for the character design tips plus your design ideas for Hex sound really cool hope to see a comic about it one day
