How to make a simple book using an old book cover, a scrap of cloth and recycled paper. I am using mine as a commonplace book which is a place to record quotes, ideas, words, poems and other interesting things I learn from you lovely people. ❤️

I have a stack of envelopes with notes and other tings I want to remember. My husband will find an old book for me at our library book sale. I love this so much! Love that you are a librarian. My favorite place growing up.

Thank you! I really miss libraries living where I do, it's an hour's drive to the nearest one and then of course mostly books in French and I prefer to read in English. When I lived in England, I went to the library every week. ❤️

How funny! I am also a junk journaler and currently I am making a kind of commoplace book made from a huge gift bag. The cover, however, has a slow stitched piece very much inspired by you. The largest cloth piece is onion dyed. When I have a dye bath left over, I put it in a small container in my fridge. For later use. So when you said: in case you have dye bath sittning around I had to laugh out loud. Of course I do, doesn’t everybody? Well, I guess not 🤣 OMG what’s wrong with me 🤪🤣🤣 And I have a contribution to your book: potato in Czech is BRAMBORY 😘 In Swedish: POTATIS I have lived in Sweden my whole adult life but I have my origins in Prague, Bohemia 🥰 So I can proudly state that I indeed am a bohemian 😉❤️🙏🏼

If there's something wrong with you, I have it too 😂 thank you for the Czech, I didn't have that one yet, I already have the Swedish written in my book. 😉 I don't think I ever met an actual Bohemian before so how lovely that the first one I meet has dye baths hanging around the place. 😉❤️

I keep a book like this and in fact have just recently made a video sharing it. I call mine my ‘mindfulness journal’ and a couple of people commented saying it was a commonplace book. However, in the spirit of ‘you do you’...I rather like ‘mindfulness journal’ so will continue to call it that😊. Your book is lovely.

I have been keeping a commonplace journal for 2 years now - this is second year and I thought I would do a contents page.... Naturally I haven't done that yet 🤦 but the way you do it with the tabs appeals to me much more! It was a lovely surprise to see this pop up while I am waiting for a delivery. 😊 I am still catching up with the content since I am late to the party that is k3n clothtales! Love from Scotland ☺️

Love your commonplace book. I need a new one and this is just the ticket. I like to make lists, so will include a tab of lists. After my mom passed, I found a notebook of lists she had made. One list was titled “things I bought that I ended up not liking”. It made me laugh!

This was a nice surprise video, I lovemaking books and journals. I nearly died of stress the first time I deconstructed a book ! But I was so pleased with the results especially the natural dyed papers and their crinkly feel, that I can now justify it ! 😂😂thank you as always for your inspiration. ☺️🥰❤

Thank you for sharing the making of a common place book. I definitely need to make one as I write things on odd pieces of paper and then manage to put them in the rubbish. I love to hear your dogs and cat playing as you craft. My two dogs hang around me when I'm stitching, etc, and often bring me a toy to throw for them or manage to leap onto my lap.

What a beautifully easy creative book, this is what I am going to make for my stitched work with writing. I will use water colour paper for the stitched work and tea dyed paper for writing...thank you so much for sharing this video.

I love the idea of a common place book / journal. I'm forever writing notes, reminders, new words, etc, on scrappy bits of paper, receipts, and used envelopes 😂 FYI the word for potato in Croatian is krumpir 🥔

In my first lessons making books, the instructor gave every student a small cardboard box. We draped our signatures over an edge of the box and punched the sewing holes “convexly.” It was well supported and not as shifty as when you hold the signature in one hand and punch with the other. Not as lovely as a book cradle, but a good quick and dirty hack.

I love this. My son is a book lover and collector of information. I am going to make one for his birthday. I was making a journal for him filled with excerpts from works written in the author’s handwriting. I think the combined contents will make a unique gift for him.

You've sent me into research mode as I'd never heard of a commonplace book. Very interesting indeed. I use notebooks all the time but haven't ever made one myself.. I've a word for you though.. Deng jai.... Which is Cantonese for those little stools of the type you hop onto to reach the top shelves etc.. It's pronounced just about the way I've written it ☺️

I too always add more pages than I intend! And sometimes I have a book and think: “oh, it’s too chunky, I’m going to take out a few pages”. I start all the process and end up with exactly the same amount of pages 😂 or even more 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️😂 I love your book and I also love to have one of those around, although only recently did I learn their name in English 💙🧡💚🩷🤎🩵💜🤍💛❤️

Yes! I had only made five signatures which was already chunky, then when I was binding, I had two holes left over so had to make two more 😂 but I left it overnight under a heavy book and now it closes flat. Nearly 😉😁❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This is such a wonderful idea - I usually do Coptic binding but I love this method. I’ll have to try it! Very clear and easy to understand 😊😊

Love the idea of this as an external brain ❤I never section mine because they don't get filled at equal rates and I don't want to have to carry around more than one, but of course that makes it much easier to find what you want later -- which is kind of the point 😂 lovely book!

I have a planner that I try to put all this stuff in. My daughter named it the brain, so now when someone mentions something I will say, " oh wait, let me put that in my brain". On a side note Americans also call potatoes "spuds" at times, and I can not figure out how to respond back to comments, but you said " hi cous" which I would respond back with " what's buzzin cousin".❤

Arriving late at the party, but just what I needed as a substitute for Coptic binding. For your potato word collection, potato is peruna in Finnish, potatis in Swedish.

I love "my external brain"😊 Please let us know when you have filled it and need to make another! It looks big now, but too soon they are full. I have inherited several books that do not interest me and are "frail", but so far I can not remake them to reuse them. It seems to be a "when you are ready" kind of thing doesn't it. I feel like one day this internet thing is going to break down and all the online stuff will be history, but I will still have my reference books. Strange, I know. Just can not hold my cell phone or tablet or laptop and get the same warm feeling I do from holding and reading a book, especially a book the precious loving hands held before me.

If the first signatur is done, you can place your template from the outside and mark the points. That will make it easier.😉

I just finished watching this video showing how to turn an old book into a Commonplace Book. I was wondering if you have written anything in it by now (6/12)? I have a box full of unused journals. I love making them but I don't use them.

Hello Virginia yes I have written in it a lot, though I do have journals that I haven't used or only put a few things in. I don't think personally that there is anything wrong with viewing journals as finished objects in their own right. It's an expression of your creativity, a piece of art that doesn't have to be used or useful. 😊♥️

Lovely video, lovely book. Have you watched Rachel on Roxycreations? She uses old books and saves, repairs, replaces old spines to make journals. I have used her methods and found them very successful. I thought you might find her methods interesting. ❤❤❤

Yes, I love watching Rachel, I so admire her way of creating, and thank you. Regarding the word 'quote' you had me wondering so I looked it up. The OED says it is a noun and has been in use as such since the 16th century. Indeed as an abbreviated version of 'quotation'. 😁❤️
