Making a Dog Collar

Although many of our videos are machining-focused, this time, we deviate towards a more artisanal project. In this video, Alastair makes a collar for our workshop mascot, Kasia. Using a tag he made previously, he uses metalworking techniques to manufacture a ring from stainless steel, which he uses to attach the brass tag to the collar. The ring is cold-forged from wire and then silver soldered using a blowtorch. The collar itself is made from leather, using our own shop-made leather working tools (pricking iron or stitch punch, knife and awl).

We skipped showing it here but the collar tag was engraved using a Gravograph engraver. If you are interested, you can briefly see it in action here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LZLQ5pPqGF0.html Let us know if this is something you would like us to cover in more detail in the future.

Seeing alternatives to stamped numbers in metal would be great. Thanks for the content you create.

The project and your video of it are both elegant understatement.

Hi John, it's not something we've heard of but might warrant further investigation. Our approach is to pull the mill backwards (with RH flutes) so that the helix angle keeps the flute pushed into the guide. Pull and rotate at the same time by holding the large graduated dial at the back for more sensitivity. With a bit of practice this does work really well. Make sure the tip of the guide is rounded, hardened and polished also. The only concern with PTFE is its very low modulus - it might effect the stiffness of the system. I hope this answers your question.
