Often, we woodworkers make boxes the same size over and over again, especially if or when we sell them. I designed this dovetail guide to replicate the same-sized dovetails to the four corners of the box we make and make dozens of boxes if we have a batch production run of them.
You need to lay out only once, no matter how many dovetails you make and the dovetails will even be interchangeable. Additionally, you can vary the dovetail sizes proportionally by sliding the workpiece up and down the guide for larger or smaller dovetails too.
I hope you enjoy this little nugget!

Of the hundreds of dovetail videos on YT, this is probably one of the best. Bravo, Mr. Sellers.

Yet again such a simple idea, but brilliant at the same time. And the next time I have multiple dovetails to cut I will use this method. Thanks Paul

If only I'd had you as my shop teacher in 1965, instead of 'Whacker Wright' who always had a piece of half inch square rod to 'Wack' you on the arse with, I might have actually been able to make a decent dovetail joint!! 😅😅😅 I haven't been game to try to make one since. Thank you Paul. It is so simple and elegant. 👏👏

Thanks Paul. This past Christmas I made a number of boxes of the same size. I tried ganging up to cut the dovetails to "speed" things up and was disappointed with the results. I will keep this in mind on future projects where I want a set box size for rapid duplication. I really like the elegant simplicity of this as well as your recent end grain shooting board.

If you make that guide make sure to mark which side is supposed to be the face and which is back for when you cuts aren’t exactly equidistant.

"Guide us not wearing out unless I waggle the saw around a whole lot" I have never before today heard someone use the word "waggle", and I must say, it had me crying laughing! 🤣🤣 Thank you for the unexpected but surely welcomed vocabulary lesson Paul😊😂 And this goes without saying but I'll continue to do so, THANK YOU GOOD SIR for sharing, teaching, and passing on your in depth/large knowledge of the awesome craft that is woodworking. Since I started just a year ago, you have been one of,if not THE biggest inspiration of mine. Thank you for everything Paul! Edit.... I cannot wait to try this cool looking guide method, it looks wicked neat haha

Paul.... Just confirming... though you could offset the guide for each different board width it's probably best to make a separate jig for each board width. Correct? Your thoughts?

As a complete beginner i noticed you used a dovetail guide to make your dovetail guide, im so confused... also what is the function of the sacrificial peice of wood? Is it just easier to cut square across two rather than the one?
@SoundsToBlowYourMind
@SoundsToBlowYourMind Год назад
He has videos from a few years ago showing how to make the smaller dovetail guide that he uses to mark out the lines to make this guide! The other piece of wood just allows you to mark a longer line to align the saw with, making it easier to see that the saw is square to the wood.
