My name is Matt Estlea and I’m a Woodworker from Basingstoke, England. My aim is to make your woodworking less s***.
I come from 5 years of TRAINING at Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford, 5 years of experience WORKING at Axminster Tools and Machinery in Basingstoke, and 3 years TEACHING both day classes and evening classes at Rycotewood Furniture Centre. All while trying to get this RU-vid thing off the ground.

Drill 12 mm holes centered on the corners of the rebate in your table where the sacrificial insert will fit - makes removing the insert much easier. Also, make the insert large enough that it can be rotated when tattered. Third hint - place the insert off-center from your pillar drill centerpoint - so when you drill, you are not drilling into the center of your insert, but rather slightly off to one side. This allows you to rotate the insert to expose a fresh flat surface. I think you will really enjoy having a pillar drill that's set up for woodwork rather than metal work. I'm loving your videos.

Hey Matt, love the channel! Just a suggestion though, instead of a square bit of replaceable material, give that piece a 90 degree turn and make it a “diamond” shape. Doing this will make it so your sacrificial surface will last 4 times longer. Line it up so the drill bits hit the corner, and when the corner is used up, you simple lift it out and rotate the piece within the cutout until all four corners are used and abused to your satisfaction! When it’s used, simply make another sacrificial piece to fit the cut out and you have 4 more corners to use up! Keep up the great work!

Hey Matt,you could plug your dust collector into a socket on the wall behind you could switch you extractor on and off from there, just leave the extractor switch on all the time.Good video by the way.

The Extractor has a no-volt switch... as soon as you turn it off on the extension, the switch on the machine resets (so that when you turn the extension back on, the machine stays off). Sensible safety feature on power tools... bit of a pain on the dust extractor.

Suggest you make yourself an all around mallet so you can pound things together instead of using your fist. Avoid all injuries when possible.

Surely you're not suggesting wasting perfectly good OSB for a sacrificial piece. That should be saved for fine furniture! Using OSB for anything less than heirloom quality pieces would be wasteful. Come to your sense man! /s

You may want to consider drilling some holes to fit those Veritas hold downs you have. Your 3/4” plywood should accommodate that well.

Unless you offset the round piece there's a risk of it starting to rotate, at least when using forstner bits or bigger drills. If you manage to get the whole a size you can drill out with a hole saw it would be very easy to get replacement parts(!)

Sleepydog if the assembly is not eccentric or like you say offset.... we are drilling always on the same place.... Eccentric assembly and keep rotating as it gets too “drilled”.... and doesn’t have to be big.... I say by experience...! Thxs!

I plan to do something similar. But offset the square to the bottom left or right. Then just turn the square when needed to get four sacrificial pieces in one without it turning on its own like a round one would. (ps - nice vid and editing)

A square sacrificial bit (mine is 100 x 100mm or 4" x 4", 12mm deep made of OSB or any other scrap material) works very well if off center to the side and font/back… you can 'reuse' it 8 times - 4 times by side with bits up to 50mm. Mine is held by double-sided tape underneath with enough play on the sides for easy removal and to prevent the need to cut precisely to the cut out hole dimensions)

My drill press table has a round insert, you get a lot more mileage out of a round insert than you do out of a square insert! Because mine is 18mm I can flip it over & use the other side too. Also you can re-use each hole almost indefinitely so you virtually never have to bin an insert.

I am wondering the same thing. Humidity is a major problem for me in my workshop. I hope Matt answers this.

At Curious Goblin we use a dehumidifier at the workshop. We plug a timer in the socket and programmed it to work during the night, which is also the hours of bigger humidity. When you see spiders and spiders’ webs around is a good sign. They only appear when the space is dry

I think the idea is that he's unlikely to generate so much dust (and have it stay on the table, rather than on the piece) that the rebate gets completely clogged...

This seems very similar to my drill press table, except, my sacrificial piece to prevent blowout is circular (so i can rotate it many times to reveal new surface before having to replace it), and I rounded all the corners of mine because I am accident prone.

Do not use that bobing sander attachment it puts side force on your drill press spindle and can damage it causing you to have a wobbly chuck. That's just my opinion though.

Looks like a good design, but a circular waste block and side rails would have been sufficient under the table instead of three sided. With that tight fit, it shouldn't slide anywhere.

Because making is more satisfying than buying 😛. Also having more metal surfaces is horrid first thing on a winter morning, the wood never feels too cold 😂

Focus Focus Focus... Please learn to film in focus ! When you show something with your finger if you don't focus on the thing you are showing then that scene lose all it's purpose ! Same when you drawing ! Same with using a tool ! Focus on the subject of matter, that's photography 101 guys, you can't call yourself pro video content producer if you can't do that ! Without your proper focus what you do is not teaching woodworking, it's just a entertainment show with someone mimicking woodworking. Not be able to focus on any actual woodworking stuf make those video useless when it comes to woodworking. That's just the sad truth guys, several people in the past told you about that in the comments of previous videos but it seams like you have done nothing to improve on that. You have to sort that out !

@@dons8365 What you my have missed is that in the last video Matt personally asked for feedback on the new filming style. And that's just what this is. We have been several people pointing at the focusing problem but nothing have been done to improve it so i was just trying to emphasis on the importance of proper focusing. Now Mister "i call hater anyone not being a nice little blind fan" if you want to answer to comments, why don't you now read the actual comment and make us know what part in what i say is not true ? Truth is not mean, telling truth is not hate, that's just what it is, face it. If you think one thing i said there is not true then get constructive in your critics, please make us know.

You know this isn't a movie studio? or a television studio, right? You're comparing RU-vid videos to those that are made in studios, with a budget, with the ability to run multiple takes if needed. You're not comparing apples and oranges. This is not a studio production, it's often a 1 person crew for camera, lights, content, editing, not to mention the actual building of the project. The reality is the RU-vid is an entertainment avenue, not pure instruction. You're following people because they are making content, but that doesn't guarantee any level of training, competency, or expertise. RU-vid is a platform that allows people to put content out there, good, bad, or otherwise. I do agree with Don's comment, you have an awful lot of "expertise" in the subject, for someone who doesn't produce any videos. Maybe you just can't get them in focus....
