If you are interested in the bevel gears that I used for this modification, you can find them here www.amazon.ca/....
I purchased all the metal for this project at the Metal Supermarket. www.metalsuper...
And lastly, the shaft collars were purchased here www.princessau...
Don't forget to like and subscribe and as always, thank you so much for tuning in to the show.

You're a genius! The bevel gear modification is perfect. The combination of my drill press table and my bad back make changing the table height a literal pain. I'm definitely going to try your design,

I think calling me a genius is a bit of a stretch Jim. I'm sure that I am not the only one who has ever done this modification. Either way, if you have back pain, the way I do, this modification is a must. This is one of the best things I have ever done as a modification and I only wish I had done it sooner. Thanks for tuning in to the show and taking the time to leave a comment. I appreciate your support.

I built the Drill press table got my floor standing drill press very much like yours(Not quite as wide but big enough for my needs). It includes a slide out waste insert due to the high likelihood that I will drilling into it. Could not get the gears to function properly. The gears would always slip due to the pressure needed to lift the table. My solution was to use a coupler to extend the rod used to raise the table to beyond the end of the table side eliminating the need for gears. Now the lift crank is easy to reach and comfortable for raising and lowering the table. Thanks again for posting your drill press table videos. They got me motivated to get this long overdue project done.

Glad that you liked the series John. I've been wanting to do this show for a while but just didn't have a need for a new drill press table as my old one was just fine. New drill press = new drill press table. So the show was born. I'm glad that you liked it and that you like the height adjustment modification. It really has made a world of difference. A very useful mod that's well executed and explained. I saw a very similar one in one of the woodworking journals' YuTube video. Now the question is don't you want to mod the table tightening mechanism to the front as well?
@acutabove_woodworkings

The tightening mechanism on mine isn't that difficult to reach and isn't the same knuckle buster that the height adjustment was, so while I did consider moving it to the front, I deemed it unnecessary for my application. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

I did this modification ages ago Steve and I have never had the handle get in my way. In fact, in my opinion, it still stands today as the best modification I have EVER done on a tool. I will be doing it on every drill press I every own because it is just so awesome. No more reaching for the height adjustment. No more smashing your knuckles on the drill press table as you are adjusting. No more twinging your back while reach under the table to get at the adjustment. Just an all around awesome modification. I recommend it to everyone. Thanks for tuning in to the show sir.

I got a third blade, did your sand paper trick and got a whet stone and rounded the back. Finished last 90% of the cuts with no problems. Was it the Beatles that recorded I'm a believer? Count me in. Hey Kenny. Just wondering, what brand of clamping element, I think that's what it's called, are you using on your bench at the 7:49 mark? Do you like them? Are they for 20mm holes? Here are a few extra ideas if anyone cares. Use some nylon washers along with the stop collars. Also, get some 9/16 bearings and mount them in a metal or wooden plate that can be adjusted fully. The make your though holes just a tad bigger. On the front, maybe add another washer to cover the larger hole. It would make more work but easier to adjust and aline.just a thought though.

Hello Kenny, Great video and explanation. Question, Have you think on installing the same mechanism to the lock bolt to secure the high of the table? I think it is important the used of such feature as well since any time I started the drill press, the table move. When it is locked, the table doesn't. Do you think this method can be apply to that bolt? Any thoughts? Regards. AG
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 года назад
I can still access the table's lock down with the drill press table attached. I did consider extending the locking bolt but didn't really consider using the bevel gears. Possibly just extending the existing lock down rod to extend past the left edge of the table. You can get more torque that way. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

Thanks for the kind words on the show Barb. I haven't heard from you in a while and I'm glad to see that you are still around as a viewer. As for the clamp....it's awesome. I have a commercially made one (Veritas) that I love and the one that you see behind the drill press is a shop made version that I constructed during the ABS plastic builds on the show. It squares up the frames nicely and is completely customizable to whatever needs you have. From small frames to large ones, this clamp does it all and does it well. You don't need ABS plastic to make it and you can, in fact, make it from wood if you want. Here's the link to the show in case you are interested in making your own version. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lVeBlRzexK8.html Thanks for tuning in this week. @acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 2 года назад
Brian, that tightening mechanism can be moved in the same fashion as the raising crank. If that doesn't suit you, you can always extend the bar for tightening and have it come out the side, beyond the drill press table. I would have extended mine but show real estate just wouldn't allow for the extension. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in and good luck on your modification.

How do you lock the table in place?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings Год назад
I am assuming that you mean how it is held in place on the original steel drill press table. In part one, starting around the 5 minute mark, I demonstrate exactly how it is held in place using threaded inserts and male jig knobs. If you are referring to locking the table down once you get it set to the height that you wish, the original locking hardware is still intact and still functional. It was never changed. I hope this helps, but if not, feel free to ask more questions. Thanks for tuning in.

ay reason you didn't simply extend the rod to the right rear of the table. keep it out of the way in front of working area.
@acutabove_woodworkings

The front is way more accessible than the back. By extending the rod out to the right rear of the table, I am still having to reach around the drill press table and work in awkward positions to raise the table. Relocating the crank to the front was the best modification I've ever done and the crank has never gotten in the way. I hope this answers your question. Thanks for tuning in.

Kenny, this by far is the best part of this entire build. One of the reasons I enjoy watching your builds so much is the clever ideas you come up with to solve problems. If I never had a good enough reason to build this project this final addition would be it. On my existing drill press table I hate having to reach around it to turn the handle. When you built the table I thought to myself how much I would like to extend it back along the sides of the column but that would have even made it harder to use the handle. Great solution my friend.

Hi Kenny! I am intrigued by your moving the lifting mechanism to the front. I have the Nova drill press and installed the Woodpecker table which would cause the handle to hit the table. Long story short, my solution does not work well. Your solution would allow me to use the original handle (don't ask). So, I also saw the ShopSmith version where they also moved the clamping control. In any event, I found a gear with 1/2" bore which is good for the Nova but it has 28 teeth. Would 28 teeth make it harder or easier to crank? And, would a larger diameter make it easier? If you don't know, just let me know and I'll do more research. By the way, I had no idea I was dealing with a celebrity. Do you have a "regular" job as well? I am thinking so since you have not pursued monetizing your videos and I think are leaving tons of money on the table each year. Am looking forward to Tuesdays now after going through a lot of PB videos and seeing many interesting Tuesday shows. Regards, Bill
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 года назад
To be 100% honest here Bill, I'm not sure about the tooth count. Because you aren't gearing down or up, I don't think the tooth count would make a difference as long as you get a smooth transition between the two bevel gears. As for the monetization, for years I never monetized the show and then, the show started to cost me extra money and it was a decision to monetize or quit producing it. I went with the monetizing so that the show could pay for itself. This is nothing more than my hobby and I work a full time job of over 40 hours a week and then film and woodwork on the weekends. So I guess basically, I hold down two jobs. My regular day job and my show. LOL. Thanks for tuning in sir. Good luck on your modification.

@@acutabove_woodworkings Two things, you should link up with Amazon and other suppliers as an influencer. It would only require you putting a few links below when you are using things and it would either provide more support for your shop or perhaps some income. I think you are leaving a lot of money on the table right now. Also, I am thinking that when I saw you raising your table and WoodSmith raising theirs, the table was kind of jerky going up. I realize it is not a huge deal but I am thinking that a bigger gear on the output shaft from the table versus a smaller gear coming from the handle would give a better experience. Say 2 to 1 output shaft to handle. I would have to spin the handle twice as much but the torque and effort would be less. If I get this going I'll either brag or confess about how it turns out. 'o) I also want to move the lock forward. Wish me luck. What is it you do at your regular job, if you don't mind telling. Bill

Brilliant!! I've always had the same problem, but just dealt with it. Now, in addition to doing this modification, I'm wondering if I can do something similar to control the locking collar (the one that holds it all in place once you've adjusted the height)? I bet that could be done, too. Thanks, Kenny! Super project! :-)
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 5 лет назад
My original plan Norm, was to extend that mechanism and put it out on the far left of the drill press, eliminating the need to reach under to lock the height down. Unfortunately for me, space restrictions in a small shop, make the extension of the locking handle next to impossible because other tools were getting in the way (that big yellow tool chest just to name one) and blocking the operation of the locking handle. The idea is still in my head and I'm sure that at some point in time, you will see it on an Alternative Tuesdays episode of the show. Thanks for tuning in and for the kind words on the show.

When you first started this drill press table, my big concern was raising and lowering the table. This video is a great solution for making table height adjustment convenient. I may have to build your version of this table now. A second consideration is the clearance between the fence and the drill chuck handle. I had to make an adjustment in the fence height to allow the drill chuck handle to clear the fence on my current table. Thanks for very informative and useful content.
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 5 лет назад
On my old drill press fence Tom, I had a 1/2 circle cutout to allow the chuck to come all the way down to the surface of the table without interfering with the fence. I found over the years of using it, that when drilling smaller pieces, there wasn't enough fence support and I almost always had to place a sub fence over my existing one to fill that gap. On this build, I decided to go with a solid fence and when I have a situation where the fence might get in the way of the chuck, I place sacrificial boards on the table to raise the stock that I am drilling. I still get fence support this way and the the chuck never contacts the fence. Thanks for tuning in this week and for taking the Time to leave me a comment. I appreciate your support.

Excellent instructions as usual, Kenny. I've got the same DP as you and I'm in the planning stages of making the table. I'll be using your design with a couple of modifications. Thus far, I've been getting an education on metals. What kind of steel did you use for the shaft? As you know, there are a bunch of them.... I'm a bit leery of filing out the metric gear like you did to fit the 9/16" shaft. Woodsmith has a similar plan to yours but they use plastic gears which would be easier to drill out. Think it's worth it? I'll probably buy the Woodpeckers fence for this project because of the integrated dust collection. Thanks again for posting and keep up the good work! Mark
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 3 года назад
The steel in the project is cold rolled steel rod Mark. It's held up really well. As for filing out the gear, it's still going strong as well. I'm not so sure that I would trust the plastic gears. This mechanism takes a lot of abuse and I'm not so sure that the plastic gears would be able to stand the test of time with that abuse. I guess there's only one way to find out. If you decide to go with the plastic gears, you'll have to report back and let me know how they worked out. Thanks for tuning in sir and good luck on your build.

Hi Kenny. I really love your content and your approach. You are a thoughtful teacher. Could you tell me exactly which metal rod you used for this? I'm having a hard time locating the exact shaft size needed for this project. I have the same Drill Press as you. Thank you in advance.

Hi Frank. Thanks for contacting me. I just purchased a cold rolled, 9/16" diameter steel rod. It was actually a little too large so I had to file out the middle of the bevel gears to make it work but it was the closest that I could find. The cold rolled works just fine though. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show Frank and taking the time to leave the kind words. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Loved the 3 part series and your explanations and ingenuity but don't most drill press tables have a sacrificial or replaceable insert. Aren't you going to dig up the top?
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 4 года назад
I cannot argue with you John as to what most drill press tables have. I have seen many and every one has had something to that effect. For me personally, I am not a fan of the inserts and my work style always allows for a sacrificial board to be placed underneath my work, so that my drill press table remains intact. If you are one that likes the inserts, please feel free to modify the design to incorporate one. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and it's a great idea. It just doesn't work for me, that's all. Thanks for tuning in to the show and taking the time to leave the kind words. I truly appreciate it.

Need to extend the clamp bolt out too the left rear corner of the table. Support it in the same manner. Keep up the great work brother! Thanks
@acutabove_woodworkings
@acutabove_woodworkings 5 лет назад
That was my initial plan Frank and it still might happen. I ended up having to cancel the extension, due to space restrictions on the left side of the drill press between the drill press table and the yellow tool chest. I was actually looking at it again today and wondering if it could still be done and I think I might have a plan as to how to do it. Thanks for tuning in and for chiming in with your suggestion. I appreciate the support.

Just a quick thought. You could install a longer bolt through the threads and then fasten on to the right end of the bolt. That would let you extend out to the right rear corner. Only it would reverse the action, it would be righty loosy lefty tighty lol

@@frankherring6253 That would definitely be an option Frank. I'm starting to wonder if the same bevel gears that were used on the raising mechanism can be used to move the tightening bolt from the back to the front. I'm still thinking on it though. Thanks for the suggestion.
