In this video I fix the problems I had with the gate. After consulting the client we agreed to shorten the pivoting post. This was both more aesthetically pleasing and fixed the problem of the slope in the gate by levelling it out and allowing the forked post to carry out their function unaltered. Now for the remaining problem of the weight imbalance we agreed on adding a nice natural stone to the ballast. I also prepared the planks and test fitted them on the gate.
Thank you for watching,
Marcel

To save a lot of aggravation, just cut a short length of 3/4" pipe the length you need it, and drive the nail/screw through the board, down the middle of that stand-off pipe section, and in to the style. This is how we do rain gutters here in the States and it works perfectly. Lasts nearly forever, too. As for the counterweight, I remember seeing a very old design where they made a "basket" from iron straps all nicely riveted together, and filled it with small rocks. That was then fastened to the end of the cantilever with an eye hook, if memory serves. It was antique when I saw it, so I'm sure it was original to the build. The benefit of it was that you weren't limited to just one big boulder and trying to find a way to secure it in place. With the smaller rocks, you could add and subtract whatever you needed until the weight was just right for an easy opening, and there was no worry about ice forming in the winter because rain and snow could drain through quite easily. Making the "bucket" from thin strapping wouldn't take much work, I don't think, since you really only need a few of them and they can be welded to each other. As long as the gaps are small enough that fist-sized rocks won't fall through, you're golden. Plus, it's match the rustic design of the gate and show a bit of ingenuity that'll have passersby smiling. 😁

Thanks. The basket is also a pretty nice idea. What is your first comments referring to actually? I'm nog sure..

@@MarcelTeugels That gap you have between the style and the plank rail. Instead of trying to fit a piece of wood between the style and rail, a lot of work that'll also trap moisture and induce rotting, you can simply measure the width of the gap where you want to put a fastener through... and then cut a piece of small pipe to that length. Then you just drive your screw or nail through the plank, down through the center of the pipe section (called a Stand-Off), and into the style. It holds firm every time. I found a video of a guy installing a gutter which shows the principle of what I'm trying to get across. We use them over here all the time, so it's kind of second-nature. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Vx1JeMiQgs4.html Notice the thin piece of tubing that's as long as the gutter is wide? That prevents the nail/screw from collapsing the gutter when you drive it home. In your case, it would prevent the rail from being drawn too closely in to the style. It's a very rigid set up and you wouldn't have any problem standing on the rail once you're done.
