Making a fishing lure from a broom handle (the Surreal eel)

I am by no means the first and will not be the last person to cut down a broom pole and head to some water. But sometimes the simplest lures are the best or just ok.
Once Again sorry for the spelling

Grandpa Stubelt Rip had 2 finishing lures. As a farmer in SW Michigan he only fished evenings. He fished while wading and used a rowboat to get to areas to wade. He used a home made popper from broom handle which he painted black with a recessed cup up front that he painted red. Gramps documented for years on average he caught a minimum of a hundred bass. His other lure was a black rubber worm. He said he liked to Wade because he fish the area more thoroughly and slowly. Rip Grandpa Stubelt

My Grandfather still makes broom handle lures to replicate old wooden Heddon Lucky 13's. They are still made today but they are plastic and the action just isn't the same. I'd love to see you make one, and they're deadly on Pike. Keep up the great work.

Great video and instruction once again! If you take a piece of the broom pole and put a shallow trough on the nose, it makes a great top water popper. I make a smaller one from 1/2 inch dowel rod and paint it in a frog pattern. The bass love it!

Paul, When fishing the Sea Of Cortez in Baja Mexico. The go to lure is the CEDAR PLUG, the simplest of lures, but very effective, would love to see you build one !
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman 8 лет назад
I have some, cedar, lead and a bit of brass, that might be a project, do you fish using them often?
@rrmerlin3402
@rrmerlin3402 8 лет назад
Yes, I've used them for 20+ years. And I'm headed down to the East Cape in Sept and will use them then. When on the Hotel fishing cruisers you have a wide range of lures to use, and by trial and error by far my favorite is the cedar plug. We catch many different species and no other lure is so simple. After watching you engineer lures to swim properly I'm sure they are more complicated in their build then they seem. Thanks for your channel, because of this ,I'll build lures someday.

Very good. I like the vids with more hand tools. Not easy carving the end-grain on that broom handle but you did a nice job of keeping it symmetrical. Wouldn't take much to turn that into a popper. I grew up about 10 miles from the Heddon factory. Have a nice day.

Awesome video matey, I don't think many people like IKEA but we still end up shopping there especially when the wife is involved 🙄 I've decided to try and make one from a cheap rolling pin I brought whilst in a bargain style shop the other day for £1 😂 we'll have to see how that turns out. As always yours look awesome, it's crazy how the detail in the tail makes such a difference in the action!

yes, too much of my life has been wasted there, they should just go the whole hog and make it Woman only. I also have some lovely beech rolling pins that I am saving for the lathe. The tail was a revelation, i actually cut the second one out on the bank. thanks

Paul where did you ever come up with the tail design? The tail really makes the lure come alive. Does the tail need replaced often if you catch many toothy pike?
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman 7 лет назад
the tails were just experiments i think i just drew to circles one inside the other and that was it for the first one, but the idea of a whip is very old idea i have seen this type of thing from fishing tackle books in the 1950's. It was intresting to see how the small change in design effectted the lure. I gave this lure away friend but the silicone is a lot tougher than the pvc normally used in soft plastic lures

suggestion: design a lure (your choice of style) that has tiny spinner blades (6-8?) around the neck of the lure. large spinners have been around forever and work, you could even work with some of the newer materials. it would add weight/flash/noise. mentioned this to Jord as well to ask you. he had your back, and told me how busy you've been, so I let it go, but now, since you referenced? cheers!, Chris

@61diemai 8 лет назад
Basic luremaking , ...very nice, Paul , ...exactly the way how I started out making lures from round wood dowels more than 20 years ago , ...well , .....except for most of the marker lines and I was utilizing a Stanley knife instead . This is really the way to go for the enthusiastic novice to take a first smell into the trade without having to invest a small fortune in tool gear . Paul , I'm really intrigued by the unusual wobbling action of your lure displayed as from 10:09 on , ......what do you think is exactly the cause , that makes the lurebody wobble this way , .......I find this swimming action most interesting and well worthwile trying to duplicate it , as it might be hard to achieve with the standard approach . I mean , a lipped lure would surely wobble this way , but sucha big tail attached would significantly dampen the wobble , as it works like some kind of a "braking parachute" to a lipped wobbling lure . You achieved this special swimming action by simply a different tail shape , obviously , ....I find this most astonishing and it seems to render some of my understandings about lure dynamics obsolete , ...hence my great interest ! Greetings , Dieter
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman 8 лет назад
i am not entirely sure why it was so violent, but the tail was basically a "c" shape, i would guess most whip tails would behave like this and that is why they mostly have a taper and some kind of wider fin part
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman
@PaulAdamsTheHandmadeFisherman 8 лет назад
i think i have found an original lure from Charlie Bettells book, one he made him self that is nude to illustrate the process
@61diemai
@61diemai 8 лет назад
Thanks a lot for info , Paul , ..looks like it might be subject to some trial and error to achieve such wobbling action on a tailbait , ...guess , that I'm gonna open an discussion on the German lure making forum forum.mt-lures.de/ as there are some guys around being far more experienced about tailbaits than I am . Cheers , Dieter
