I make a garden tote from reclaimed shelving, to replace our plastic tote that's falling apart.

Was looking for this! Granddaughter is an explorer ( in her mind) I will rename this as an explorers box for her.

Great job! Love the nails; that was a good touch. Just got through with a Christmas project using those same nails.

Thanks. Yeah, I enjoy finding places to use these nails, and they are surprisingly strong.

What do you listen to on your earphones while working? Fantastic work by the way, love your videos...you have such a peaceful, yet confident approach to every step of all your projects. A true craftsman.

Again a nice project with simple yet beautiful decorative elements :-) I like the nails, too. Did you ever try using brass wire / rod (around 2 millimeters) instead of those airnailer nails to fasten stuff together? That looks nice, too.
@MartyBacke
@MartyBacke 7 лет назад
I've never tried brass wire. I'm not sure what that process would be?
@heriberthuber54
@heriberthuber54 7 лет назад
You make a hole, gently tap in the wire and then sand it flush. In soft woods I make the hole a tenth of a millimeter smaller than the wire for a tighter fit. Most of the time I don't even use glue, just the friction is enough to hold everything together. It's more timeconsuming than nails, but looks a lot better :-)

Sounds interesting. I'll give a try. I always like experimenting with different textures and such. Thanks for the tip.

I got a lot inspiration from your videos and I am glad I could give back at least one idea :-)

Where's the fun if you don't over engineer it Marty? HaHa. Nice little project.

Thanks Guy. I still managed to go a little overboard. I really have a hard time just throwing something together :-(

What kind of rasp did you use to clear out the handle hole?

What do you think of that shinto rasp? I have one, but never get good results with it. Maybe its just me

I like it, but you have to have a soft touch. Of course it's not the final tool to touch the wood.

I often take projects outside to sand or finish. I thought about making one of these so I can bring all my pieces, sanding blocks, Dremel and everything I need in one trip. Do you think the handle could be modified to be opened up so larger pieces can fit? Instead of two separated compartments, you end up with one large one. What do you think?
@MartyBacke
@MartyBacke 6 лет назад
Certainly. A tote this size is never going to hold enough weight that the handle will be stressed. Your suggestion is good and I may consider that when I make my next tote - they really are easy to make.

Pieces for a 6 x 8 inch box. 3 or 4 sanding blocks, a tack rag. That would fit nicely in the size you made. Possibly a bit taller. Making it will be practice for me and it will work for some of my 'taking outside' projects. Thanks Marty!

Love your work but I'm SHOCKED you didn't add some form of protection.
@MartyBacke
@MartyBacke 7 лет назад
Thanks. I decided to treat this like unfinished lawn furniture, where it's allowed to age with the Sun and elements. It's an experiment. If it doesn't hold up to the small garden tools I'll make another one and protect it with a finish.

Right on my Brethren. I kinda figured that was the case. But as a loyal, devoted, (insert brown nose comment ) fan of your channel, and mind you, I show your video's to my son and his friends as to how you really want to be as a wood worker, ( insert serious devoted fan comment), I still am shocked. LOL Longest run on sentence ever? Seriously, I love your channel and FORCE it on friends and kids and anyone I know that wants to get serious with wood working. Really looking forward to more from you and I hope you're having a great day my Friend. Take care!

Funny, most people that amount to little or nothing, are the very people that go around throwing low brow insults. Judging from your name, "illuminaughty"? I'm guessing you're either 14 yrs old and trolling 24/7 on the net or you're 46 yrs old living in your mom's basement. Cmon, man. This channel isn't the channel for this, please go away.

That guy is banned from my channel so his comments will never appear again. I hate to see pure negative content so I do censor my channel.

This has to be one of my favorite comments, if not a little over the top ;-) I really appreciate your sentiments regards my efforts in the workshop. It's just a fun pastime for me and I enjoying sharing some of my work when I can afford the time to film it (which just about triples the time it takes to make anything). Thanks James :-)
