Making a hatchet handle

This hatchet handle is made from ash and is finished with danish oil instead of boiled linseed oil because I didn't want it to turn yellow. Off camera I sharpened and slightly cleaned up the hatchet head from dirt and rust.
I originally made the handle to long for the head and it felt and looked awkward. That's why you see me chopping of a section and doing the work again.

I would watch my grandfather make handles for tools and make baskets by hand from wood off his land

Very cool! I have an old ax head I need to restore and make a handle for. This motivates me to do it.

It's incredibly satisfying to make one and take that first chop. I'd love to see what you come up with

It's good to see the woodprix has new instructions to save my money and energy to build it.

How do you know the balance point of the handle to head before you start carving for the hatchet? I like what this looks like but I'm afraid to ridiculed for not doing it correct, Thank you

I honestly don't think about those things. I made something that I wanted to make and I was lucky that it worked out. This isn't a high use tool for me so I wasn't to critical about it

@@JTWoodworks After I replied to you, I figured the same thing. I had some Walnut pieces that I used and just finished that handle. Looks good and may be good for trimming small. I just know how well Walnut will hold up though. Thanks for your video as it gave me inspiration to go ahead.
