You should definitely try this out if you have some spare pieces of heavy & hard wood. The sound of the bullroarer is pretty unique and can produce a very powerful sound.

Step one to making a bullroarer, get a bullroarer to trace out onto a board.

Can these be made shorter? I want one that fits in my pocket. I don't need it to be very loud.

I make them. About 9.5 inches by 1.75 inches. .25 inches thick. Sounds good.

It's one of humanity's oldest instruments for sound, music, communication, etc. Earliest bullroarers dating from 20,000 years ago were found in Eastern Europe. They have been in use all across the globe since paleolithic times on all settled continents, their sound being used for a great variety of purposes ranging from ritual to hunting or play. There's a 'bullroarer' Wikipedia article.
