I designed and built a Mid Century Modern Baby Crib for our first baby boy. I wanted to build a high end crib that had an heirloom piece feel to it, but I still wanted to keep it modern, happy, and inspired creativity. Colors haven't been my strong suit, so I was glad Chris Salomone of Foureyes built something with exactly the colors I was looking for. It's a pretty big build, with lots of individual pieces. I was able to keep the mistakes minimal and none of my design mistakes hurt my design intent. The crib is very strong and sturdy, so I'm very happy with the results.
Disclaimer: I followed all rules set out by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission on baby cribs, so if you plan to build your own, make sure you follow those as well.

@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations 5 лет назад
Vinny Meade the whole thing took a long time because I’d start, then go back and redesign, then do something, redesign, etc... and I had to do some research on the US consumer safety guidelines to make sure what I’m building is following all of the safety laws. On top of that, I kept going back and forth regarding how I’m going to connect the crib and the cabinet. I’d say the whole thing took me roughly 6 weeks. I think if I’m building the same thing again, I can do it within 4 weeks, maybe 3 weeks. Finishing takes a long time too...

Excellent work, Sir! Beautiful and sturdy. I just found out two days ago I'm going to be a grandfather. My granddaughter is in the baby oven 12 weeks now. So excited. I definitely want to make a family heirloom "GrandPa-made" crib for her. Thanks for the inspiration. That domino tool seems as if it is a very handy piece of equipment. I've been cutting mortises and tenons by table saw, drill, and chisel, but with al the slats needed, it might be an excuse for a brand new tool. Was it difficult to master that tool? Thanks for posting and sharing. I'm jumping onto SketchUp right now. Wish me luck.

Beautiful build. Just a few questions since it’s been a while since you built it. 1-is putting crib over vent a problem? 2-I’ve wondered about tapping directly into wood versus an insert w threads. Are u happy w your choice? 3-wheels come to mind for access and cleaning Behind crib. What made u choose a base versus wheels? 4-when are u doing a shop tour?
@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations 4 года назад
Thanks! I’ll try to answer these questions the best I can. 1) the feet would complete sit on top of the vent, so it’s probably not good for the vent. Plus, there wouldn’t be any circulation. 2) I’ve taken apart and put this crib back together 5 times now and have not had any issues with the tapped threads. Though for a peace of mind, I recommend putting in some epoxy when putting in the bolts just for some robustness. I use threaded inserts most of the time though, and I’m sure they’ll be more robust for a piece that has to be taken apart often. 3) I try to avoid using casters or wheels on my furniture for a couple of reasons. One is aesthetics. The other reason is because it raises the height of the piece, so normally I’d have to reduce the amount of storage space to keep the overall size of the piece the same. It takes some effort to pull the crib out but not impossible. 4) probably never. My shop is always a mess lol

Hayden Barnes thanks! To answer your questions, yes I used Purebond ply. I used 2 sheets of 3/4” and less one sheet of 1/2”. It can be done with less if you don’t put a full sheet on the bottom like I did. I estimated the cost to be around $500 in materials not including hardware, maybe a bit more.

Where do you find your walnut plywood? I’m having trouble sourcing anything bigger than a 2’ x 2’ “craft piece”. Or I can find laminate online to make my own. I’ll be starting my own crib and dresser build soon and love the idea of the plywood panels rather than gluing up hardwood and having to surface it all.
@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations 5 лет назад
Nathan Mash hey, first of all, thanks for checking out the video! Really appreciate it. To answer your question, I get mine from a couple of places. One being Woodcraft and the other is a local place called Woodworx. One sheet of 3/4” at Woodworx is around $150-$160, but is $130ish at Woodcraft. But Woodworx sell Purebond ply that has much more pleasing grain patterns than the stuff at Woodcraft. So I suggest shopping around...not all ply are the same quality. There are also stores that ship full sheets of ply, but due to their size and weight, I think they’re freight shipments, so it gets really expensive. If you have a Rockler or Woodcraft store around you, I suggest checking them out first

@@BevelishCreations Thanks for the quick response! One last question, I cannot find the mattress height settings anywhere. The 3 holes you drilled to be able to adjust the mattress height. How far apart are those and how far off the bottom of the crib are they? Thanks so much, you're stuff is great!
@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations 3 года назад
Hey you’ll only need two heights. You can Google any cribs online and they’ll mention the two heights in the crib specs. I’ve found there isn’t a “regulation” height, so they all seemed a little different. I’m guessing because mattresses are all different thicknesses, some are 6” thick and some are 2” thick. What I’d recommend is go to your local Target, west elm, etc and take some measurements. Then reach in and pretend you’re picking up a kid and see how comfortable it is

Hi, I don't have any hard numbers currently. The way I built this was first finding the mattress I wanted (they all vary in size). Then I figured out the dimensions from there. My dimensions won't work for all mattresses out there since the mattress I picked was on the small side, so the larger ones won't fit

At what height did you make the different mattress position heights at
@BevelishCreations
@BevelishCreations 4 года назад
The lowest level has the bottom of the mattress about 10” from the floor. The highest has the bottom of the mattress about 17” from the floor. You can go to stores and measure some cribs. They’re all roughly the same

Very nice 👍do you have it plan to publish plans for this I'd love to try it out as a gift for my nephew

Paul thanks! I don’t have any plans for it right now. I always use Sketchup as the first step to start getting the overall dimensions correctly and start building it in my head. But I always change things as I move along. So the Sketchup I have doesn’t really match my final products. I’d do you a disservice if I sent that to you. It’d take me many hours to match the Sketchup to my final product and write out plans for it. Maybe in the future, if there’s enough demand for it, I can write out something and fix the Sketchup. I apologize

@@BevelishCreations ok thanks👍 so now where do I post the petition for people to register there interest 😂😂

Paul I’ve got a mental tally about interest in plans haha. I think maybe with my build after the next one I’ll start doing a write up or something kind of like Johnny Brook or Brad Rodriguez. I might charge a small fee for them, like $5 since it does take quite awhile to do. Is that something you’d be interested in?
