In this video I give a step-by-step tutorial on how to make an underwater scene using polymer clay, plaster of Paris, air-drying clay and acrylic paint. In this video you will learn how to work with these four crafting materials and get the skills and confidence to try many similar projects.
This crafting tutorial shows the process I followed and gives tips along the way as I learned how to do it. Links are provided to some of the materials and tools I used. I also gave some background of me and how I started my channel.
I always wanted to create an underwater reef using polymer clay but I wanted to take it one step further. I wanted to create underwater scene with rocks, sand, reef plants and animals and then cover the entire thing using resin. However, my initial resin tests did not go so well so I decided to leave that bit out for now. I had many new things to learn since this was the first time I used air-drying clay, plaster of Paris and polymer clay.
I started with the rocks that I made from plaster of Paris. The rock molds were made from tin foil and I used old ice-cube and muffin trays for support. To add more variations, I combined some of the smaller and larger rocks which I glued together using wood PVA glue. After the rocks dried out, I used a utility knife to cut extra grooves to add more character. Any excess dust was brushed off using a large clean paint brush which had the additional benefit of rounding the sharp corners making the rocks look like they were shaped by water. To paint the rocks, I used Acrylic paint that I mixed in three coats. A dark grey base coat, a black wash for the shadows and a light grey component for highlighting edges using a dry-brush technique.
The base consists of a small wooden plank off-cut that I coated with a thin layer of DAS modelling clay. This is a water based, air-drying clay, that was easy to manipulate and attach the rocks to. It was also easy to add sand ripples between the rocks. After the rocks were added and the sand ripples were in place, I let the piece dry over a day or two. I then used acrylic paint to finish the rocks touched up some of the rocks and The next step was to coat the clay with wood (PVA) glue and cover this with sand which I filtered through an old stocking to remove larger particles. It took two coats of sand to get to the point where you could not see the clay anymore.
The reef parts, plants and other animals were made from polymer clay. I scanned the web for ideas of different ocean animals, reefs and plants that I can make from clay to decorate my scene, then one-by-one I crafted the little pieces from polymer clay. After oven-hardening the clay I painted them with acrylic paint for final touches and then arranged the pieces on the base. Once I was happy with the placements, I glued the pieces on with hot glue.
The last step of the process was to remove any excess glue or cover it with sand. Because I decided not to proceed with the resin for now, I finished the base off as well with a layer of wood glue and sand.
